    This research investigates a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) composed of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG), a back-to-back converter, a wind turbine, and a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The MPPT is based on the Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) method that, for each wind speed, operates by adjusting the generator rotational speed. Therefore, wind turbine delivers the maximum available power at that speed. The system was implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink software, and the results was consistent: for an optimal wind speed of 12 m/s, the PMSG rotor achieves nominal speed and the developed power by the turbine is close to the nominal power of the PMSG. The techniques and methods employed can contribute to works in intention of efficiency and overall performance of wind energy systems.

    The main contribution of this paper is to present a methodology proposal for the development of active and reactive power control of a wind power generation system connected to the grid using the three-phase induction generator with a squirrel cage rotor (SCIG). The SCIG stator terminals are connected to electric grid before the inductive filter using an AC/DC/AC power converter topology, called back-to-back, while the rotor terminals are short circuited, so that the SCIG's active and reactive power control techniques are presented. The control of grid side converter (GSC) is presented, responsible for the power control and also for keeping the DC bus voltage constant. The control of induction generator side converter (IGSC) is presented also, in which vector control is used in rotor variables, so that the SCIG is controlled through the torque references and magnetizing current. The studied system was mathematically modeled and simulated using Matlab/Simulink software.

    This paper describes a wind power system working with control of active and reactive power as well as harmonic current compensation. Power control is made through stator flux oriented in machine-side converter. The active filtering is done by grid-side converter (GSC) causing to grid current waveform without distortions. The algorithm applied for harmonic mitigation has shown to be effective in improving of power quality. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed research, since through the power control of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and harmonic compensation on GSC was possible to deliver of power to electric grid, satisfactorily.
  • Control of powers for wind power generation and grid current harmonics filtering from doubly fed induction generator: Comparison of two strategies

    Two strategies for wind power systems that simultaneously adjust the powers generation from doubly fed induction generator and achieves grid currents harmonic filtering are presented in this paper. The harmonic mitigation function is developed by algorithms proposed for compensating harmonics from the grid side converter. The quality of power is substantially enhanced. The generator side converter regulates the active and reactive powers that are supplied to the electric grid by the stator flux oriented control. This paper presents a novel control system for power generation and electric grid harmonic compensation, which is described and validated through comparison with other strategies. A harmonic filtering behavior analysis for some operation points using the novel strategy is presented. The proposed system efficiency is verified through simulation and experimental results. The grid current THD when none of the proposed strategies are applied is 17.21%. The THD is reduced to 5.68% when strategy 1 is applied. When strategy 2 is used the THD is decreased to 3.18%.
  • Methodology for the electromagnetic design of the axial-flux c-core switched reluctance generator

    The main contribution of this paper is to present a methodology proposal for the electromagnetic design of the axial-flux switched reluctance generator with C core (C-SRG). The proposed methodology focuses on different aspects. First, initial C-core dimensions are obtained from analytic equations and design considerations from the traditional switched reluctance machines. Then, a 2-D finite-element method (FEM) model is used to determine the final constructive parameters of the C-SRG coupled with an iterative optimization process. From the proposed design methodology, a C-core prototype of the generator was built, and the static results were obtained. The C-SRG operational analysis compares the experimental results to the simulations results, which uses a model based on FEM that well represents the nonlinearities of the system. The simulated and experimental results attested the viability and efficiency of the proposed methodology to design the C-SRG for wind power generation.
  • Design, optimization and analysis of the axial C-core Switched Reluctance Generator for wind power application

    Switched reluctance generator (SRG) has been covered in several researches in the last two decades. These kind of machine is very promising for wind power application due to their low cost, high efficiency and high power density per volume. On the other hand, lots of researches are dedicated to the study and project of traditional SRG (radial flux). This article presents the electromagnetic design and optimization of the Axial Switched Reluctance Generator with C Core (C-SRG) using finite element method. Moreover, in order to better analyze the dynamic behavior of the C-SRG, a co-simulation was developed using the software Maxwell 3D and Simplorer. The simulation results indicate that the methodology adopted was suitable and can be applied to C-SRG electromagnetic design.
