Evaluation of Laboratory-Scale Composting Reactors to Simulate Compost Barn Bedding Dynamics Gabriela Maria Fernandes Fiães, Marcelo Henrique Otenio, Luana de Araújo Coimbra, Caio de Teves Inácio, Leonardo de Souza Ramos Environmental Quality Management, 2026 Efficient management of compost bedding is essential for sustainability and animal welfare in Compost Barns (CBs). This study evaluated laboratory‐scale bioreactors as tools to simulate CB composting dynamics, focusing on temperature control, aeration, and wood shaving supplementation. Three sequential experiments were conducted. Test 1 used a 50:50 mix of shavings and compost bedding for three months. Test 2 operated 1‐week cycles with 100% compost bedding without temperature control. Test 3, also lasting 1 week, applied active temperature regulation at 39°C with 100% bedding. Aeration was set at 15 mL/min in Tests 2 and 3. All experiments included initial and final measurements of pH, total solids (TS), and microbiological indicators. Results indicated that temperature control in Test 3 improved organic matter degradation and suggested enhanced pathogen reduction. These findings demonstrate that laboratory‐scale bioreactors are effective for simulating CB composting and underscore the importance of temperature and aeration management. Future studies should further optimize temperature control and reactor design to enhance microbial activity and compost stabilization. To our knowledge, this is the first study to validate 3‑L laboratory‐scale bioreactors specifically for simulating CB bedding dynamics.
ENERGY RECOVERY FROM THE ANAEROBIC CO-DIGESTION OF RICOTTA CHEESE WHEY AND DAIRY CATTLE MANURE Larice Aparecida Santana, Guilherme Henrique Da Silva, Jailton da Costa Carneiro, Isabela Gomes Da Motta, Henrique Vieira Mendonça, et al. Bioscience Journal, 2026 This study evaluated biogas production, methane concentration and yield, as well as the potential for energy production of anaerobic co-digestion of ricotta cheese whey and dairy cattle manure in 60 L plug flow reactors. Four reactors were operated: three with different proportions of ricotta cheese whey (20, 40, and 80%) and a control reactor containing only dairy cattle manure. The reactors were operated for 106 days, with a hydraulic retention time of 30 days. In all reactors, pH remained near neutrality, and alkalinity stayed above 2,500 mg L⁻¹. Notably, only the reactor with 80% ricotta cheese whey demonstrated more efficient removal of total solids, volatile solids, biochemical oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand, with average reductions of 54, 69, 69, and 78%, respectively. However, the reactor operated with 40% ricotta cheese whey produced the highest accumulated biogas volume, surpassing the 80% ricotta cheese whey reactor by 36 L, with a realistic extrapolation of electricity production estimated at 1.67 kWh m-³. Although methane yields were close to theoretical maximum values and methane concentrations showed no significant differences between treatments, the results confirm the effectiveness of anaerobic co-digestion in the treating of agro-industrial waste. The 40% ricotta cheese whey and 60% dairy cattle manure ratio stands as a promising alternative for biogas production.

Valorization and Bioremediation of Digestate from Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Giant Reed (Arundo donax L.) and Cattle Wastewater Using Microalgae Guilherme Henrique da Silva, Natália dos Santos Renato, Alisson Carraro Borges, Marcio Arêdes Martins, Alberto José Delgado dos Reis, et al. Sustainability Switzerland, 2024 Anaerobic digestion followed by microalgal cultivation is considered a promising renewable alternative for the production of biomethane with reduced effluent generation, thus lowering the environmental impact. In this arrangement, in addition to generating energy, the microalgae act by potentiating the refinement of the effluents generated via anaerobic digestion (digestates). In this study, the microalga Tetradesmus obliquus was cultivated in photobioreactors with the final digestate resulting from the co-digestion of Arundo donax L. plant biomass and cattle wastewater. The biotechnological route used was efficient, and the biogas production ranged from 50.20 to 94.69 mL gVS−1. The first-order kinetic model with variable dependence (FOMT) provided the best fit for the biogas production data. In the microalgal post-treatment, the removal values ranged from 81.5 to 93.8% for the chemical oxygen demand, 92.0 to 95.3% for NH4+-N, and 41.7 to 83.3% for PO43− after 26 days. The macromolecular composition of the algal biomass reached lipid contents ranging from 33.4 to 42.7%. Thus, the proposed process mediated by microalgae can be considered promising for the bioremediation and recovery of effluents produced by agriculture through the use of microalgal biomass for bioproduct production.
