Federated Learning on Non-IID Environmental Images for Enhanced Wildfire Surveillance Elisa Ribeiro Gonçalves, Emanuel Teixeira Martins, Rodrigo Moreira, Larissa Ferreira Rodrigues Moreira Revista De Informatica Teorica E Aplicada, 2026 Wildfires pose serious threats to ecosystems and human safety, requiring accurate monitoring systems. This study proposes a Federated Learning (FL) approach with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for wildfire detection using two heterogeneous image datasets, keeping the data locally on each client. The federated setup simulates non-Independent and identically distributed (IID) conditions, where each client trains locally and updates are aggregated its weights to a remote server. To ensure effective performance, hyperparameter optimization for each architecture was conducted using the Tree of Parzen Estimators (TPE), allowing efficient exploration of the best training configurations. Results demonstrate that FL can handle data heterogeneity while preserving privacy, with deeper CNN architectures achieving superior performance. The findings highlight the feasibility of FL for wildfire surveillance and the ability of optimized CNNs to generalize effectively across diverse environmental conditions, supporting collaborative model training without sharing raw data.
PSO-based Client Selection to Improve Medical Image Classification in Federated Learning Leonardo Gabriel Ferreira Rodrigues, Larissa Ferreira Rodrigues Moreira, Rodrigo Moreira, André Ricardo Backes Revista De Informatica Teorica E Aplicada, 2026 Federated Learning (FL) offers an effective approach to enable collaborative model training across decentralized medical institutions while preserving patient privacy. However, FL faces challenges related to data heterogeneity and inefficient client participation issues. In this study, we introduce a novel client selection strategy based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to improve medical image classification in federated settings. Our method dynamically selects informative clients by evaluating their contributions to the global model, which reduces communication overhead and supports faster convergence. We performed experiments using three publicly available medical imaging datasets, Biglycan, ALL-IDB, and LC25000, focusing on binary classification tasks. The results show that the PSO-based approach improves performance over random client selection across all evaluated scenarios, with gains in accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-Score, even when selecting fewer clients. These findings indicate that incorporating PSO into FL frameworks helps address challenges related to data heterogeneity and communication efficiency while maintaining classification performance and privacy preservation.
Federated Semantic Segmentation of Synthetic UAV Imagery under Non-IID Conditions Segmentação Semântica Federada de Imagens Sintéticas de VANT sob Condições Não-IID Victor Gonçalves Vieira, Emanuel Teixeira Martins, Juliana Quintiliano Ferreira, Thiago Luange Gomes, Michel Melo Silva, et al. Revista De Informatica Teorica E Aplicada, 2026 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) rely on semantic segmentation for monitoring, inspection, and disaster response tasks. Traditional centralized training requires the transfer of large data volumes, which is often infeasible because of privacy, bandwidth, and decentralization constraints. Federated Learning (FL) offers a promising alternative; however, non-IID data hinder its effectiveness because UAVs operate in diverse environments with heterogeneous distributions. This study evaluated the adaptation of a semantic segmentation model to a federated setting using synthetic UAV imagery. We investigated four training configurations by varying the communication rounds, local epochs, and learning rates, and analyzed their effects on convergence and class-level accuracy. The results suggest that moderate communication with local training achieves balanced performance, whereas high learning rates or excessive synchronization cause instability and class-specific biases. These findings open avenues for designing robust federated UAV segmentation strategies under non-IID conditions.
