  • A New Perspective of E-Trust in the Era of Social Media: Insights From Customer Satisfaction Data
Usha Ramanathan, Nigel L. Williams, Michael Zhang, Punyachalee Sa-nguanjin, Jose Arturo Garza-Reyes, Lilian Adriana Borges
IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 2022
In this era of social media, products and services are sold globally using a few simple clicks online. In such online purchases, trust and familiarity are considered two important driving forces of consumer decision making. While online sales advocate high levels of flexibility and choices for consumers, they also hold the online service provider responsible for ensuring the security of the online user's data. Using a structural equation model with data collected from the online service industry, we test the direct effects of “social-media-induced purchase intention” on customer satisfaction. We also test the mediating role of e-commerce/online sales (e-advertisement, e-safety, and e-information) on customer satisfaction. In addition to social media advertising and information sharing, we find that a new factor—“e-safety”—mediates the relationship between customer purchase intention and customer satisfaction. Our analysis indicates that online e-trust can be established between the customer and the service company when online purchases are made. At the same time, the quality of online information and e-safety of online payments make the service company trustworthy for future purchases. We relate data analysis directly to managerial decision making to avoid any delay in online customer services in the era of social media.

  • Incorporating human factors into the AAMT selection: a framework and process

International Journal of Production Research, 2017
Human factors such as employee morale and workers skills greatly influence the successful adoption of automated and advanced manufacturing technologies. For newly industrialised countries, the evaluation of these factors before technology selection is particularly paramount. Countries such as Brazil are in the critical early stages of technology adoption and low rates of secondary education and scarcity of technicians reinforce the importance of assessing human factors before the actual technology implementation. Although methods have been proposed to evaluate intangible aspects, the lack of a structured approach to identify and quantify human factors still constitutes a major hurdle. The paper describes a framework and process to assist managers in identifying and evaluating human factors in the selection. The approach was tested in eight companies in Brazil. The results indicated that the main advantages of the proposed approach are: (a) provide a comprehensive justification of technology adoption by identifying and quantifying intangible aspects; and (b) supply a practical process to be incorporated into the selection decision-making process.

PurposeThis paper aims to propose a new framework to define relevant and meaningful indicators for monitoring and assessing environmental performance to improve health-care systems and operations.Design/methodology/approachA comprehensive literature review followed by field studies conducted with ten hospitals in the southern region of Brazil underlined the scarcity of consistent frameworks applied in practice to measure, monitor and improve environmental performance. A new framework was developed and proposed to address this issue. The proposed framework is operationalized through a “process approach” and evaluated in terms of feasibility (Can the process be followed?), usability (Is the approach easily followed?) and utility (Are the results useful for managers?).FindingsThe paper proposes a framework and a process to evaluate the environmental performance in hospitals.Practical implicationsThe proposed framework represents meaningful guidance to managers for strategy formalization, goal setting and environmental performance assessment and monitoring.Originality/valueThe paper proposes a systematic framework for measuring environmental performance in hospitals drawn from the literature review, current legislation and best practices reported in literature.
