Conventional imaging techniques, such as optical coherence tomography, often fail to distinguish glaucomatous neurodegeneration from tumour-induced damage, while standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy may exacerbate glaucoma progression. These diagnostic and therapeutic challenges highlight the urgent need for integrated management strategies. Recent advances in nanotechnology offer innovative solutions, with nanotherapeutics enabling targeted drug delivery, enhanced imaging contrast, and combined diagnostic–therapeutic (“theranostic”) capabilities. Various nanoparticle platforms have shown promise in improving ocular drug bioavailability, precision targeting, and real-time disease monitoring. This review synthesizes current progress in nanomedicine for glaucoma-associated cancers, emphasizing multifunctional nanoparticles that concurrently support tumour suppression and neuroprotection. Despite encouraging preclinical findings, significant challenges remain, including limited penetration across ocular barriers, uncertain long-term biocompatibility, and complex regulatory requirements. Continued interdisciplinary research integrating nanotechnology with gene editing and vector-based delivery systems may pave the way for personalized, vision-preserving therapies that redefine the treatment paradigm for glaucoma-associated ocular malignancies.

While vaccination is the cornerstone of HBV prevention, hemodialysis patients often exhibit inadequate immune responses to the vaccine, jeopardizing their protection. This narrative review comprehensively evaluates the prevalence of non-response to HBV vaccination among hemodialysis patients and identifies associated factors. Drawing on data from various sources, the review analyzes demographics, clinical characteristics, and vaccination protocols to shed light on the critical determinants of vaccine failure. The analysis reveals significant variability in vaccine response rates among hemodialysis patients, with factors such as age, comorbidities, dialysis duration, and nutritional status playing pivotal roles. Additionally, vaccine type, dosage, and administration schedule influence immunogenicity. The findings provide critical insights into optimizing HBV vaccination strategies for hemodialysis non-responders by identifying underlying risk factors, thereby contributing to enhanced public health outcomes.
Role of dendritic cells and B cells in the skin of imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like mouse model Aina Akmal Mohd Noor, Lidawani Lambuk, Farizan Ahmad, Maryam Azlan, Norhanani Mohd Redzwan Peerj, 2026 Background Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease traditionally characterized by T cell-mediated immune responses. However, dendritic cells (DCs) and B cells also contribute to immune regulation in psoriasis. Their role in disease progression remains underexplored. Methods This study utilized an imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like mouse model to investigate DC and B cell dynamics at different stages of disease progression (day 3, day 5 and day 7). Skin lesions were evaluated using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and histological analysis. Flow cytometry was performed to assess the expression of CD11c + MHCII + DCs and CD19 + CD38 + B cells, while gene expression analysis using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of CD11c, H2-Aa, B cell activating factor (BAFF), interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6 and CXCR5 was conducted to elucidate immune modulation within the psoriasis skin microenvironment. Results IMQ application induced progressive skin thickening, erythema and scaling, with PASI scores significantly increased at day 7 compared to controls ( p = 0.002), reflecting pronounced inflammation. Histological analysis revealed epidermal hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and dermal immune cell infiltration. Skin CD11c + MHCII + DCs were significantly elevated at day 3 ( p < 0.01), corresponding with upregulation of CD11c and H2-Aa genes, while CD19 + CD38 + B cells expanded at later stages, peaking at day 7 ( p < 0.0001), associated with increased BAFF , IL-10 , IL-6 and CXCR5 expression. A reduction in circulating B cells was observed alongside increased skin infiltration, suggesting a possible redistribution associated with inflammation. Conclusion Early DC activation corresponded with the initiation phase of inflammation, while the later expansion of B cells appeared to coincide with sustained inflammatory activity and disease progression. The coordinated presence of DCs and B cells in the skin microenvironment may influence disease severity and pathogenesis, which could provide fundamental insights for future investigations into potential therapeutic strategies.

Beyond its established role in cardiovascular pathology, emerging evidence implicates altered lipoprotein balance, impaired cholesterol transport, and lipid-driven inflammation in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, cataracts, and glaucoma. This review integrates current knowledge on cholesterol synthesis, transport, and regulation with ocular-specific mechanisms, emphasizing the differential roles of low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. Key molecular pathways, including the mevalonate-SREBP axis, ABCA1/ABCG1-mediated reverse cholesterol transport, VEGF-driven angiogenesis, oxidative stress signaling, and inflammatory cascades, are critically discussed. Clinical and translational implications are highlighted, particularly the potential ocular benefits of lipid-modulating therapies such as statins, fenofibrate, and antioxidant supplementation. Understanding cholesterol as a modifiable determinant of ocular health may enable integrated preventive strategies and guide future therapeutic innovation in vision-threatening diseases.

(date palm) is a widely cultivated fruit tree valued for its nutritional richness and diverse bioactive profile. This review aimed to critically synthesize current evidence of physicochemical characteristics, nutrient composition, and pharmacological potential of date palm fruits, seeds, and leaves. Relevant literature was retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, with emphasis on extraction methodologies, nutritional attributes, phytochemical constituents, therapeutics properties, and translational relevance. Date palm products are rich in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential minerals, and phenolic and flavonoid compounds, such as gallic acid, catechin, quercetin, and ferulic acid, which underpin their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Experimental studies further suggest potential antimicrobial, antihyperlipidemic, antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-arthritic, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, and gastroprotective effects. Notably, date seeds, often discarded as agricultural by-products, also exhibit substantial polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity, supporting their potential value in nutraceutical applications. However, the majority of reported biological effects are derived from in vitro and in vivo models, with limited and heterogeneous clinical evidence. Although accumulating preclinical findings highlight the functional and therapeutic promise of P. dactylifera L. important gaps remain regarding extract standardization, bioavailability, dose-response relationships, safety profiling, and clinical efficacy. Addressing these challenges is essential to facilitate evidence-based development of sustainable date palm-derived functional foods, dietary supplements, and potential pharmaceutical applications. While its importance for overall health, including neurodegeneration, is acknowledged, the specific correlation between vitamin E deficiency and distinct ocular neurodegenerative disorders need to be further explored. This review delves into the molecular mechanisms of vitamin E in ocular neurodegenerative disorders; diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts, and emphasising the therapeutic implications drawn from existing evidence. Relationship between vitamin E and ocular neurodegenerative disorders is widely researched on, with its primary protective mechanisms attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, studies on the supplementation of vitamin E among human subjects present mixed results, suggesting its complexities and variability depending on factors such as the specific disorder, disease stage, genetic differences, and form of vitamin E utilized. In conclusion, while vitamin E holds promise in mitigating ocular neurodegeneration through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, its supplementation's efficacy remains nuanced and context dependent. More research works are essential to elucidate its precise role and therapeutic potential in combating various ocular neurodegenerative disorders.

Extensive research has implicated oxidative stress (OS)-induced retinal damage as a primary contributor to AMD pathogenesis, prompting investigations into potential therapeutic interventions. Among the various nutrients studied for their potential in AMD risk reduction, antioxidants have shown promise, with initial findings from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study suggesting a correlation between antioxidant supplementation and decreased AMD progression. This article explores the scientific foundation supporting the therapeutic efficacy of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) as a viable candidate for slowing AMD progression, based on interventional studies. AMD is characterized by OS, inflammation, dysregulated lipid metabolism, and angiogenesis, all of which TRF purportedly addresses through its potent anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, antiangiogenic, and antioxidant properties. The review underscores TRF's promising attributes, aiming to deepen understanding of AMD pathogenesis and advocate for TRF-based pharmacological interventions to enhance therapeutic outcomes. Given the pressing need for effective AMD treatments, TRF represents a promising avenue for intervention, offering hope for improved vision outcomes and enhanced quality of life for individuals affected by this debilitating condition.
Molecular Impact of Magnesium-Mediated Immune Regulation in Diseases Muhammad Zulfiqah Sadikan, Lidawani Lambuk, Haryati Ahmad Hairi, Rohimah Mohamud Scientifica, 2025 Magnesium (Mg) is a crucial mineral that is required for maintaining many of the physiological processes, including immune regulation. The immune system is a protective strategy against pathogenic infection, allergic reaction and tumour development. Dysregulation of immune functions results in different pathological conditions, including autoimmune disease, allergic diseases and infectious diseases. Mg plays a role in the modulation of immune responses through the regulation of the activation, proliferation and differentiation of immune cells. Moreover, research has shown that Mg participates in the treatment and prevention of different diseases, so it may serve as a therapeutic drug. Mg immunoregulatory activity and its applications in prevention and treatment of immune‐related disorders are discussed herein. Immunosuppression, reduced phagocytosis and suppressed natural killer cell function were associated with low concentrations of Mg, and these are critical for protection against viruses. Mg further affects inflammatory cytokine release and modulation of NF‐κB, a key immune signalling cascade. Evidence corroborates that supplementation with Mg might alleviate symptoms of immune diseases like SLE, bronchial asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and microbial infection. However, it is critical to conduct trials for establishing optimum dosing paradigms as well as the long‐term impact of Mg supplementation in the frame of immune disease.
