- Fast pH-Driven Solubilization Method of Realgar (As4S4) to Reduce the Toxicity of Arsenic [As(III)] for Medicinal Purposes

Advanced Science, 2025
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) accounts for 5–15% of acute myeloid leukemia cases. It is typically characterized by the (15;17) chromosomal translocation, producing the pathogenic retinoic acid receptor (RAR) alpha/promyelocytic leukemia (PML) fusion protein. Recently, remission of APL has been achieved using the first chemotherapy‐independent oral drug regimen in anticancer therapy, consisting of all‐trans retinoic acid (targeting RARalpha) and the arsenic sulfide realgar (targeting PML). However, clinical adoption of realgar and the characterization of its active breakdown products have been hampered by its poor solubility. Here, a scalable pH/temperature‐based process is described that partially mimics gut transition, achieving fast and reproducible solubilization of realgar. Six different spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques are employed to investigate solubilized realgar. Furthermore, it is shown that solubilized realgar targets PML, displaying wider in vitro therapeutic indices and lower off‐target effects than arsenic trioxide, the current APL standard of care. Moreover, in line with evidence of an interplay between PML and HIV persistence, solubilized realgar can disrupt HIV latency, the main barrier to an HIV/AIDS cure, in CD4 T cells of people living with HIV. These findings may open avenues for streamlining realgar solubilization and designing less toxic, orally administrable arsenic‐based therapies. - Unraveling the spectroscopic/electrochemical behavior of a tetraruthenated zinctetrapyridylporphyrazine complex

Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, 2025
A comparison of the chemistry of the tetraruthenated zinctetrapyridilporphyrin and zinctetrapyridylporphyrazine species has been performed, aiming to improve the understanding of the electronic coupling (or back-bonding) between the macrocyclic center and the peripheral [Ru(bipy)2Cl][Formula: see text] complexes. In the case of the supramolecular tetrapyridylporphyrins, the bridging pyridyl groups are located at the meso-carbon position so that their rotational properties decrease the electronic coupling between the peripheral complexes and the porphyrin center. However, in the tetrapyridylporphyrazine system, the interaction with [Formula: see text]-backbonding Ru(II) complexes is greatly enhanced because the pyridyl groups are fused into the macrocyclic ring with stronger electron acceptor properties. Consequently, the fluorescence emission from the porphyrazine center can be directly pumped from the peripheral complexes by exciting in the Ru[Formula: see text]ZnTPyPz([Formula: see text]*) MLCT band, in contrast with the analogous porphyrin species. The electrochemical behavior of the ZnTRuPyPz complex exhibits the characteristic redox waves of [Ru[Formula: see text](bipy)2Cl] at 1.00 V, showing a 0.080 V increase in comparison with the ZnTRuPyP complex, consistent with stronger [Formula: see text]-back bonding interactions with the porphyrazine center. This observation was also corroborated by the pronounced spectroelectrochemical changes in the porphyrazine Q bands induced by the oxidation of the peripheral ruthenium complexes to Ru(III). The spectroscopic and electrochemical results indicate that the porphyrazines can be better than the porphyrins for developing electronically conjugated supramolecular systems. - New insights on the Jacobsite mineral from Bahia and related synthetic manganese-ferrite nanoparticles

Journal of Porous Materials, 2021
Ordered mesoporous silica (OMS) is an important and useful material for a variety of applications, including catalysis, adsorption, sensing and controlled drug delivery. The surface chemistry and the silanol groups on OMS pores are key properties for the potential modification and application of this material. This research aimed to synthesize (using standard protocols) and differentiate the accessibility and strength of the H-acceptor Si–OH from FDU-12, SBA-16, MCM-41 and SBA-15 by pyridine (Py) donor, where the first two have cubic pore structures and the last two have hexagonal pore structures. Donor–acceptor properties were assessed by calculation of the surface Si–OH densities by thermogravimetry (TG), H2O-TPD/MS, and 29Si MAS and CP/MAS NMR. The nature of the Si–OH groups on these materials was determined to be hydrogen-bonding sites using FT-IR spectroscopy of Py adsorption. The reactivity of these silanol groups was probed by Py-TG and slurry microcalorimetry of Py adsorption in cyclohexane. Differences in accessibility and reactivity were discussed considering the total potential sites on the surface (nOH) versus the actual sites that can react with the Py molecule (nPy). By using microcalorimetry, it was possible to quantitatively distinguish the strength of the sites: The acidity order was approximately the same as the relative amount of silanol groups (Si–OH) and Py on the surface of the OMS materials (αPy): FDU-12 > MCM-41 ≥ SBA-16 > SBA-15. - Langmuir Isotherms for Functionalized Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles with Cobalt(II) Ions Based on Zeta Potentials

Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, 2020
Minimizing the emission of industrial effluents and realizing the recovery/extraction of key elements such as the rare earths from low concentration solutions, or during water decontamination processes, are some of the biggest challenges of modern society. Accordingly, the preparation and characterization of a low cost recyclable and reusable superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION)/zeolite nanocomposite (Zmag) is described, and the possibility of their use for removal of heavy metals and ammonium/ammonia is discussed, generating water whose quality is in compliance with the more strict modern environmental laws. Such materials are suitable for realization of a more efficient dispersion method for adsorption in combination with magnetically aided concentration/separation processes for removal of contaminants. In fact, Zmag was shown to efficiently remove Pb and Hg, as well as NH4 from water, generating effluents that can be directly disposed in water bodies according to the current environmental law requirements, as stated by EPA (North America Environmental Protection Agency). That nanocomposite material has a competitive production cost and allowed a cutback in the nitrogen (NH3) content from 300 mg L (diluted slurry source) to less than 36 mg L. Furthermore, Zmag demonstrated high capacity to concentrate and recover in a cyclic way La. - On the Amazing Reactivity of the Ranelate Ion: New Applications of an Old Antiosporotic Drug
