Exploring environmental risk factors for diarrhea: Evidence from the Indonesian Health Survey, 2023 Muhammad Aidil Fitrah, Muhamad Zakki Saefurrohim, Yura Witsqa Firmansyah Environmental Analysis Health and Toxicology, 2026 Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Indonesia, especially in vulnerable age groups. Although access to clean water and sanitation has improved, the quality of environmental management and hygiene practices still varies across households and could potentially affect the incidence of diarrhea. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the association between various household environmental risk factors and the occurrence of diarrhea at the national level using data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI-Survei Kesehatan Indonesia). This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design, utilizing secondary data from the 2023 SKI. A total of 877,531 respondents from all provinces in Indonesia were included in the analysis. Independent variables comprised physical quality of drinking water, water sources, methods of water treatment and storage, sanitation systems, liquid and solid waste management, and hygiene practices. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted using logistic regression. The prevalence of diarrhea was 1.9% among respondents. Multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that poor physical quality of drinking water was the strongest predictor of diarrhea (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR] = 1.478; p = 0.000). Other significant factors included unsafe raw water sources (AOR = 1.199; p=0.001), inadequate sanitation (AOR = 0.762; p = 0.001), improper liquid waste disposal (AOR = 0.956; p = 0.001), poor solid waste management (AOR = 0.932; p = 0.027), inadequate hygiene practices (AOR = 0.872; p= 0.001), and use of open water storage containers (AOR=1.056; p = 0.004).. Household environmental factors play a critical role in the incidence of diarrhea in Indonesia. Effective diarrhea prevention strategies should include improvements in water quality, sanitation access, waste management, and community-based hygiene education. These findings can inform evidence-based policies to strengthen national programs for diarrhea control and prevention.
Risk Quotient Analysis of Ozone Pollutants on the Occupational Health of Scavengers at Sarimukti Landfill, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia Darwel Darwel, Sapta Suhardono, Andri Frediansyah, Yura Witsqa Firmansyah International Journal of Environmental Impacts, 2026 Limited studies have assessed the specific health risks associated with ozone exposure among informal waste workers in landfill environments, particularly in developing countries. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the Risk Quotient (RQ) of ozone pollutants among scavengers at the Sarimukti Landfill, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia.Applying the Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) approach, ozone concentrations were measured over three periods across two sampling points.Data were collected from 101 scavengers, including variables such as exposure time, frequency, body weight, and inhalation rate.Intake values, RQ, safe concentration thresholds (Cnk), safe exposure duration (t Enk(safe) ), and safe exposure frequency (f Enk(safe) ) were calculated under both real-time and 30-year projection scenarios. The results showed that real-time RQ values substantially exceeded the safe threshold (mean RQ = 27.183),indicating substantial short-term health risks.Although the projected 30-year values were lower (mean RQ = 7.630), they remained above the acceptablelimit (RQ > 1), reflecting potential chronic health risks. The average safe exposure time at maximum concentration was only 0.147 hours/day, while the safe frequency was limited to 5 days/year.These findings highlight the urgent need for integrating occupational health protections, air quality monitoring, and regulatory enforcement into landfill waste management systems.
Spatial autocorrelation analysis of diarrhea incidence in Bandung City, Indonesia in 2024 , Yura Witsqa Firmansyah, Adi Anggoro Parulian, , Sapta Suhardono, , Maura Hardjanti, , Bhisma Jaya Prasaja, , Diansyah -, , Ratih Kumala Dewi, , Muhammad Fadli Ramadhansyah, , Yohana Allyn Setyawati, and Journal of Public Health and Development, 2026 Diarrhea remains a significant public health issue worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that diarrhea accounts for approximately 1.7 billion cases annually, making it a leading cause of child mortality. The morbidity rate for diarrhea in Bandung City across all age groups was 25 per 1,000 population in 2019. This study analyzes the spatial autocorrelation of diarrhea incidence in Bandung City, Indonesia, using Moran’s index. A retrospective spatial analysis was conducted on 896 diarrhea cases recorded at Harapan Bunda Hospital, Bandung, from January 1 to June 30, 2024. Spatial autocorrelation was assessed using Moran’s I, with spatial units defined at the district level. The analysis incorporated ICD-10 classifications, including A06 (amoebiasis), A09 (diarrhea and gastroenteritis due to infectious causes), and O99.6 (digestive diseases complicating pregnancy). The results of autocorrelation were as follows: mild or some dehydration by age (Moran’s I = 0.396, p = 0.001), unspecified amoebiasis (Moran’s I = 0.421, p = 0.000), amoebiasis (Moran’s I = 0.508, p = 0.000), diarrhea and gastroenteritis of presumed infectious origin (Moran’s I = 0.450, p = 0.000), unspecified dehydration status by age (Moran’s I = 0.302, p = 0.000), digestive system diseases complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (Moran’s I = -0.450 , p = 0.000). These findings indicated a clustered distribution pattern, suggesting that diarrhea incidence in one location correlates with cases in surrounding locations. This study recommends targeted interventions for high-risk clusters, such as community-based health programs and environmental sanitation improvements.
Green nexus womenpreneurs: harnessing internal-external capabilities for sustainable MSMEs fashion Muhammad Alfarizi, Ngatindriatun Ngatindriatun, Yura Witsqa Firmansyah Research Journal of Textile and Apparel, 2025 Purpose This study aims to analyze the capabilities and external conditions of womenpreneur owners of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) Fashion EcoPrint Indonesia in green business practices and their implications for sustainable business performance. Design/methodology/approach This study chooses a quantitative approach with a sustainable business internal-external capability model. Using the structural equation modeling-partial least square analysis tool, the analysis was conducted on a sample of womenpreneurs who owned MSMEs EcoPrint Indonesia (n = 493). Findings In the internal capability dimension, total quality environment and green core competence affect green supply chain management, affecting green product innovation performance. Meanwhile, women entrepreneurs’ external capability dimensions (regulation, customer awareness of the environment and technological innovation infrastructure) are connected to sustainable development business capabilities, which affect the performance of green process innovation. The study confirms that green products and processes have the potential to influence sustainable business performance. A key finding is the strong influence of environment-based total quality management governance on both sides. At the same time, womenpreneurs have a significant impact on their respective dimensions. Research limitations/implications This study has implications for increasing competency, Sustainable MSME industrial infrastructure, and protecting women in developing countries. The theoretical implications of creating a model that examines the impact of womenpreneurs’ internal and external abilities on eco-friendly businesses’ success are significant for developing nations’ promising growth. Originality/value This study explores women’s contributions to family well-being and environment-based economies, focusing on eco-friendly supply chain management and sustainable external capabilities of women entrepreneurs in Indonesia, using a gender equality approach in developing economies.
Environmental Health Risk Analysis of Methane Gas Pollutants in a Landfill of West Bandung, Indonesia: Risk Quotient Study and LandGEM Model Yura Witsqa Firmansyah, Ari Probandari, Bhisma Murti, Prabang Setyono Bio Web of Conferences, 2025 Methane gas emissions from landfills, especially in areas like Sarimukti Landfill of West Bandung, Indonesia, pose significant health risks to residents and waste pickers. This study, using the Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) approach and LandGEM modeling, evaluated methane exposure risks. The methane concentration in ambient air was 7.36 mg/m3, with a real-time mean intake of 0.826 mg/kg/day and a Risk Quotient (RQ) of 41.304. A 30-year projection showed a reduced intake of 0.226 mg/kg/day and a lower RQ of 11.331. A significant negative correlation (r= -0.241, p = 0.015) was found between RQ and respiratory symptoms among waste pickers, with an odds ratio of 0.645 (CI, 0.004 - 1.163), indicating that higher exposure is linked to worsened respiratory health. The risk control analysis recommended that exposure should be limited to no more than 0.222 hours per session, with fewer than eight exposures per week. Methane emissions are projected to continue rising, peaking at around 2,500 mega-grams per year by 2025, but at a slower rate than carbon dioxide. These findings highlight the critical need for active landfill gas management and stricter regulations to reduce health risks. Implementing effective control measures is essential for minimizing the harmful effects of methane exposure on vulnerable populations.
A Descriptive of Environmental Conditions in Stunting Case Areas in West Pasaman Regency with a Spatial Approach Mukhlis Mukhlis, Sari Arlinda, Indang Dewata, Elsa Yuniarti, Yura Witsqa Firmansyah Universal Journal of Public Health, 2025 Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue in children under five years old, characterized by a shorter height compared to their peers. Stunted children are more susceptible to illnesses and face a higher risk of degenerative diseases in adulthood. In West Sumatra Province, the stunting prevalence increased from 23.3% in 2021 to 25.2% in 2022. West Pasaman Regency is among the regions with stunting prevalence above the provincial average. Poor hygiene and sanitation, leading to infectious diseases, significantly contribute to stunting. This study aims to describe environmental conditions with a spatial approach in stunting case areas in West Pasaman Regency. The type of research is descriptive with a spatial approach. A cross-sectional study aimed to capture areas with stunting cases totaling 330 mothers (total sample) in the period January to December 2024. Data collection included observation, interviews, and wastewater quality measurements in selected samples. The findings reveal that total of 11 sub-districts in West Pasaman Regency do not meet good wastewater quality standards, while several sub-districts such as Ranah Batahan, Sungai Alur, Gunung Tuleh, and Pasaman have poor environmental conditions due to a lack of waste management and hygiene facilities. Community-based interventions, such as weekly community effort activities and educational programs, are recommended to improve awareness and management of wastewater facilities, thereby reducing stunting risks.
