Language ideologies and stancetaking in refugee identity negotiations: exploring multilingual refugees’ narratives of language use in Turkey Yasemin Erdoğan-Öztürk, Çiğdem Sağın-Şimşek Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, 2025 This study investigates the identity negotiations and language ideologies among/around Syrian refugees residing in Turkey by concentrating on the case of two multilingual, Syrian graduate students who have been forcedly displaced from Syria and resettled in Turkey. The study particularly explores participants’ metalinguistic narratives of their language choices, multilingual repertoires and identity positionings. We argue that everyday talk about migration and migrants either within the migrant communities or in the majority society needs to be conceptualised with reference to a language ideological framework combined with a stancetaking approach. Our analysis reveals that the participants’ linguistic practices and identity positions are heavily invoked by/through their engagements with the Turkish language and community and influenced by the highly nationalist anti-refugee discourse prevailing in Turkey. The participants negotiate their self-identity with respect to and in sharp contrast with widely- circulating negative discourses of refugee representations. Language choice and code-switching appear as major discursive and interactional strategies indexing stancetaking in the construction of narratives within the interview context.
Exploring the intersections of language ideologies and affect: The case of multilingual ‘returnee’ women in Turkey Yasemin Erdoğan-Öztürk European Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2024 This study explores the discursive construction and negotiation of exclusion and belonging, at the conceptual intersection of language ideologies and affect. Focusing on a group of multilingual ‘return’ migrant women of Turkish heritage, who were born, raised, and educated in Germany in Turkish migrant families and later settled in Turkey as highly-qualified adult professionals, the paper delves into the complexities of their lived experiences of languages. Based on in-depth interviews with eight multilingual women with diasporic upbringings in Germany and now residing in Turkey, the paper argues that the construction of authentic membership and the sense of (un)belonging is achieved through intensive affective engagements with standard and prescriptivist language ideologies in Turkey. It is further discussed that prevailing hegemonic language ideologies in both diasporic and local contexts create unique discursive sites of a marginalized and gendered vulnerability for the multilingual ‘returnee’ women in the study.
"Gender equality discourse is the glass ceiling we hit here": Women's academic leadership narratives in a gender-sensitive university context in Turkey Hale Işık-Güler, Yasemin Erdoğan-Öztürk Globalisation Geopolitics and Gender in Professional Communication, 2022 This chapter explores the leadership negotiations and discourses articulated by women academic leaders by focusing on a particular case of a gender-sensitive university context in Turkey. It investigates how women in academic leadership positions construct, negotiate and reflect on their leadership practices and gender identities in their personal narratives. The study adopts a narrative analytical framework, based on semi-structured interviews with a group of senior academic leaders at a prestigious university in Turkey. The reflections of women as senior administrators revealed that they experience university leadership as a vulnerable, challenging and precarious path. The most salient manifestations of gendered barriers emerged in the form of an excessive amount of emotional labour resulting from role conflicts between family and work and, at times, an unwelcoming circle. Yet, the analysis of personal narratives revealed that women displayed a very high level of meta-awareness of the gendered nature of senior academic leadership and globally valid masculine discourses around leadership. In the small stories unfolding in interactions, the notion of leadership was observed to be formulated as a discursive site where women open up the norms, practices and ideas around leadership for discussion. Storytelling allowed women to subvert the normative leadership discourses by using multiple interactional and discursive strategies.
