Structured liquid-based reconfigurable all-liquid optical fibers Sai Zhao, Yufeng Wang, Xinke Tang, Jiangang Zhang, Weixi Wu, Yuchen Fu, Sai Tak Chu, Yang Ren, Xubo Liu, Xun Guan, Thomas P. Russell, Yu Chai Nature Communications, 2026 Quartz optical fibers are brittle, difficult to repair, and lack reconfigurability, limiting their adaptability in underwater communication. To overcome these impediments, here we show reconfigurable all-liquid optical fibers (RAOFs) produced by structured liquid, tuned by the interfacial assembly and jamming of nanoparticle surfactants at the water-oil interface (interfacial tension <10 mN m-1, refractive index contrast of 0.083). These RAOFs combine the structural stability of the interfacial assemblies with the inherent flexibility of liquids. They support real-time communication on an Ethernet platform (up to 1 Gbps), providing a practical alternative to conventional optical fibers for optical interconnects. Their liquid nature enables broken fibers to be repaired rapidly by a coalescence process. Their softness affords on-demand reconfigurability that enables in-situ fabrication of reconfigurable optical fibers and dynamic manipulation of signal transmission. RAOFs provide a versatile, self-healing, and resilient solution for optical communication systems in dynamic environments. Reconfigurable all-liquid optical fibers enable gigabit-speed communication while offering softness, rapid self-healing, and on-demand reconfiguration, providing a resilient alternative to brittle quartz fibers in dynamic application environments.
An anomalous interfacial structural-compositional rearrangement in a bulk granular nanostructured glass Shu Fu, Xiaoshuang Yin, Yu Lou, Zhenduo Wu, Xubin Ye, Sinan Liu, He Zhu, Yang Ren, Xun-Li Wang, Tao Feng, Gerhard Wilde, Xiaohui Yu, Si Lan Communications Materials, 2026 In crystalline materials, grain boundaries have been extensively studied and are acknowledged either as structural defects or as distinct phases, referred to as complexions. However, the nature of interfaces in amorphous systems, particularly whether amorphous-amorphous interfaces constitute separate phases and their structural characteristics, remains unresolved. In this study, we report a Pd40Ni40P20 bulk granular nanostructured glass (GNG) that exhibits an interfacial structural-compositional rearrangement. The GNG was fabricated by compacting glassy Pd40Ni40P20 nanoparticles with surface compositional segregation under a triaxial pressure of 8 GPa. The as-prepared GNG shows Pd40Ni40P20 nanograins with Ni-enriched interfacial regions. Upon heating, the anomalous structural-compositional rearrangement occurs specifically at the amorphous interfaces, manifested by a deep exothermic peak at a temperature TS below the glass transition temperature Tg. This structural-compositional rearrangement induces significant modifications in both compositional fluctuations and medium-range ordering, subsequently modifying the material’s mechanical properties. Whether amorphous-amorphous interfaces constitute separate phases requires clarification. This study reports a Pd40Ni40P20 bulk granular nanostructured glass with an interfacial structural-compositional rearrangement.
Orientation-dependent mutual crystalline and amorphous order in a single phase solid Rui Xia, Jiantao Li, Yorick A. Birkhölzer, Haoyang Peng, Kangning Zhao, Ruohan Yu, Congli Sun, Lei Zhang, Qi Liu, Sungsik Lee, Tianyi Li, Yang Ren, Jie Zheng, Johan E. ten Elshof, Mark Huijben Nature Communications, 2026 Amorphous materials distinguish themselves from crystalline materials by lacking long-range order while retaining structural order at the local scale (2–5 Å). However, the complexity in topological and chemical order prevents current characterization tools from fully unveiling the structure in disordered materials. Consequently, the nature of medium-range order in amorphous materials has remained elusive. The Zachariasen and crystal competing models have been proposed to describe disordered phases and have both been verified through synthesis and characterization. The main difference between them is thought to be whether the amorphous phase shows medium-range order. Here we demonstrate a form of organized inorganic matter that is amorphous in two dimensions, while exhibiting long-range order and a high degree of crystallinity in the third. The structure consists of periodically stacked 2-dimensional amorphous Nb-W-O monolayers without long-range in-plane order. The unique periodic and therefore crystalline stacking along one principal axis enables direct imaging and revealed that the amorphous Nb-W-O monolayers formed in agreement with the Zachariasen model for 2 dimensions. Our findings show that the gap between crystalline and amorphous materials does not only depend on medium-range order but can also apply to principal dimensions within the same solid.
Elinvar Materials: Recent Progress and Challenges Wenjie Li, Yang Ren Advanced Engineering Materials, 2026 The Elinvar effect, characterized by an invariable elastic modulus with varying temperatures, drives technological innovation across diverse domains—from low‐modulus compliant actuators in soft robotics to high‐modulus protective shielding in aerospace applications. The scarcity of materials exhibiting the Elinvar effect while simultaneously meeting other practical requirements underscores the need for a comprehensive understanding of its underlying mechanisms. Although conceptually straightforward, the physical origins of the Elinvar effect remain complex and incompletely elucidated. This review explores recent progress in the field, distilling the key concepts underpinning leading contemporary Elinvar materials. We also discuss future prospects for these materials and outline the path toward achieving full control of a material's elastic modulus in response to thermal stimuli.
Composition engineering of short-range-ordered polyhedra in Ni-Mo-P-B metallic glass for electrochemical sensing Zhongzheng Yao, He Zhu, Yu Lou, Fan Xue, Jingqian Huang, Hua Ji, Wei-Di Liu, Xindong Zhu, Sinan Liu, Jianrong Zeng, Yang Ren, Xun-Li Wang, Yang Lu, Si Lan Materials Today, 2026 Metallic glasses (MGs), despite exhibiting superior electrochemical catalytic and sensing activity to crystalline solids, remain difficult to rationally design because the structural units that directly correlate to active sites are poorly resolved. Here, we address this challenge by showing that a small change in Ni content (±4 at%) in Ni-Mo-P-B MGs gives precise control of short‑range-ordered (SRO) polyhedral motifs and their medium‑range connections. Synchrotron X-ray analysis reveals that the Ni 64 Mo 16 P 16 B 4 (Ni 64 ) stabilizes ten-coordinated (Z10) bi-capped square archimedean antiprisms (BSAPs) as the dominant SRO polyhedral, whereas Ni 60 Mo 20 P 16 B 4 (Ni 60 ) and Ni 68 Mo 12 P 16 B 4 (Ni 68 ) are dominated by nine-coordinate (Z9) tricapped trigonal prisms (TTPs). Crucially, this engineered SRO dramatically enhances the electrochemical glucose sensing: Ni 64 delivers ultrahigh sensitivity, a wide linear range, and stable operation over seven days, whose performance is far superior to conventional crystalline probes. First-principles calculations reveal that only at a Ni/Mo ratio of 4 does short-range chemical ordering favor the highly symmetric Z10 BSAPs with two Mo atoms occupying the two polyhedral caps. These Mo‑capped Z10 clusters optimally modulate Mo-Ni electronic interactions, lowering the *OH adsorption barrier and boosting catalytic reactivity. A miniaturized glucose sensor was fabricated by integrated the MG with a screen-printed electrode, demonstrating the practical applicability. Notably, we found that the dominant polyhedra show homology to local building blocks of nearby crystalline phases, suggesting that amorphous structures inherit crystal-like motifs that govern both stability and properties. Our work establishes an atomic-scale structural engineering paradigm for MG design, bridging crystalline-amorphous structural homology with functional optimization, and deepening the understanding of structure–property correlations in MG systems.
