Impact of Building Dimensions and Setbacks around Buildings on the Sky-View Factor of a Regulated Residential Urban Canyon in India Binit Kumar, Basudatta Sarkar Journal of Urban Planning and Development, 2025 The climatic conditions in urban areas are affected by man-made features, including buildings. Building geometry determines the sky-view factor (SVF) of a canyon. A higher SVF is necessary to mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect, whereas a lower SVF enhances pedestrian thermal comfort during summer days. However, variations in building dimensions and spaces between buildings are dictated by local building regulations, limiting the options available to urban designers. This study investigates aspects of urban planning policies and aims to understand the impacts of varying building dimensions and setbacks surrounding buildings on the SVF measured at the midpoint. The SVF of several idealized urban canyons, representing regulated residential development in India with permitted variations in building dimensions and setbacks, was estimated using a vector-based method. The results indicate that development with detached housing featuring identical buildings and maintaining a straight building line exhibited a higher SVF. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis revealed that building height and depth were strongly related to the SVF and front setback. The significance of the front setback and building height decreased as the plot area decreased, whereas that of the building depth increased. Accordingly, planning policies may be formulated to enhance the SVF, thereby mitigating the UHI effect.
Exploring the significance of rotation angle in SVF estimate using a vector-based method Binit Kumar, Basudatta Sarkar Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers Municipal Engineer, 2025 In a vector-based method for sky-view factor (SVF) calculation, selecting an appropriate rotation angle and search radius is important for accurately estimating the SVF. Researchers have used varying values for rotation angles, ranging from 1° to 22.5°. However, no rotation angle standardisation was performed. In this study, the relationship between the SVF and rotation angle was explored in an idealised symmetrical finite canyon. The SVF function in the Shadow library of R was used, with angles varying from 0.001° to 60°. The results showed that the rotation angle was not a statistically significant parameter in the SVF estimation. However, with a constant canyon length and height, the SVF increased with increasing canyon width, although with several breakpoints. Increasing the canyon length with a constant canyon height and width also resulted in breakpoints with decreasing step-widths. By varying the rotation angle, a linear pattern with breakpoints was observed at the angles obtained by dividing 360° by n, where n is an integer. The study concluded that a rotation angle that is a factor of 90° accurately estimated the SVF. Moreover, for asymmetrical canyons, rather than only lowering the rotation angles, SVF should be calculated at multiple points.
