  • The Role of Endocrine Disruptors and Environmental Chemicals in Causing Cancer: Focusing on Genetic and Epigenetic Mechanisms

    Scripta Medica Banja Luka, 2026
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and environmental pollutants are ubiquitous and increasingly linked to the aetiology of cancer. This review synthesises existing evidence on the carcinogenic potential of EDCs, including bisphenols, phthalates, pesticides, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, with a focus on genetic and epigenetic pathways. The molecular mechanisms by which these chemicals induce carcinogenesis, including DNA damage, chromosomal aberrations, dysregulation of oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes and alterations in DNA repair was critically accessed. Epidemiological research emphasises epigenetic changes, including aberrant DNA methylation, histone modifications and deregulated non-coding RNA expression, which mediate long-term and potentially transgenerational effects of exposure. The interplay among endocrine signalling, oxidative stress, inflammation and epigenetic reprogramming is discussed in relation to hormone-dependent and hormone-independent cancers. Epidemiological, in vivo and in vitro experimental evidence, together with high-throughput omics data, were integrated to strengthen mechanistic plausibility. This review identified important research gaps, including low-dose and mixture effects, timing of exposure and population-wide vulnerability and provides future directions for risk assessment and regulatory policy. Greater insight into the genetic and epigenetic effects of EDCs is needed to advance cancer prevention and inform evidence-based community health interventions.

  • A Diagnostic Study Using STARD Platform on Liquid-Based Cytology in Cervical Smear and Its Positivity Rate among Females with Abnormal Vaginal Conditions Attending a Tertiary Care Center

    Journal of Cytology, 2024
Background: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a newer method of preparing cervical cell samples. This technique involves collecting cells in a liquid fixative and preparing and evaluating them. Aim: This study aims to investigate cervical smears prepared using the Ezi-Prep LBC method and analyze the positivity rate for cervical cancer and assess the diagnostic accuracy of LBC in detecting cervical abnormalities among females with abnormal vaginal conditions attending a tertiary care center. Materials and Methods: The present diagnostic study was performed in a tertiary care hospital over a period of 1 year (April 1, 2021–November 30, 2021). A total of 230 women, aged 21–70 years, presented at the gynecology outpatient department for either routine cervical screening or with complaints of vaginal bleeding, discharge, or pelvic pain. Cervical smears were prepared using the Ezi-Prep method and stained with ULTRA-PAP stain. Results: LBC smears are monolayer smears and are without nuclear overlapping with spread over a diameter of 16 mm. Minimum cellular overlapping and crowding were observed in LBC smears. The mean age of the participants was 35.5 ± 5.1 years. The smears were studied by using nine morphological parameters. Conclusion: The majority of the smears were inflammatory smears. A total of 16 cases and three cases were found to be bacterial vaginosis and candidiasis, respectively. In an 8-month study, HSIL was found in two cases, whereas LSIL was found in only one case. The positivity rate was observed to be 0.9% in HSIL cases and 0.4% in LSIL cases, 0.9% ASC-US case, and 0.4% invasive carcinoma case.
  • Dengue dynamics: Prognostic and disease monitoring through molecular and serological profiling of clinical isolates
Vikas Tiwari, Mohd Afzal, Abhishek Sharma, Jaishree Tiwari
Journal of Vector Borne Diseases, 2024
Background & objectives: Dengue fever is a mosquito-bome illness that affects millions of people worldwide every year. With no vaccination available, early detection and treatment are critical. It is found in 112 countries and poses a risk to travellers, particularly in metropolitan areas. Laboratory diagnoses vary according to objectives, resources, and schedule, with sensitivity and specificity must be balanced for effective testing. Methods: The current study is a cross-sectional diagnostic study and samples from suspected patients of dengue was collected from May to November 2023 and transported to laboratory. RT-PCR and Dengue Duo Rapid test diagnosis techniques were used and total 48 clinical samples were included in this study. Results: A total of 48 clinical samples were collected. Blood was collected from the suspected cases of dengue and further subjected to different molecular and serological parameters. Serum was separated from all blood samples. RNA was isolated by silica column extraction method which is further utilized as a template for amplification and detection of dengue serotyping. Master Mix was prepared for the amplification and detection of dengue virus by Rotor-Gene Q Real-Time PCR Machine and further serological profiling of positive dengue cases was studied by conventional PCR. Interpretation & conclusion: Our laboratory effectively standardized an RT-PCR-based approach for molecular identification of dengue virus in clinical specimens. This adaptive technique, which uses numerous primer sets, displayed good specificity and sensitivity in serotype detection. The technology provides for quick and reliable identification of dengue virus infections, allowing for targeted treatment and preventative actions for successful disease management in highly populated regions.
