Vegetation patterns of Brazilian rocky savannas, with emphasis on limestone cerrado MARCELO HENRIQUE O. PINHEIRO, BRUNA T. CASTELLAN, ANA VICTORIA M. BARBOSA, CALEBE S. DUTRA, HENRIQUE A. DE OLIVEIRA, FELIPE F. NAVES, RAFAEL ARRUDA, WAGNER LUIZ DOS SANTOS, RENATA G. UDULUTSCH Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2025 Floristic studies were conducted in three rocky cerrados, two limestone (designated as A1 and B) and one arenitic (A2), in the Pontal do Triângulo Mineiro region. We aimed to identify floristic patterns of their shrub-tree components that could contribute to the characterization of these rocky cerrados, especially the limestone ones. We surveyed 20 plots (10 m x 10 m) in areas A1 and A2, and 85 quadrants in B. To understand the species’ contributions in terms of habitat occurrence, we classified then as generalists (G), savanna-associated (S), or forest-associated (F), and identified those occurring in rocky environments. We studied species richness through rarefaction curves and performed floristic similarity analyses using UPGMA (Jaccard index - between A1 and A2) and NMDS (Horn index - among the three rocky cerrados, 15 savanna areas, and eight deciduous forest areas). We observed a lower occurrence of strict savanna or forest species and rocky environments in all three studied areas, confirming findings from other authors. Despite a higher similarity with savanna formations, floristic differences recorded locally (UPGMA) and regionally (NMDS) supported the hypothesis that limestone cerrados may exhibit floristic patterns distinguishing them from other rocky cerrados.
Duguetia rolimii (Annonaceae), a new large tree species from the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo, Brazil Márcio L. Bazante, Paul J. M. Maas, Geovane S. Siqueira, Jefferson G. Lima, Renata G. Udulutsch, Maria Regina de V. Barbosa Acta Botanica Brasilica, 2024 A new species of Duguetia from Reserva Natural Vale, in the Atlantic Forest of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, is described and illustrated, and an updated key to the Duguetia species from this state is presented. Duguetia rolimii is known only from two large trees, restricted to the municipality of Linhares. It resembles D. sooretamae in having young twigs densely covered with stellate scales, narrow and shiny leaves with similar dimensions, and fruits with more than 200 fertile monocarps. Nevertheless, these two species can be distinguished from each other mainly by the type of vegetation where they occur, plant size, the density of stellate scales at the lower side of the leaves, the angle between the primary and secondary leaf veins, the shape of the flower buds, length of the upper bract, the shape of the fertile monocarps and indument of the areoles. Comments on distribution, conservation status and field photos of the new species, and comparisons with other related species are provided.

Zeferino, Andréia Zelenski, Fernando O. Zuloaga, Alexandre R. Zuntini Taxon, 2022 The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of aworking list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world ’ s known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis , concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highlycollaborativeproject that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overviewof the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world ’ s most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “ scientific reductionism ” , with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora. Supporting Information may be found online in the Supporting Information section at the end of the article.

Brazilian flora 2020: Innovation and collaboration to meet target 1 of the global strategy for plant conservation (GSPC) R. Erkens Rodriguesia, 2018 The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.
Climbers of the Estação Ecológica de Assis, State of São Paulo, Brazil: Floristics and identification keys Nicácio Ribeiro Neto, Raquel Aparecida Ronqui, Letícia Chedid Seidinger, Renata Giassi Udulutsch Phytokeys, 2018 Climbers are an important life form in the understory and canopy of tropical forests. They are characterised by constant root connection to the ground and use of other species, mainly trees, as support in their search for higher light. In addition, they have an important role in ecological succession in forest clearings, as they are able to develop rapidly in these environments. Climbers can have high species richness in the biomes in which they are present. Since climbers are of little economic importance, they are usually cut down without regard for their contribution to maintenance of biodiversity and to the structure of the forest. Floristic studies of climbers in Brazil are still scarce and more research is needed. The goal of our research was to develop a floristic survey and identification keys for the climbers of the Estação Ecológica de Assis (EEA) in the cerrado biome of São Paulo state, Brazil. Sampling was carried out every two weeks over ten months, along trails and edges of forest within the EEA. Identification keys were built based on vegetative characters. Thirty-two climber species, belonging to 24 genera and 13 families were recorded. The families with the largest number of species were Bignoniaceae (8 species), Malpighiaceae (5), Apocynaceae (3) and Smilacaceae (3). The richest genera were Fridericia (4 species), Banisteriopsis (3) and Smilax (3). The number of species recorded for the forest fragment reveals the important role of climbers in the diversity of forested savannahs (“cerradões”) in the State of São Paulo.
First record of Mansoa minensis M.M.Silva-Castro (Bignoniaceae, Bignonieae) in Espírito Santo, Brazil Renata Giassi Udulutsch, Geovane Souza Siqueira, Pedro Dias Check List, 2018 Mansoa minensis M.M.Silva-Castro is reported for the first time for the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. We provide an updated description, comparisons with closely related species, and suggest a revised conservation status for this species. We also present an identification key for all species of Mansoa that occur in Espírito Santo.
