  • Tamarind seed polymer-based formulations: advances and applications in biomedical science
Ramya Sri, Tanmoy Ghosh, Basavaraj B. V., Lakshmi Priya P.
Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, 2025
Tamarind seed polymer has garnered significant attention in biomedical science due to its exceptional properties, like biocompatibility, biodegradability, and adaptability for drug delivery. Derived from tamarind seeds, tamarind gum, a natural polysaccharide, shows great potential as a gelling agent for controlled drug release. Its versatility makes it suitable for delivering both water-soluble and water-insoluble drugs. This opens up exciting opportunities in areas such as oral drug delivery, wound healing, tissue regeneration, anti-inflammatory treatments, and ophthalmic drug delivery. Tamarind seed-based formulations have the remarkable ability to modify drug release rates, enhance drug stability, and improve bioavailability, making them a promising option for advancing healthcare. This review delves into the advancements and ongoing research surrounding tamarind seed polymer systems, highlighting their diverse applications and untapped potential in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields.
  • Advancements in polymer-based approaches in diabetic wound healing: a comprehensive review
Lakshmi Priya P., Tanmoy Ghosh, Ramya Sri, Basavaraj B. V.
Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, 2025
Diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, often leads to chronic wounds due to impaired healing processes, marked by prolonged inflammation, delayed blood vessel formation, and abnormal collagen production. These issues disrupt normal tissue regeneration, slowing healing. To address these challenges, polymer-based wound dressings are being explored as a promising solution. Natural polymers like alginate, chitosan, and hyaluronic acid, as well as synthetic ones like PCL, PLA, and PLGA, offer potential for more effective healing. These materials can be used in advanced delivery systems, such as nanofibrous scaffolds, nanoparticles, and hydrogels, which help deliver medications, maintain a moist healing environment, and stimulate cell growth. By improving the wound environment, polymer-based systems provide new hope for diabetic patients with slow-to-heal wounds, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and accelerating healing. These innovations could significantly improve the management of chronic wounds in diabetes.
  • Unlocking the Power of Electrospinning: A Review of Cutting-Edge Polymers and their Impact on Scaffold Design and Performance
Tanmoy Ghosh, Aditya Nemadea, Vineeth Kumar K., Shruthi N., Shwetha V., Pushpalatha C.
    Current Drug Delivery, 2025
Electrospun scaffolds are pivotal in tissue engineering due to their ability to mimic the Extracellular Matrix (ECM). Despite their potential, challenges such as, two-dimensional structure, limited load bearing capacity, and low mechanical strength restrict their application. This review explores advancements in electrospinning techniques and materials, highlighting methods like coaxial electrospinning, which enables the encapsulation of therapeutic agents, and the integration with 3D printing to create hybrid scaffolds with improved cell infiltration. Characterization techniques assessed by different researchers, such as scaffold morphology, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility, show that scaffolds with high spatial interconnectivity and controlled alignment enhance cell orientation and migration. Innovations in smart polymers and stimuli-responsive materials have furthered scaffold functionality. While recent advancements address some limitations, issues with scalability and production uniformity remain. Future research should optimize fabrication parameters and explore novel materials to enhance scaffold performance, requiring collaborative efforts and technological innovations to expand their practical applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
  • Thiolated tamarind seed polymer–chitosan composite scaffolds for enhanced skin tissue regeneration
Ramya Sri, Tanmoy Ghosh, Damodar Nayak, A. G. Shashank, P. Lakshmi Priya, Mrinmoy Basak, B. V. Basavaraj
Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, 2025
The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of a tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP)-based scaffold for promoting skin tissue regeneration. The TSP was extracted and chemically modified through thiolation, which boosted its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing abilities, while also improving its mucoadhesive properties. Composite scaffolds were developed using thiolated TSP and chitosan, with cinnamaldehyde incorporated to improve structural crosslinking. The scaffolds were characterized for their physicochemical properties, including functional group analysis (FTIR), thermal behavior (DSC), crystallinity (XRD), swelling, porosity, degradation, and water vapor transmission. Among the formulations, the optimized scaffold (S3) exhibited a swelling index of 310.42 ± 2.14%, porosity of 78.65 ± 1.03%, and hydrolytic degradation of 28.46 ± 0.94% over 7 days, along with good moisture retention and pronounced antibacterial effects. Cytotoxicity evaluation using the MTT assay confirmed its safety on human dermal fibroblasts. In vivo wound healing studies in rats revealed significantly enhanced wound contraction (96.32 ± 1.12% by day 14), improved collagen deposition, and complete epithelial regeneration, as supported by histological analysis. These findings suggest that the developed thiolated TSP–chitosan scaffold could serve as an effective and natural alternative for wound healing applications.
