International Journal of Power Electronics and Drive Systems, 2025
The three-phase multi-level inverter is considered one of the main power sources in industrial applications as well as in renewable energy applications. Therefore, researchers are interested in improving the efficiency of the inverter by reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) value to its lowest limits. Also, one of the factors for improving the efficiency of the inverter is reducing the number of switches used, as it contributes to reducing the resulting losses. This research resorts to using many optimal algorithms to find the optimal values for the inverter gating angles that ensure reducing the THD value, as well as using a suitable topology with a least number of switches. The research used five algorithms known for their accuracy and efficiency, genetic algorithm (GA), gray wolf optimization (GWO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), slime mould algorithm (SMA), and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) separately. Then, extracting the distinctive characteristics of these algorithms in a hybrid curve and using it in driving the three-phase multi-level inverter (MLI) with 31 levels. The research displays the voltages and currents of the inverter as well as the frequency analysis for three-phase inductive load resulting from simulating the inverter using MATLAB software.
• Reducing Harmonic Distortions in Multilevel Inverter Based on PSO
Taha Ahmad Hussein, Jawad Hasn Alkhateeb, Dahaman Ishak
Proceedings 2025 4th International Conference on Electronics Representation and Algorithm Artificial Intelligence Creating Tomorrow S World Today Icera 2025, 2025
A single-phase multilevel inverter (MLI) capable of generating multiple voltage levels is used as an AC power source at a frequency of 50Hz with minimal total harmonic distortion (THD%). The key factor in reducing THD is determining the optimal switching angles of the inverter, as optimization algorithms provide the best solutions to eliminate or minimize many harmonics associated with inverter voltages, thereby significantly enhancing inverter efficiency. For this purpose, these optimal angles are derived by solving the trigonometric equations for the inverter's output voltage, obtained through Fourier analysis, aiming to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD%). Objective function equations are introduced into MATLAB software, utilizing the PSO algorithm, and the best results are selected by developing a MATLAB program to calculate the THD% value over a wide range of modulation index (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0<m<1$</tex>). Performance analysis and validation are conducted through simulation models and an experimental prototype. The selective harmonic elimination technique (SHE) is incorporated to ensure the elimination of third-order harmonics that negatively affect the inverter's efficiency. The results demonstrate that the multilevel inverter can effectively generate multiple voltage levels while maintaining low THD%. Voltage and current measurements, along with frequency analysis results, indicate the cancellation of selected harmful harmonics, leading to a noticeable improvement in system efficiency.

• A Three-Phase Multilevel Inverter Synthesized with 31 Levels and Optimal Gating Angles Based on the GA and GWO to Supply a Three-Phase Induction Motor
Taha Ahmad Hussein, Dahaman Ishak, Mohamad Tarnini
Energies, 2024
A three-phase multilevel inverter (MLI), synthesized with 31 levels in regard to its output voltage, is used to provide the AC supply to a three-phase, squirrel cage induction motor. The gating angles required for the 30 power switches on the MLI are optimized using both the genetic algorithm (GA) and the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), in which the optimal angles are determined through solving the trigonometric equations taken from Fourier analysis to target the minimum total harmonic distortion (THD) at the MLI output. A simulation model and an experimental prototype are developed for performance analysis and validation. The results demonstrate that the MLI is effectively able to produce 31 levels of three-phase AC output voltage, with the THD not exceeding 5% when loaded with a resistive load and a three-phase induction motor. The voltage and current are measured and recorded for different loads and operating conditions, including the amount of energy consumed by the load. The results of the frequency analysis demonstrate that most of the triple harmonics, which can harm the efficiency of the inverter, are cancelled.
• Practical Implementation and Comparative Analysis of SPWM Techniques Using Fuzzy Logic Control on FPGA-Based Seven-Level Inverter for Power Quality Enhancement
Ali Ahmad Thenon, Taha Ahmed Hussein
2024 IEEE 22nd Student Conference on Research and Development Scored 2024, 2024
This paper practically implements and compares different Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) techniques on a grid-connected seven-level Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter (CHBMLI). The implementation is performed using Intel MAX 10 FPGA technology. A Zero Crossing Detector (ZCD) with hysteresis and Phase Locked Loop (PLL) realized within the FPGA is used for grid synchronization. A further expansion applied the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for control of power injected into the grid, thus reducing THD in total and improving the quality of power. Finally, the paper prescribed vigilance to SPWM techniques including Phase Shifted PWM (PSPWM), Phase Disposition PWM (PDPWM), Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (PODPWM), Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM (APODPWM) and Saw-tooth Rotation PWM (SRPWM). PSPWM technology combining fuzzy logic control processes emerged with the least current THD and enhanced power qualities thus recommended for application in microgrid applications.
• Artificial Intelligence Algorithms vs SVPWM for Optimal Performance of MLI Driving Three-Phase Machines
Taha Ahmad Hussein, Dahaman Ishak
Proceedings International Conference on Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineering Icecie, 2024
The performance of the three-phase multilevel inverter (MLI) is monitored and analyzed using genetic algorithm as an intelligent algorithm for solving mathematical equations accompanying the inverter operation. This performance is compared when employing the traditional space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique to drive the MLI. SVPWM is commonly used for applications in the power electronics field. The gating angles of the inverters are extracted using the selective harmonic elimination (SHE) concept for optimal switching using artificial algorithms and monitoring the performance of the inverter when loaded with a three-phase motor. Then monitoring the performance of the inverter when extracting these angles using SVPWM techniques. The inverter's voltages, currents, and load characteristics are analyzed, as well as the frequency analysis of the variables, while checking the active and reactive power levels injected to the load. A distinct advantage has been indicated for algorithmic technology compared to SVPWM technique for most variables. A detailed MATLAB model with reduced number of switches for three phase multilevel inverter is built and thoroughly analyzed for both techniques. Also, a practical 31 level single phase inverter is built for testing and measurement.
