    The fashion industry is currently associated with numerous socio‐environmental impacts. Various efforts have emerged to explore pathways toward more sustainable fashion. This study aims to conduct an umbrella review to understand the prevailing perspectives and to identify the proposed paths toward fashion, sustainability, and a decolonial approach within scientific literature. Key areas of discussion identified in this work include policy, labor, supply chain, industry, production processes, product development, business models, marketing, post‐consumption, and consumer. Findings indicate that most studies suggest incremental changes without examining in‐depth transformations in economic or social organization.

    Esta Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL) teve como objetivo identificar na literatura as diversas metodologias qualitativas utilizadas para a pesquisa no contexto da justiça climática. Os critérios de inclusão englobam estudos integralmente disponíveis nas bases científicas selecionadas, publicados em periódicos revisados por pares, que exploraram os temas de justiça climática utilizando metodologia qualitativa ou mistas, no período dos últimos 10 anos (2014-2023). Já os critérios de exclusão foram estudos indisponíveis online, duplicados e pesquisas que possuíam as palavras no título e/ou palavras-chaves e/ou resumo, porém o tema era marginal no artigo e estudos com mais de 10 anos de publicação. Foram identificados 34 estudos, utilizando as bases de dados Web of Science, Scopus e SciELO, pesquisado pela última vez em janeiro de 2024. A RSL abordou questões centrais, métodos de pesquisa e sujeitos envolvidos e revelou uma riqueza de abordagens e perspectivas no campo da justiça climática. Os estudos examinados destacaram a interconexão entre questões sociais, ambientais e climáticas, enfatizando a necessidade de uma análise integrada para compreender verdadeiramente os desafios enfrentados. A variedade de métodos de pesquisa utilizados evidenciou a complexidade das dinâmicas envolvidas na busca por soluções equitativas. A pesquisa abrangeu uma gama diversificada de contextos, desde comunidades locais até iniciativas globais, refletindo a urgência e a amplitude das questões climáticas. Esta revisão enfrentou limitações, incluindo a impossibilidade de conduzir o processo colaborativo tradicional de uma revisão sistemática, a exclusão de literatura cinza devido a restrições de tempo e acesso, e a foco em metodologias quantitativas, revelando desafios na indexação de pesquisas qualitativas em bancos de dados eletrônicos. A principal fonte de financiamento para a revisão foram as próprias autoras. Este estudo oferece insights preliminares sobre o estado do conhecimento e quais metodologias qualitativas estão sendo utilizadas para pesquisar a justiça climática.

    IntroductionThe quality of municipal solid waste governance is a key public issue associated with environmental, social, and health concerns that still demands appropriate indicators to encompass different policy, management, and data availability settings worldwide. This study aimed to develop and apply a Municipal Solid Waste Governance Index (MSWGI) to support the monitoring and assessment of the ultimate factors that influence the performance of municipal solid waste (MSW) management in municipalities, incorporating particularities of Global South countries.MethodsThe development of the MSWGI comprised two approaches: (1) the establishment of a general theoretical framework with the identification of dimensions for monitoring MSW governance and (2) the development and application of the index using Brazil as a study case. The latter was accomplished through five incremental steps: (i) data selection and data quality analysis, (ii) data normalization and definition of data scores, (iii) data weighting and aggregation through statistical and participatory methods, (iv) data classification and, finally, (v) visualization of the index and its dimensions. Based on a broad literature review, three dimensions were proposed as the framework of the MSWGI: (i) regulatory quality (e.g., laws), (ii) voice and accountability (e.g., access to information; existence and functioning of the municipal council for the environment), and (iii) government effectiveness (e.g., financial and human resources; execution of government programs). A case study was then carried out with the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities to showcase the application and relevance of the MSWGI in a Global South context.ResultsDespite the high regulatory quality condition in Brazil, this was not reflected in the MSWGI. In general, most municipalities have high (31.4%) and very high (23.7%) regulatory quality, contrasting low voice and accountability (32.4%), and medium government effectiveness (27.8%), the latter associated with the low quality of public services performed in municipalities. The index was also negatively influenced by the precarious mechanisms and structure of social participation; high levels of informality in the recycling sector, and low completeness and consistency of databases. The MSWGI was associated with socioeconomic development, and its concept and dimensions captured the complexities associated with MSW management.DiscussionThe index, and the approach behind it, can be used as an objective tool to improve databases and the enabling conditions to foster MSW governance and management, while also creating indicators to assess its progress, facing the policy implementation gaps that are common to Global South countries. Also, rather than presenting an index to be directly transposed and applied to other locations, the steps of a strategy for generating an MSWGI from existing data were outlined. In this sense, this study creates mechanisms to refine these indicators within data-deficient context, presenting strategies that can be broadly applied.

    In addition to increasing requirements to adopt more circular economy approaches, Australian municipal waste management systems also face challenges due to the loss of capacity to export waste overseas. Accordingly, these systems will require effective sorting and collecting of waste. Selective Waste Collection (SWC) is the collecting and sorting of household recyclable waste. The study aimed at investigating how SWC systems in an Australian municipality (Wollongong) are organised and their role in the proper management of household plastic waste. For this purpose, we mapped the household plastic waste management system and characterised every SWC system in terms of, e.g., weight and type of plastic collected. We estimated that only about 20% of the household plastic waste generated in 2018–2019 was collected via the SWC systems. Our investigation enabled us to estimate Wollongong’s household plastic waste generation, recycling rate, and final disposal; identify the gaps in knowledge and challenges faced by the systems; and offer recommendations to overcome them. The challenges include contamination, insufficient community awareness, and lack of consistent waste data. Our recommendations include a transition from a commingled to a non-commingled system. The results provide a useful approach and crucial information for performance evaluation, strategy, and planning purposes.
