Determining the moisture diffusion coefficient during soaking and cooking of chickpeas Fladna Moura, Angela Figueiredo, Suélen M De Amorim, Joel G Teleken, Jhony T. Teleken Latin American Applied Research, 2025 This study aimed to apply a numerical/experimental approach to determine the moisture diffusion coefficient in chickpeas during the soaking and cooking processes, considering the seed swelling. The mathematical model combines Fick's second law to describe moisture transfer with the Peleg model to describe the expansion of the seed. It was solved numerically using finite differences method and fitted to experimental data of hydration kinetics at different temperature conditions (26, 40, 50, 63, 74, and 86 ºC). The numerical results showed that the D-values estimated considering deformable seeds were around 25-30 % greater than those estimated considering non-deformable seeds. This modeling approach could be useful in analyzing legumes' soaking and cooking process, but further studies are necessary to confirm its efficacy in different seed types and experimental conditions.
Heat and Mass Transfer in Shrimp Hot-Air Drying: Experimental Evaluation and Numerical Simulation Jhony T. Teleken, Suélen M. Amorim, Sarah S. S. Rodrigues, Thailla W. P. de Souza, João P. Ferreira, Bruno A. M. Carciofi Foods, 2025 Shrimp is one of the most popular and widely consumed seafood products worldwide. It is highly perishable due to its high moisture content. Thus, dehydration is commonly used to extend its shelf life, mostly via air drying, leading to a temperature increase, moisture removal, and matrix shrinkage. In this study, a mathematical model was developed to describe the changes in moisture and temperature distribution in shrimp during hot-air drying. The model considered the heat and mass transfer in an irregular-shaped computational domain and was solved using the finite element method. Convective heat and mass transfer coefficients (57.0–62.9 W/m2∙K and 0.007–0.008 m/s, respectively) and the moisture effective diffusion coefficient (6.5 × 10−10–8.5 × 10−10 m2/s) were determined experimentally and numerically. The shrimp temperature and moisture numerical solution were validated using a cabinet dryer with a forced air circulation at 60 and 70 °C. The model predictions demonstrated close agreement with the experimental data (R2≥ 0.95 for all conditions) and revealed three distinct drying stages: initial warming up, constant drying rate, and falling drying rate at the end. Initially, the shrimp temperature increased from 25 °C to around 46 °C and 53 °C for the process at 60 °C and 70 °C. Thus, it presented a constant drying rate, around 0.04 kg/kg min at 60 °C and 0.05 kg/kg min at 70 °C. During this stage, the process is controlled by the heat transferred from the surroundings. Subsequently, the internal resistance to mass transfer becomes the dominant factor, leading to a decrease in the drying rate and an increase in temperatures. A numerical analysis indicated that considering the irregular shape of the shrimp provides more realistic moisture and temperature profiles compared to the simplified finite cylinder geometry. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was performed using the validated model to assess the impact of the mass and heat transfer parameters and relative humidity inside the cavity on the drying process. The proposed model accurately described the drying, allowing the further evaluation of the quality and safety aspects and optimizing the process.

Synthesis and characterization of silica-based nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery Mariana Schneider, Karina Cesca, Suélen Maria de Amorim, Dachamir Hotza, Enrique Rodríguez-Castellón, Regina F.P.M. Moreira Journal of Materials Research and Technology, 2023 The use of nanofluids in enhanced oil recovery processes has gained attention due to the possibility to intensify oil recovery from mature oil fields. When nanofluids are injected into oil wells, different mechanisms are involved such as wettability alteration, reduction of interfacial surface tension, increase in the viscosity of the aqueous solution, and decrease in oil viscosity. Silica nanoparticles are extensively used for nanofluid formulations but there are important obstacles to the use of nanofluids in enhanced oil recovery. Stability is the most evident, in addition to environmental and economic aspects, and the need to design suitable large-scale production processes for nanoparticle synthesis with the required characteristics. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate oil recovery using silica-based nanofluids from various sources (natural rice husk ash, sol-gel synthesis, and commercial nanosilica) under different operational conditions. Silica nanoparticles were characterized by XRF, XRD, TEM, FTIR, specific surface area, and XPS. Nanofluids with different nanoparticles concentration were characterized by their viscosity, surface tension, zeta potential, and stability. Oil recovery from an oil-saturated sand-packed bed increased due to the nanofluid injection after secondary recovery. An additional 5–10% oil recovery is achieved after flooding due to the injection of nanofluids, proving that silica from rice husk ash has comparable efficiency to other synthetic silica nanoparticles that are used in enhanced oil recovery.
Investigation of the thermal behavior of Pinus wood pellets during torrefaction for application in metallurgical processes Jaqueline de Oliveira Brotto, Júlia da Silveira Salla, Jean Constantino Gomes da Silva, Enrique Rodríguez-Castellón, Humberto Jorge José, Suélen Maria de Amorim, Regina de Fátima Peralta Muniz Moreira Journal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022 The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal behavior of Pinus wood pellets during torrefaction under different operational conditions, as well as to evaluate the potential application of the torrefied product in metallurgical processes. Torrefaction tests were carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere (245 °C) and in an inert atmosphere (270 and 290 °C) at residence times of 15 and 60 min. The results of torrefaction in inert atmosphere were also statistically evaluated. To evaluate the potential application of torrefied biomass in metallurgical processes, reactivity tests with CO2 were performed in the temperature range of 200–1000 °C. The results showed that high torrefaction temperature and residence time decreased the mass yield. Statistical analysis showed the possibility of combining high temperatures with low residence times, or vice versa, to obtain satisfactory mass yields. The experimental results showed the highest reactivity for the torrefied biomass obtained in an inert atmosphere, at 290 °C and 60 min. However, considering the mass yield and reactivity with CO2, the best torrefaction conditions for biomass with potential application in metallurgical processes were in an inert atmosphere, at 290 °C and a residence time of 15 min.
Hydrophobic cellulose-based and non-woven fabrics coated with mesoporous TiO2 and their virucidal properties under indoor light Darliane CS Souza, Suélen M Amorim, Rafael D Cadamuro, Gislaine Fongaro, Rosely A Peralta, Rosane M Peralta, Gianluca Li Puma, Regina FPM Moreira Carbohydrate Polymer Technologies and Applications, 2022 Antiviral hydrophobic cellulose-based cotton or non-woven fabrics containing mesoporous TiO2 particles were developed for potential use in healthcare and in other contaminated environments. Hydrosols made with the sol-gel method using two different amounts of the Ti precursor were applied to cotton and non-woven fabrics and their virucidal effect on Murine Coronavirus (MHV-3) and Human Adenovirus (HAdV-5) was evaluated under indoor light irradiation. The results show 90% reduction of HAdV-5 and up to 99% of MHV-3 in non-woven fabric, and 90% reduction of MHV-3 and no reduction of HAdV-5 in cotton fabric. The antiviral activity was related to the properties of the TiO2 powders and coatings characterized by BET surface area, DRX, DLS, FTIR, DRS, SEM, TEM and water contact angle. The hydrophobic characteristic of the treated fabrics and the high surface area of the TiO2 particles favor interaction with the virus, especially MHV-3. These results demonstrate that non-woven fabric and cotton, coated with TiO2, can be highly effective in preventing contamination with MHV-3 and HAdV-5 viruses, particularly for applications in healthcare indoor environments.
Comparative detoxification of Remazol Rrilliant Blue R by free and immobilized laccase of Oudemansiella canarii Thaís Marques Uber, Ana Júlia dos Reis Buzzo, Gidiane Scaratti, Suélen Maria Amorim, Cristiane Vieira Helm, Giselle Maria Maciel, Rosely Aparecida Peralta, Regina de Fátima Peralta Muniz Moreira, Adelar Bracht, Rosane Marina Peralta Biocatalysis and Biotransformation, 2022 A laccase from Oudemansiella canarii was immobilized using the crosslinked enzyme aggregate (CLEA) methodology and applied in the degradation of the anthraquinonic dye Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR). The immobilized laccase was superior to the free laccase in both thermal and storage stabilities. Both immobilized and free laccase decolourized 100 mg/L RBBR within 24 h at 30 °C and pH 5.0, but the former was still efficient in degrading the dye after at least 6 cycles. The relationship between the decolorization rate and the RBBR concentration obeyed Michaelis–Menten kinetics, with KM of 0.126 ± 0.044 mmol/L and Vmax of 1.412 ± 0.295 µmol/min for free laccase and KM of 0.159 ± 0.050 mmol/L and Vmax of 1.214 ± 0.242 µmol/min for immobilized laccase. Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and mass spectrometry allowed to conclude that the O. canarii laccase acts not only on the chromophore group of the dye, but that it also cleaves other covalent bonds, causing an effective fragmentation of the molecule. The Microtox assay detected a significant diminution in toxicity, a finding corroborated by the phytotoxicity test performed with lettuce seeds. Our results indicate that the immobilized laccase from O. canarii could be useful in biological strategies aiming at degrading unwanted dyes in the environment.
