Study of load bearing capacity of jointed rockmass at variable joint angles Shrinarayan Yadav, Dharmendra Kumar Shukla Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers Transactions of the Chinese Institute of Engineers Series A, 2025 A jointed rock mass, despite its strong and stable behavior, has a minimal bearing strength in unconfined situations, frequently collapsing due to self-weight in some cases. In an uncontrolled environment, this study looked at jointed rock mass bearing capacity. The load-bearing capacity at edge and 150 mm of a sloping anisotropic rock mass in the plane strain condition was determined experimentally. The jointed rock mass is mounted with 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90° joint angles, as well as 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90° slope angles with horizontal, using sandstone with dimensions of 25 mm crosssection and 75 mm length. The level of stress at slope failure is influenced by several factors, including main axis joint orientation, joint frequency, strength and failure mode, unconfined compressive strength and rock mass elasticity modulus. The load bearing capacity on the rock mass slope is controlled by the joint angle and failure mechanisms such as buckling/sliding/rotation/toppling. The load bearing capacity at failure have been compared with calculated stress with an approach. A method is suggested to evaluate the load bearing capacity of unconfined rock mass.
