It is well known that cognitive radio (CR) techniques have great potential to deal with the problem of radio spectrum scarcity. Spectrum sensing technique plays a critical role in enabling unlicensed secondary users (SUs) to utilize spectrum holes in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). However, a licensed primary user (PU) can be appropriately protected by simultaneously performing spectrum sensing and data transmission i.e., by using full-duplex (FD) mode. In this paper, we have proposed and analyzed a strategy which includes spectrum sensing and spectrum access mechanisms both. We consider heterogeneous traffic of real-time and non real-time SUs based on their different delay tolerance characteristics. We address the issue of false alarm rate (FAR) associated with FD sensing. Spectrum handoff and call buffering strategies with <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$p$</tex-math><alternatives>p<inline-graphic xlink:href="rakhee-ieq2-3042836.gif"/></alternatives></inline-formula>-Retry policy are employed jointly so that SUs that would otherwise be blocked or forcibly dropped could be buffered and possibly served later. To evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy, five-dimensional continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) model is developed and the queueing-theoretic approach is utilized. Numerical results demonstrate the influence of spectrum sensing errors on the performance of such CRNs. Results also reveal that the provision of buffers under retrial policy increases the overall network resource utilization while decreasing blocking and dropping probabilities.

International Journal of Mathematics in Operational Research, 2021
The subscription of cellular networks is continuing to experience a growth at an unprecedented rate. It becomes a significant challenge for the cellular service provider to accommodate huge traffic demands while satisfying the desired quality of service (QoS) level perceived by the users. This paper proposes a new call admission control (CAC) scheme based on the quality of signals to support the guarantees of QoS. The proposed scheme also provides an algorithm to determine the optimal value of acceptance probability of new calls under the fractional guard channel (FGC) scheme which minimises the new call blocking probability. Moreover, there is a provision of finite buffer for handoff calls to further enhance the QoS of handoff users. Also, the paper includes numerical results to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Overall, this work provides an effective CAC model for optimising the performance of cellular networks.
  • Analysis of m/m/c retrial queue with thresholds, p h distribution of retrial times and unreliable servers
    S. Chakravarthy, Serife Ozkar, Shruti
Journal of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, 2021
This paper treats a retrial queue with phase type retrial times and a threshold type-policy, where each server is subject to breakdowns and repairs. Upon a server failure, the customer whose service gets interrupted will be handed over to another available server, if any; otherwise, the customer may opt to join the retrial orbit or depart from the system according to a Bernoulli trial. We analyze such a multi-server retrial queue using the recently introduced threshold-based retrial times for orbiting customers. Applying the matrix-analytic method, we carry out the steady-state analysis and report a few illustrative numerical examples.

    Operations Research Perspectives, 2020
Queueing models wherein having a backup server during the absences (caused by vacations and breakdowns) of the main server have found many applications in practice. Such services offered by a backup server can be viewed as the (main) server working during a vacation or during a breakdown period. A backup server offering services can be thought of as the main server working (at a reduced rate) on vacations/repairs. Using Neuts’ versatile point process for the arrivals and modeling the service times with phase type distributions, we propose a model that generalizes some of the previously published ones on working-vacation-breakdown-repair queues. We carry out the steady-state analysis and report interesting illustrative numerical examples. We also prove decomposition results for the rate matrix and the mean number in the system under some special cases.
