I hold a PhD (2013) and an MSc (2008) in Ecology of Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems from the University of São Paulo, and a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie (2000). I am currently a visiting professor at the Federal University of Alfenas (ICT – Poços de Caldas). Previously, I was a visiting professor at the Graduate Program in Ecology and Natural Resource Management at the Federal University of Acre (2019–2021) and a substitute professor in the Ecology program at UNESP, Rio Claro Campus (2021–2022). I completed postdoctoral fellowships at São Paulo State University – ICT Sorocaba, in Environmental Sciences (2013–2018 and 2022–2023) and in Chemical, Physical, and Geological Oceanography at the Oceanographic Institute, University of São Paulo (2019–2024, fellowship in 2022).

Ecological Changes in Two Interconnected Subtropical Reservoirs and Their Implications for Ecosystem Services: A Paleolimnological Approach Sheila Cardoso-Silva, Paulo Alves de Lima Ferreira, Diego de Souza Sardinha, Mariana dos Santos Pelegrini, Olga Krammer, et al. Water Air and Soil Pollution, 2026 Paleolimnological studies provide valuable long-term records of environmental changes, crucial for assessing ecosystem services (ES) and understanding how aquatic ecosystems respond to various pressures. This study employs an integrated approach, combining paleolimnological, monitoring, and socioeconomic data to investigate changes in two interconnected reservoirs. Geochemical measurements related to eutrophication and metal contamination, along with monitoring data and official statistics, were used to identify the main drivers influencing the ES in these reservoirs. A stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis defined the primary paleoenvironmental zones. Standardized aggregated values for each ES were calculated. Redundancy Analysis was applied to investigate potential external drivers of these temporal changes, using demographic and economic data. The sediment profile revealed that significant changes were linked to eutrophication, characterized by increased nutrient levels, higher phytoplankton biomass (Chlorophyll-a and Pheophytin), and dominance of carotenoid pigments from Chlorophyceae and Cyanobacteria. Eutrophication intensified between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, leading to notable changes in ES by 2022, especially in support and regulation services. Although metal distribution did not adversely affect biological communities, it indicated increased anthropogenic activity. Provisioning services also faced challenges due to reduced reservoir flows, exacerbated by low precipitation and population growth. The impacts were more severe in the Jaguari than in the Jacareí reservoir, attributed to different land-use patterns. To mitigate these ES trade-offs, where enhancing one service diminishes another, investments in infrastructure and strategies to control diffuse pollution. Recommendations include land-use planning, wetland restoration, reforestation, and recovery of riparian vegetation to improve water security and address extreme drought effects.

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia, 2025 Aim This study aims morphometric analysis and water quality assessment in the Retiro Baixo Reservoir, located in the mouth of Paraopeba River. Methods Morphometric parameters were investigated based on the governmental agencies, field works and geoprocessing software. Ninety water samples were collected in three points at three different depths between 02/2019 and 08/2022. Results The involvement factor (If) showed that the reservoir dilution capacity may be small compared to the large basin drainage area. During higher inflow periods, there was an increase in the total suspended sediment (TSS), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nitrate (NO3-) and phosphate (PO43-) concentrations. The results also showed vertical variation in temperature and dissolved oxygen values, with the highest copper (Cu) concentrations measured at the deeper depths. In fact, 60% of the Cu values samples exceeded the limit established by Brazilian legislation, while most of the Fe and Mn samples analysed had low concentrations (91.1% Mn and 66.6% Fe), with a few exceptions. Conclusions This concentration is also strongly influenced by hydrodynamic seasonality and geochemical background.
