Processing and characterization of in-situ intermetallic and ceramic particles reinforced magnesium matrix composites D. Shivalingappa, Harish, R.Suresh Kumar, N. Raghavendra, K. Shekar, M.K. Venkatesh, C.Durga Prasad, B.P. Dileep, B.S. Smitha, Subramanya R. Prabhu Journal of Alloys and Metallurgical Systems, 2026 The present study aims to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium matrix composites reinforced with in-situ formed Al₃Ti intermetallic and Al 2 O 3 ceramic particles. A novel two-step stir casting technique is used to fabricate a magnesium composite by dissolving a pre-prepared aluminium composite into a magnesium melt. XRD, optical microscopy, and FE-SEM with EDS are used to analyze the in situ-formed particles in the composite. Al 3 Ti, Al 2 O 3 , and other ceramic particles are identified in the composite. Al 3 Ti particles are needle-like, and Al 2 O 3 particles are nearly spherical. Improved hardness but reduced tensile properties are observed in the magnesium composite compared to the cast Mg-9 wt% Al matrix alloy. Fractographic analysis of tensile-tested specimens reveals a mixed-mode failure, predominantly brittle with minor ductile fracture.
Experimental investigation of a sustainable natural convection solar air dryer with an internally ringed finned tube Ramesh Chandra Nayak, Mahesh Vasantrao Kulkarni, Vishwa Mohan Behera, Prashant Narayan Shende, Shekar K Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy, 2026 The purpose of this study is to design, fabricate, and experimentally evaluate a sustainable natural convection solar air heating system suitable for passive drying and heating applications without the use of auxiliary power sources. A natural convection solar air heater was developed using a rectangular wooden enclosure integrated with a circular tube fitted with internally placed triangular cross section rings to enhance heat transfer and air mixing. A thin aluminum plate supporting a black coated V shaped absorber was positioned above the tube to effectively capture solar radiation. A transparent glass cover was used to minimize convective and radiative heat losses. Experiments were conducted under inlet air temperatures of 28–32°C and solar radiation intensities ranging from 610 to 950 W/m 2 . Key parameters such as tube surface temperature, outlet air temperature, buoyancy driven mass flow rate, and instantaneous thermal efficiency were evaluated. The results show that the internally ringed finned tube significantly enhances convective heat transfer compared to a smooth tube due to improved turbulence and secondary flow formation. The natural convection mass flow rate increased by approximately 25–30%, while the maximum temperature rise between inlet and outlet air ranged from 18 to 22°C under peak solar radiation. A maximum instantaneous thermal efficiency of about 46% was achieved at peak solar irradiance of 950 W/m 2 .
Environmental Feasibility of PV Assisted Intermittent Crop Dryer Shekar K, Prasad B Rampure, P.P. Revenkar, Naveen Ganesh 2nd IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing and Electrical Circuits and Electronics Icdcece 2023, 2023 In the current investigation, an environmental and economic analysis for a solar photovoltaic assisted drying system was carried out. As part of this analysis, various intermittent drying ratios were taken into consideration. The environmental viability of the project was evaluated by calculating the emission net mitigation of CO<inf>2</inf> and the amount of carbon credits earned annually through the energy yield of the system. An evaluation of the energy efficiency of a PV assisted dryer system was carried out for the city of Ballari in India. The findings demonstrated that the greatest CO<inf>2</inf> abatement occurred during continuous drying at a slope of 30°, whereas intermittent drying at a ratio of 0.75 resulted in the lowest recorded levels of energy consumption.

Performance studies on solar photovoltaic thermal system for crop drying Mahesh B. Gorawar, P.P. Revankar, Vijay Tambarallimath, K. Shekar Advanced Materials Research, 2013 The growing population demands adequate supply of food grains for its sustenance and supporting life activities. The agricultural produce in India has increased over the years due to improved farm practices despite of which the country is ranked 2nd in terms of the number of children suffering malnutrition. It is reported that the child mortality rate in the country due to hunger and sanitation is above 1,000 per day. The post harvest losses in India are estimated at 4 to 6 percent for food grains and 16 to 18 percent for fruits and vegetables occurring at various stages of harvesting, storage and processing. The post harvest remedies for the loss of food grains and other agricultural produce includes better post harvest storage techniques based on removal of moisture to store the produce without being perished. The crop drying techniques based on use of renewable energy offer succor to save the large agricultural produce that goes to drains without being consumed. The reported work deals with design of a solar crop dryer for drying based on solar Photovoltaic/ Thermal (SPV/T) techniqueKeywordsPost harvest losses, solar crop drying, solar PV/T systems, drying rate
