  • Using LLM for Learning Objects Metadata Extraction on Educational Robotics Content
Gabriel Batistuta Urbano Lopes, Ryllari Raianne Marques De Santana Costa, Sebastião Emidio Alves Filho
27th Brazilian Symposium on Robotics and 26th Workshop on Robotics in Education Sbr Wre 2025, 2025
RepositORE is a collaborative web platform for registering learning objects and educational robotics activities. Manually adding new objects - with their 32 metadata fields each - quickly becomes a tedious and discouraging process for users. This complexity discourages educators and developers from incorporating new resources and maintaining the repository up-to-date. Automating the extraction and completion of metadata would reduce errors, save time, and encourage sharing new content, thereby strengthening the robotics education ecosys-tem. Large Language Models (LLMs), pre-trained on vast text corpora, are capable of understanding the nuances of human language and generating contextualized responses. Owing to their prior training across diverse domains, they can handle questions and commands on a wide variety of subjects, thereby enhancing educational applications and efficiently automating complex tasks. This article presents a methodology for automatically evaluating and capturing educational robotics content from text content. This methodology employs Prompt Engineering (PE) to guide the LLMs in locating and extracting from heterogeneous sources, improving the precision and consistency of the outputs. The developed subsystem, RobotFinder v3, extracts metadata from web sites that contain relevant material and incorporates it into RepositORE. It was also applied to extract robotics-specific metadata through the analysis of YouTube video subtitles using LLMs. For this purpose, we employed the Llama 3.1, DeepSeek R-l, and Gemma 3 models for relevance assessment and data extraction. In our experiments, Llama 3.1 and Gemma 3 demonstrated superior performance in this highly specialized context.

27th Brazilian Symposium on Robotics and 26th Workshop on Robotics in Education Sbr Wre 2025, 2025
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often face significant challenges in verbal communication and social interaction, impacting their educational inclusion. This project paper outlines a proposed intervention to address these challenges by integrating social robotics with an adapted Picture Exchange Communication System. We propose the use of the NAO V6 humanoid robot as a mediator for a PECS-Adapted system, wherein children utilize visual cards featuring QR codes to express actions, desires, and feelings. The robot is designed to recognize these QR codes, verbalize the corresponding message, and provide interactive feedback. This research, grounded in the Design Science Research framework, will involve a qualitative, exploratory study with five children with ASD, aged 5–10 years, over a two-month period. The intervention aims to enhance expressive communication, increase communicative spontaneity, and facilitate social interaction, ultimately promoting more effective school inclusion. This paper details the system architecture, proposed methodology, and expected contributions of this novel approach within the Brazilian educational context.

Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems Theory and Applications, 2024
Educational Robotics has emerged as a multidisciplinary field integrating Information and Communication Technologies, Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence areas in education. Furthermore, Educational Robotics offers an innovative approach to teaching and learning by incorporating the construction and programming of robots. However, the small number of platforms for sharing Educational Robotics Learning Objects with a large amount of well-described metadata poses a challenge for efficient search and retrieval of relevant educational content. This study presents an architecture for data processing and ingestion in the RepositORE system, a Learning Objects Repository for Educational Robotics that stores educational content and associated metadata based on the Dublin Core standard. Based on microservices architecture, the proposed system aims to facilitate the location and reuse of learning objects by adapting the RepositORE system to work as a client service. The theoretical framework explores the concepts of learning objects, repositories, and the significance of Educational Robotics in education, and reviews related works. The proposed architecture and system can potentially enhance the accessibility and discoverability of Educational Robotics Learning Objects, fostering effective teaching and learning experiences.
  • Robot Finder v2: Search and Ingestion of Educational Robotics Data from Youtube
Gabriel Batistuta Urbano Lopes, Ryllari Raianne Marques de Santana Costa, Sebastião Emidio Alves Filho
2024 Brazilian Symposium on Robotics and 2024 Workshop on Robotics in Education Sbr Wre 2024, 2024
Educational Robotics offers an interactive learning approach where students can turn abstract theories into concrete projects. With the exponential growth in content creation on internet platforms, finding specific, high-quality learning objects about robotics in education can be challenging. Platforms like YouTube, for example, have a vast collection of educational videos that cover various topics related to educational robotics. However, they are scattered among a massive amount of available data, making it difficult to have more assertive searches and identify the best resources. This work aims to present Robot Finder v2, a software that uses an automated approach to feed RepositORE, a repository of Learning Objects in Educational Robotics. The Robot Finder v2 searches and stores data from YouTube videos to make the search for this content simpler and more effective. The collected data feeds the RepostiORE, where these objects can be adapted and researched by users looking to acquire skills in educational robotics. For the objects to be found accurately, the software uses the YouTube Data API v3, which has a set of metadata in addition to the descriptions of the videos provided by their creators. The processing done in the Robot Finder optimizes the search and registration of information by mapping API endpoints and seeking correlations of metadata between RepositORE objects and YouTube videos.
  • Robot Finder: a learning object data search and ingestion system for Educational Robotics
Gabriel Batistuta Urbano Lopes, Sebastião Emidio Alves Filho
Proceedings 2023 Latin American Robotics Symposium 2023 Brazilian Symposium on Robotics and 2023 Workshop of Robotics in Education LARS Sbr Wre 2023, 2023
Educational robotics awakens students’ interest and curiosity in the world of technology and innovation. By exploring concepts in programming, electronics, and mechanics, students are introduced to subject areas allowing students of all ages to develop science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills. However, getting information on this topic has become difficult since, with the growth of internet content production, learning objects have become constantly dispersed. Thus, the present work has the general objective of presenting the strategy used to search and ingest data from learning objects in an automated way in RepositORE, a repository where these objects of Education and robotics can be stored and searched by users who need to acquire certain skills. For the objects of Educational Robotics to be found more quickly and accurately, the software uses data extraction techniques to search for data from the learning objects on the web. Robot Finder optimizes the search and recording of information from internet object data so that it can be accessed by RepositORE.
  • LEWis: Methodology and Platform for Monitoring the Level of Eutrophication on Water Bodies
José Eric F. Costa, Marcelino Pereira S. Silva, Sebastião Emídio A. Filho
International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS, 2023
Water is one of the most important resources for human life, which is essential for all ecosystems. Eutrophication is the process of nutrients accumulation in the water body, which leads to the flowering of cyanobacteria, changing the dynamics of the environment, making it increasingly inhospitable and causing the death of several species of animals and plants, generating social, financial, and environmental impacts. In order to monitor the state of water bodies, in the traditional method (in situ) analyses are performed on collected samples of the water. The remote sensing approach has the advantage of enabling faster and more dynamic means to obtain information. This research aims to investigate and monitor the eutrophication process, through the development of a methodology and computational solution that identifies the level of eutrophication on water bodies, quickly and semi-automatically, through the use of satellite image mining to detect cyanobacteria.
  • The Influence of Well-Dressed NPCs on Player Perception, Immersion and Decision-Making in Gaming
Raul B. Paradeda, Georgy Freitas, Sebastião E. Alves Filho, Anderson Abner Souza
IEEE Conference on Computatonal Intelligence and Games Cig, 2023
This empirical study involved volunteers who played a game featuring NPCs specially developed for the research. The research investigated the influence and behaviour of NPC appearance on some factors regarding the players. Results suggest that NPC appearance can significantly affect the player’s emotions, immersion, perception, and decision-making. Poorly dressed NPCs negatively influenced the player’s emotional state, while well-dressed NPCs generated higher trustworthiness and positively influenced the player’s decision-making. This study may help develop more efficient strategies for creating characters that influence the player’s decision-making in video games and encourage the development of new research in the field of human-agent interaction and game development.

Vinícius Nunes Barbosa, Francisco Mendes Mendes Neto, Sebastiao Alves Filho, Lenardo Silva
ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, 2022
Context: The increase in the proliferation of fake news on the Internet has significantly impacted the quality and veracity of information received by society. Problem: The malicious use of information can compromise democracy by manipulating people’s opinions. In addition, there are few facilitating mechanisms that classify and help the citizen to know whether a certain news propagated is true or not. This problem has driven new research directions in an attempt to classify and identify these news. Methodology: This work in its methodology performs a comparison of algorithms to serve as an intelligent solution in the detection of fake news in Portuguese. About 12,000 news featured the dataset used for this analysis. Pre-processing techniques were used to analyze the patterns of these news, as well as to reduce noise and eliminate null information. The algorithms used for comparison were Logistic Regression, Stochastic Gradient Descent, Support Vector Machine and Multilayer Perceptron. Result: The results obtained showed that the models generated by the four algorithms obtained an accuracy greater than 90%. To choose the best algorithm, metrics such as precision, recall and f-measure were used for each of the models. The SVM algorithm had the best performance, with 96.39% accuracy. Contribution: In addition to the analytical results presented, this work brought as contributions the availability of a database containing news in Portuguese and an analysis, from the text of the news, both grammatical and structural, in order to detect the existing patterns between true and false.
  • RepositORE: A Learning Objects Repository for Educational Robotics
Kefton David Nunes De Melo, Cleyton Carlos Santos Costa, Thalia Katiane Sampaio Gurgel, Sebastiao Emidio Alves Filho
2022 19th Latin American Robotics Symposium 2022 14th Brazilian Symposium on Robotics and 2022 13th Workshop on Robotics in Education LARS Sbr Wre 2022, 2022
Education is a motivating area for the use of technologies because the learning process can become more dynamic and interesting. Among the technological resources used in education, Educational Robotics stands out by enabling the development of technological projects that can involve techniques of construction and manipulation of robots and enable the development of the creative process, logical reasoning, and interdisciplinarity. However, acquiring knowledge in this area can be a complex task since the learning objects are spread due to the increase in content production brought by the massive use of the Internet. Thus, the present work has as a general objective present RepositORE, a repository where these objects of Educational Robotics can be stored and searched by users who need to acquire specific abilities. For Educational Robotics objects to be found faster and achieve their technical and pedagogical goals, the system uses metadata for the correct description of stored objects based on the Dublin Core Metadata standard. To improve and simplify the search for objects, an adaptation and extension of the Dublin Core standard was made to represent the specific information for Educational Robotics. RepositORE allows users to insert new content and collaborate through complementing information from objects registered by other users.
  • Green Robotics: Concepts, challenges, and strategies
Sebastiao Emidio Alves Filho, Aquiles Medeiros Filgueira Burlamaqui, Rafael Vidal Aroca, Luiz Marcos Garcia Gonçalves, Sarah Thomaz de Lima Sa
    IEEE Latin America Transactions, 2018
Green initiatives aim to transform products and processes in order to become friendlier with the environment protection. These concepts are well spread in areas as Chain Supply Management and Computing with several researches worldwide about them. However in the area of Robotics this relevant theme has not being well addressed, with some sporadic and isolated works. Actually, to date, we noticed in the literature the lack of concepts and investigations specifically directed to Green Robotics. Towards this direction, overcome these challenges, this work proposes a formalism on how this concept should be treated in Robotics coming up with an approach in order to allow the adoption of a methodology that can be followed, starting with robot construction and programming until the execution of tasks, all respecting environmental concerns. We show the relationship between concepts that are common in Green Supply Chains, Green Computing, and Green Robotics. Besides, we put examples of strategies that are often used to allow sustainability in Robotics and the types of metrics that can be used to verify them. Finally, math formalism for Green Robotics is introduced, in which the several related issues are approached as a multicriteria optimization problem. The applicability is exemplified through an activity scenario of Educational Robotics.
