Fretting wear mechanism of plasma-sprayed CNT-reinforced wollastonite-zirconia composite coatings for bioimplant applications Avneesh Kumar, Sumitkumar Rathor, Saminderpreet Singh, Ravi Kant, Harpreet Singh, Marek Vostrak, Sarka Houdkova Tribology International, 2026 This study investigates the fretting wear mechanisms of plasma-sprayed wollastonite-zirconia (CaSiO 3 -ZrO 2 , WaZr) composite coatings, both unreinforced and reinforced with carbon nanotubes (WaZr-CNT), for bioimplant applications. The developed coatings are compared with conventional hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on titanium substrates. Microstructural analysis reveals that CNT reinforcement leads to a denser, more uniformly bonded WaZr-CNT coating through effective splat bridging and pore sealing. Mechanical characterization shows that WaZr-CNT coatings possess higher microhardness and lower elastic modulus than unreinforced WaZr coating. During fretting tests at a 200 µm displacement amplitude, the WaZr-CNT coating exhibited an approximately 83 % reduction in energy dissipation compared to HA coatings and a 75 % reduction compared to WaZr coatings, indicating significant improvement in fretting resistance. While HA and WaZr coatings underwent splat fracture and generated considerable amount of wear debris, the WaZr-CNT coating produced almost no debris and maintained intact splat boundaries. The novelty of this work lies in the development and evaluation of CNT-reinforced WaZr coatings that for the first time undergo fretting tests and demonstrate superior fretting wear resistance under cyclic sliding contact compared to unreinforced WaZr and conventional HA coatings.
Mechanistic insights into the corrosion of heat-treated wollastonite-zirconia coatings reinforced with carbon nanotubes Avneesh Kumar, Sumitkumar Rathor, Saminderpreet Singh, Ravi Kant, Harpreet Singh, Marek Vostrak, Sarka Houdkova Ceramics International, 2026 This research work investigates the corrosion behavior of as-deposited and heat-treated wollastonite-zirconia (WaZr) composite coatings, including those enhanced with carbon nanotubes (WaZr-CNT), and compares these against established hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings. The investigated coatings were deposited on titanium substrates using plasma spraying method. Microstructural investigations reveal that the addition of CNTs results in a denser and more uniformly bonded WaZr-CNT coating. Moreover, the coatings became denser after heat treatment due to effective melting of splats. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicates that HA coatings maintain superior performance under EIS tests. Nevertheless, potentiodynamic polarization tests show that the WaZr coatings achieve a substantial decrease, approximately 80%, in corrosion current density and about 70% in corrosion potential relative to HA coatings. The reinforcement with CNTs, however, leads to an increase in corrosion current density and a shift towards more negative corrosion potentials. Heat treatment of these coatings resulted in inferior performance despite better microstructure. To elucidate the underlying corrosion mechanisms, SEM, XPS, and XRD analyses were employed. A novel aspect of this study is the first-time application of electrochemical corrosion testing on CNT-reinforced WaZr coatings with and without heat treatment, revealing effect of CNT addition and heat treatment on corrosion resistance.
