A new segmentation method for non-ideal iris images using morphological reconstruction FCM based on improved DSA Satish Rapaka, P. Rajesh Kumar, Miranji Katta, K. Lakshminarayana, N. Bhupesh Kumar SN Applied Sciences, 2021 In any accurate iris recognition system segmentation of iris plays a vital role. The noise, specular reflections, eyelid/eyelash obstruction, and intensity inhomogeneities in an image make the segmentation more difficult. In this paper, a novel technique is proposed to segment the iris from images that are taken under uncooperative image conditions. The proposed method segments the image in two stages. Firstly, Morphological reconstruction fuzzy c-means clustering (MRFCM) based on an improved differential search algorithm is implemented before the segmentation step. The MRFCM can preserve image contours even in the presence of noise. Secondly, the iris is isolated from the undesired regions of an eye image by implementing geodesic active contours driven by a modified stopping criterion on the resultant images of the pre-segmentation step. The accuracy of the method presented has been tested on the databases such as CASIAv3-Interval, UBIRISv1, MMU1, IITDv1, and MICHE-I. The segmentation accuracy has been demonstrated and compared with other existing methods present in the literature. The obtained results are promising and the proposed model is outperformed the existing methods.
Efficient method for segmentation of noisy and non-circular iris images using improved particle swarm optimisation-based MRFCM Rapaka Satish, P. Rajesh Kumar Iet Biometrics, 2020 Segmentation of the iris is a crucial stage in an automated iris-based recognition system. The performance of any biometric system primarily relies on how effectively the iris is extracted from the unwanted parts of an iris image. The process of iris segmentation is mainly affected by the noise artefacts such as eyelid/eyelashes occlusions, specular reflections, intensity inhomogeneities, and non-circularity of the iris boundary. A novel and an efficient method has been proposed in this work to segment noisy and non-circular iris boundaries. The mathematical modelling of morphological reconstruct fuzzy C-means clustering (MRFCM) has been presented. The MRFCM based on improved particle swarm optimisation has been implemented before the segmentation in the recognition framework. The resultant images are then segmented by employing geodesic active contours incorporated by a new stopping function. The effect of the proposed segmentation method on iris recognition is observed through matching score distribution. The popular and publicly available datasets such as UBIRISv1, CASIA-v3-Interval, MMU1, and Mobile Iris Challenge Evaluation databases are considered for the evaluation of the proposed method. Recognition accuracy is validated and compared with the well-existing methods.
A Preliminary Review on Novel Coronavirus Disease: COVID-19 Miranji Katta, Satish Rapaka, Ramkumar Adireddi, Jagadeeshwara Rao Emandi Coronaviruses, 2020 Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large group of viruses that can cause health disorders ranging from the usual cold to most severe diseases like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). These viruses are generally found among animals. In atypical circumstances, these viruses can propagate to humans from animals. The spikes protruding from the membrane of the virus look like the sun's corona, hence the name ‘coronavirus’ has been given. Coronaviruses (CoV) belong to the species of Corona with a high mutation rate than the Coronaviridae. The objective of this review article was to investigate good strategies of treatment and preliminary analysis concerning the disease, and prevention in the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak.
An efficient method for segmentation of noisy and non-circular iris images using optimal multilevel thresholding Journal of Advanced Research in Dynamical and Control Systems, 2019
Efficient approach for non-ideal iris segmentation using improved particle swarm optimisation-based multilevel thresholding and geodesic active contours Satish Rapaka, Pullakura Rajesh Kumar Iet Image Processing, 2018 Segmentation is an important step in iris recognition framework because the accuracy of the iris recognition system is affected by the segmentation of the iris. The image acquisition introduces noise artefacts such as specular reflections, eyelids/eyelashes occlusions and overlapping intensities, which makes the segmentation process difficult. An efficient method has been proposed for the segmentation of iris images that deal with non-circular iris boundaries and other noise artefacts mentioned above. The proposed method uses the Otsu multilevel thresholding based on improved particle swarm optimisation technique as a pre-segmentation step. Pre-segmentation step delimits the iris region from the other parts of an eye image. The geodesic active contours incorporated with a novel stopping function is then used to segment non-circular iris boundaries. The recognition accuracy of the proposed method is verified using the standard databases, CASIA v3 Interval and UBIRISv1. Obtained results have been compared with existing methods and have an encouraging performance.
Towards segmentation of non-ideal iris images using optimization based multilevel thresholding Satish Rapaka, Rajesh Kumar Pullakura Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Communication and Electronics Systems Icces 2018, 2018 Segmentation/localization of iris from an image is a vital process in an iris authentication system because it affects the authentication accuracy. Segmenting iris images captured under uncooperative conditions is an even more difficult task because of the noise artifacts like occlusions, overlapping intensities, and specular reflections. In this work, a pre-segmentation step using PSO and DS algorithm based multilevel Otsu thresholding has been proposed to improve the segmentation accuracy. The pre-segmentation process isolates the iris from unwanted regions of the image. The resultant images of a pre-segmentation step are then segmented by employing geodesic active contours (GAC) incorporated by a novel stopping function. The proposed method accuracy is evaluated by considering standard databases such as CASIA v3 Interval, UBIRISv1, and MMU1.
