Reference Plasma Proteome Map of Crotalus durissus terrificus Isabela Tokuhara Makida, Amanda Almeida Resende, Letícia Gomes de Pontes, Laudicéia Alves de Oliveira, Leonardo Melo, Francilene Capel Tavares de Carvalho, Ivânio Teixeira Borba-Junior, Regina Kiomi Takahira, Rui Seabra Ferreira Junior, Lucilene Delazari dos Santos Analytical Biochemistry, 2026 Snakebite envenoming remains a major public health concern worldwide, while the maintenance of captive snakes is essential for conservation, venom production, and biomedical research. However, little is known about the plasma proteome of snakes, a gap that limits physiological assessments and the development of species-specific reference protein profile. This study aimed to characterize the plasma proteome of healthy adult Crotalus durissus terrificus snakes to establish a molecular baseline that supports biological evaluation and future diagnostic research. Blood samples were collected from 19 specimens kept in capitivity, followed by hematological, biochemical, and proteomic analyses. Hematology confirmed preserved cell morphology and values within established reptilian reference ranges, indicating good health status. Biochemical analyses showed albumin, total protein, and aspartate aminotransferase levels consistent with previous reports, while uric acid values were comparatively lower, reflecting reptilian renal physiology. Proteomic profiling using 2D electrophoresis and LC-MS/MS identified 301 protein spots, of which 273 were successfully annotated, covering approximately 90% of the detectable plasma proteome. Functional classification revealed proteins associated with immune function, transport, metabolism, and anti-hemorrhagic activity. The plasma proteomic baseline generated here contributes to the understanding of snake systemic physiology and provides foundational data to support future diagnostic, veterinary and biotechnological investigations, with direct benefits for animal welfare, biosafety, and reproducibility in venom-based biotechnological applications.
Investigation of the Intensity of Thrombocytosis as a Potential Prognostic Indicator in Canine Malignant Neoplasms Letícia Gondim Souto, Fwu Shing Teng, Susana Eduardo Vieira, Regina Kiomi Takahira Veterinary Medicine International, 2026 Platelets contribute to cancer progression, and thrombocytosis is a recognized poor prognostic factor in human oncology; however, its significance in veterinary medicine remains underexplored. We retrospectively analyzed 166 dogs diagnosed with neoplasia and thrombocytosis (platelet count ≥ 430,000/μL) to assess the relationship between thrombocytosis intensity and survival. Survival analyses revealed that compared with dogs with mild thrombocytosis, those with moderate‐to‐severe thrombocytosis had significantly shorter survival times. With respect to specific diagnoses, dogs with mammary carcinoma and moderate‐to‐severe thrombocytosis had a significantly higher risk of death (HR = 3.4; p = 0.02). A similar trend was observed in patients with mast cell tumors, where the risk of death was 7.39 times higher, although this finding reached only borderline statistical significance ( p = 0.05). Further prospective studies with larger cohorts are warranted to validate thrombocytosis as a prognostic biomarker and to elucidate its role in tumor biology and clinical outcomes in veterinary oncology.
Assessment of Renal Function and Bilirubin Measurement in Urine as Prognostic Value in Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in Dogs IVANIO T. BORBA-JUNIOR, ROBERTA M. BASSO, TATIANA G. GORENSTEIN, NAYARA LIMONTA, BRUNA DOS SANTOS, MARCOS M. RAMOS, REGINA K. TAKAHIRA Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2026 Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the leading cause of hemolytic anemia in dogs. Although renal injury has been reported in IMHA patients, laboratory findings defining the type and extent of renal damage remain inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate key laboratory findings in the assessment of renal function in dogs with a suspected diagnosis of IMHA and to correlate these findings with disease prognosis. A prospective study was conducted on 21 dogs treated at a veterinary hospital with a suspected diagnosis of IMHA. Blood samples were collected for complete blood count and biochemical analyses, and urinalysis was performed. Significant alterations in renal function were observed in IMHA patients. The urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPC) was elevated compared to controls (P < 0.0002) and correlated with the degree of anemia (R = -0.638) and the inflammatory status, assessed by white blood cell count (R = 0.550). In addition, urinary bilirubin levels were increased in IMHA patients (P < 0.0001), suggesting that bilirubin is an important prognostic marker of the disease. Renal function is impaired in IMHA patients, and urinary bilirubin levels serve as a valuable prognostic indicator.
Evaluation of intermittent hemodialysis therapy in the bypass mode in dogs with chronic kidney disease in uremic crisis Maria Gabriela Picelli de Azevedo, Suellen Rodrigues Maia, Reiner Silveira de Moraes, Silvano Salgueiro Geraldes, Henry David Mogollón García, Alessandra Melchert, Regina Kiomi Takahira, Adriano Sakai Okamoto, Raphael Lucio Andreatti Filho, Priscylla Tatiana Chalfun Guimarães-Okamoto BMC Veterinary Research, 2025 BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the safety of intermittent hemodialysis via the bypass mode in dogs with chronic kidney disease during uremic crisis. RESULTS: Fourteen dogs with chronic kidney disease in uremic crisis were selected. The dogs were allocated into two experimental groups: intermittent hemodialysis without bypass mode (IHD group without bypass) and intermittent hemodialysis with bypass mode (IHD group with bypass). Data were collected during the first dialysis session at 10 min pre-session (M0), 30 min (M1), 60 min (M2), 120 min (M3), 180 min (M4), and 240 min (M5) after the session began and 10 min post-session (M6). An increase in rectal temperature was observed at certain moments in both groups. The hemogram revealed a decrease in red blood cells, total protein, and platelets in both groups, whereas hemoglobin and hematocrit decreased at M6 only in the IHD group with bypass. Urea, creatinine, and phosphorus were reduced at M6 in both groups. An increase in blood pH, sodium bicarbonate, and excess base at M6 (10 min post-session) was observed in both groups. The IHD group with bypass exhibited a significantly lower body weight. No significant differences were observed in session time or final URR between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study support the hypothesis that IHD with the bypass mode is safe and effective in CKD dogs with uremic crisis. This approach minimizes complications such as dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS) while not causing hemodynamic or laboratory impairments under the executed conditions.
Comparative Effects of Aminophylline, Caffeine, and Doxapram in Hypoxic Neonatal Dogs Born by Cesarean Section Júlia Cosenza Mendonça, Keylla Helena Nobre Pacífico Pereira, Gleice Mendes Xavier, Kárita da Mata Fuchs, Thaís Gomes Faustino, Viviane Maria Codognoto, Miriam Harumi Tsunemi, Regina Kiomi Takahira, Maricy Apparício, Maria Lucia Gomes Lourenço Animals, 2025 Background: Perinatal hypoxia is a leading cause of early mortality in canine neonates and accounts for over 90% of early deaths in canine neonates. Respiratory depression may result from dystocia, prolonged labor, or anesthetic protocols used during cesarean delivery, requiring rapid pharmacological support. This study evaluated the effects of aminophylline, caffeine, and doxapram on clinical and biochemical viability parameters in hypoxic neonatal dogs. Methods: Forty-five puppies born via elective or emergency cesarean section were included, of which 35 exhibiting cardiorespiratory depression (heart rate ≤ 180 bpm, respiratory rate < 15 movements per minute, Apgar score < 7, and reflex score < 3) were randomly allocated into aminophylline group (AG; n = 12), caffeine group (CafG; n = 11), or doxapram group (DG; n = 12). Ten clinically healthy neonates constituted the physiological control group (CG). Apgar score, neonatal reflexes, lactate, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, blood gas parameters, and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) were evaluated immediately after birth (M1) and 10 min following treatment (M10). Results: No significant differences were observed in laboratory parameters among groups (p > 0.05). Although all evaluated drugs improved clinical status by increasing heart rate, respiratory rate, and reflex scores, caffeine produced the greatest enhancement in vitality. The Δ Apgar score showed a significant difference between CafG and DG (p = 0.0095), while no statistical differences were detected between AG and CafG (p = 0.08) or between AG and GD (p = 0.60). Conclusions: Aminophylline, caffeine, and doxapram supported postnatal resuscitation in hypoxic neonatal puppies; however, caffeine demonstrated superior improvement in Apgar recovery, suggesting its potential as a preferred pharmacological adjunct in neonatal canine resuscitation protocols.
Evaluation of the safety and feasibility of extracorporeal therapy: therapeutic plasma exchange in dogs - report of five cases Suellen Rodrigues Maia, Reiner Silveira de Moraes, Silvano Salgueiro Geraldes, Maria Gabriela Picelli de Azevedo, Amanda Garcia Stefaniszen, Márcio Antônio Batistela Moreira, Angélica Afonso, Henry David Mogollón García, Adriano Sakai Okamoto, Alessandra Melchert, Maria Lúcia Gomes Lourenço, Regina Kiomi Takahira, Fabiana Ferreira de Souza, Rogério Giuffrida, Priscylla Tatiana Chalfun Guimarães Okamoto BMC Veterinary Research, 2025 BACKGROUND: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been used in immunological diseases, conditions of hyperviscosity, and the removal of protein-bound drugs and toxins. Although complications may be encountered, its use has been reported to offer some degree of safety and clinical improvement for dogs. This case report aimed to describe the feasibility and safety of TPE in dogs. CASE PRESENTATION: Five dogs with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and/or canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) not responsive to immunosuppressive treatment underwent TPE by centrifugation. Physical, laboratory, and cardiovascular parameters were assessed pre- and post-TPE. Although one dog presented with angioedema and another dog presented with neurological signs (nystagmus) during the procedure, no other significant hemodynamic or hemostatic complications were observed, and both the physical and cardiovascular parameters remained stable post-TPE. Both angioedema and nystagmus were controlled at post-TPE. A tendency for a decrease in serum protein and ionic calcium was the main laboratory finding. CONCLUSIONS: Centrifugation-based TPE is a safe and feasible therapy in dogs with IMHA and CVL. Attention should be given to hypocalcemia, the tendency toward hypoproteinemia, and secondary complications such as the occurrence of neurological signs.
Outbreak of Trypanosoma vivax in Dairy Cattle from São Paulo, Brazil: Haematological and Molecular Diagnostic Approaches Karoline Koether, Ana L. H. de Albuquerque, Luiza S. Zakia, Fernanda Panseri Rodrigues, José P. Oliveira-Filho, Regina Kiomi Takahira, Alexandre S. Borges, José Gabriel G. Lins Parasitologia, 2025 Trypanosoma vivax, a haemoprotozoan of African origin, has spread throughout Latin America, mainly affecting cattle through mechanical transmission by flies. This study reports an outbreak of T. vivax on a dairy farm in the midwestern region of São Paulo State, Brazil. Clinical signs included progressive weight loss, lethargy, hyporexia, reduced milk production, abortions, neurological signs, and deaths. The herd comprised 238 crossbred Holstein-Gir cattle (200 cows, 38 calves). Blood samples were collected from 104 randomly selected cows and all 38 calves to assess hematocrit (HCT) and total plasma protein (TPP), and detect trypomastigote forms using blood and buffy coat smears. PCR was performed on EDTA blood from 30 smear-negative cows. Trypanosoma sp. was identified in 51.9% (54/104) of the smear samples, with morphometric confirmation of T. vivax infection. About 66.6% (20/30) of the smear-negative cows tested positive by PCR, showing the higher sensitivity of molecular tests. Anemia was observed in 56.8% of infected cows, with significantly lower HCT and TPP values than in uninfected animals. The absence of quarantine for new animals, high fly density, and shared needles for oxytocin injections were likely contributing factors. This study underscores the crucial role of molecular diagnostics in accurately investigating outbreaks.
