Antibacterial Activity of Melastoma malabathricum L. Leaves and Efficacy in Liquid Spray Formulation against Acne-Causing Bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis) Rizky Y. (M. malabathricum L) is traditionally used by the Anak Dalam tribes in Jambi Province to treat diarrhea and is empirically recognized for antibacterial properties, particularly as an anti-acne agent. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of crude extracts, fractions, and the physical stability of the liquid spray formulation derived from M. malabathricum L. leaves. For the experiment, leaves were extracted using the maceration method, and the crude extract was fractionated with liquid-liquid extraction. Antibacterial activity of crude extracts and fractions of M. malabathricum L. was tested using the disc diffusion method at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20% against Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) ATCC 12228. The results showed that all samples had antibacterial activity, namely crude extract (10.4 mm, 16.2 mm, 20.4 mm), n-hexane fraction (10.2 mm, 15 mm, 17.5 mm), ethyl acetate fraction (10.5 mm, 16.4 mm, 18.3 mm), and aqueous residue (10.3 mm, 12 mm, 16.8 mm). Ethyl acetate fraction (10%) showed the highest antibacterial effect (16.4 mm ± 0.20), while liquid spray formulation of the fraction produced a 15.7 mm ± 0.88 inhibition zone. F1 comprising ethyl acetate fraction (10%) was successfully incorporated into liquid spray formulation that showed good stability and was non-irritating. In conclusion, ethyl acetate fraction of M. malabathricum L. leaves showed the most potent antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis and remained effective after being formulated into a stable liquid spray.
Network Pharmacology and Molecular Docking Identify the Potential Mechanism and Therapeutic Role of Scutellaria baicalensis in Alzheimer’s Disease [Letter] Rizky Yulion, Lili Andriani, Siti Aliyah Drug Design Development and Therapy, 2024 We congratulate Peng and Zhou for successfully publishing their article “Network Pharmacology and Molecular Docking Identify the Potential Mechanism and Therapeutic Role of Scutellaria baicalensis in Alzheimer’s Disease”. 1 This study explores the possible mechanisms by which Scutellaria baicalensis protects against Alzheimer’s disease using network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches. Scutellaria baicalensis is a Chinese herbal medicine containing various active chemical components, mainly flavonoids. Flavonoids such as baicalin, wogonoside, and their aglycones baicalein and wogonin are the major bioactive compounds extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis . 2 These flavonoids have been reported to possess various pharmacological functions, including anti-cancer, hepatoprotection, antibacterial and antiviral, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective effects. 2 The findings and drug design discussed in this article are interesting and worth further exploration. Evaluation of the in vivo Laxative Effects of Aqueous Leaf and Stem Extracts of Artemisia abyssinica in Mice [LETTER] Siti Aliyah, Rizky Yulion, Santi Perawati Journal of Experimental Pharmacology, 2024 We have closely read the recent article titled “Evaluation of the in vivo Laxative Effects of Aqueous Leaf and Stem Extracts of Artemisia abyssinica in Mice” by Ayele et al. 1 Interestingly, according to our searches, there is limited research available on the Aqueous Leaf and Stem Extracts of Artemisia abyssinica (A. abyssinica) . Most previous studies have focused on the antibacterial and antioxidant effect of A. abyssinica using crude extracts and essential oils. Hence, this study is likely the first evaluation of the laxative effects of Aqueous Leaf and Stem Extracts of A. abyssinica . This study used a method to prepare aqueous leaves and stems of A. abyssinica extracts by heating a plant in 0.8L of distilled water in a 1:1 ratio. Sorita et al (2023) highlighted the benefits of using aqueous extracts, such as minimizing the reliance on organic solvents, reducing expenses, and lowering energy consumption. 2 Based on the results of this article, aqueous leaf and stem extracts of A. abyssinica have demonstrated laxative activity, specifically loperamide-induced constipation.
