  • Adaptive Stress Prediction with GSR, SMOTE Balancing, and Random Forest Models
Rino Ferdian Surakusumah, Rechi Yudha Apza
    Jurnal Resti, 2025
Stress is a pervasive condition that affects mental health, productivity, and quality of life across populations. Traditional methods for stress assessment, such as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), rely on retrospective self-reporting and are limited by subjectivity and delayed feedback. To address this gap, this study developed an integrated real-time stress monitoring system combining Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and machine learning algorithms. Primary GSR data were collected from 30 participants under varied conditions, supplemented by secondary data from the WESAD dataset. A Random Forest classifier was employed to categorize stress into four levels: normal, mild, moderate, and severe. To address class imbalance, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied, leading to improved model robustness. The system achieved a cross-validated classification accuracy of 69%, with substantial improvements in the detection of moderate and severe stress cases compared to traditional threshold-based methods. A strong agreement (Cohen’s Kappa κ = 0.82) was observed between system predictions and PSS-based stress assessments. Feature importance analysis identified mean GSR value and Skin Conductance Response (SCR) amplitude as the most influential indicators of stress. The system was evaluated for usability, receiving high user ratings in terms of accessibility, simplicity, and interactivity. A simple Python-based command-line interface (CLI) was also developed for real-time stress prediction based on input features. This research demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of combining physiological sensing, predictive analytics, and user-friendly interfaces to enable scalable and adaptive stress monitoring. Future developments will focus on integrating additional physiological modalities and deep learning techniques to enhance predictive performance and personalization in clinical and everyday contexts.
  • Fuzzy logic assessment of X-ray tube risks in robotic C-arm angiography: a failure mode and effect analysis study

This research examines the integration of robotic C-arm technology in angiography, a critical tool for treating cardiac conditions. The robotic C-arm, which includes an X-ray tube, is essential for scanning patients during procedures. The study also investigates the associated risks, specifically in Indonesian hospitals with cardiac facilities. Angiography is used to diagnose and treat heart disease by visualizing blood vessels and facilitating catheterization procedures. However, its mobility poses hazards and can impact the process. To address potential risks, failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is utilized. Traditionally, risk assessment using risk priority numbers (RPN) is conducted, but these may not accurately reflect failures due to complex evaluating processes. To overcome this limitation, fuzzy logic is employed, enhancing risk assessment accuracy. Through this approach, twenty-seven failure modes are identified across two brands, with ten major ones prioritized using fuzzy logic. These findings facilitate the development of preventive measures to mitigate future failures and enhance patient safety during angiography in hospitals. In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of robust risk management in medical equipment, particularly in dynamic environments. By integrating fuzzy logic into risk assessment, the study improves prioritization accuracy, enabling effective allocation of resources for preventive actions.
  • A novel design of needle aspiration biopsy monitoring instrument (NAOMI) tested on a low cost chest phantom

Needle biopsy is a medical intervention method for taking a lung tissue sample that suspected as a cancer. The disadvantage is the physicians directly visualize the anatomical structures in an open surgery for lung cancer biopsy procedure. There is a need to develop an instrument that may help the physician to guarantee the accuracy and efficiency while performing needle aspiration biopsy. Therefore, a needle aspiration biopsy monitoring instrument or named as NAOMI is proposed. It consists of a microcontroller system, an IMU sensor, an ultrasonic ranging module, a bluetooth module, and a 9V lithium battery. The experimental testing consist of performance testing, functional testing using chest phantom, and user acceptances. The results showed that the NAOMI improve the accuracy and efficiency while performing the needle biopsy operation.
  • Development of a half sphere bending soft actuator for flexible bronchoscope movement

2014 IEEE International Symposium on Robotics and Manufacturing Automation IEEE Roma2014, 2015
Flexible bronchoscope (FOB) is commonly used nowaday for airway observation in lung diagnosis because of its easier, safer, and good tolerant technique. However, during intubation, FOB may lead to get jammed due to unpassed size. In this paper, a novel soft-tip FOB development using soft actuator mechanism is proposed to solve the jamming problem. The study is focused on the design, fabrication, and implementation stages. The FOB design utilized a molding system that was drawn using SolidWorks and printed using 3D printer. The FOB fabrication used the printed mold to create the soft-tip by pouring the silicon rubber and mixing the inner and outer layers into the mold and solidifying them. The FOB initial implementation was performed by using tube and air pressure generator. By fabricating two types of soft actuator, combining twisting as well as bending movement actuator, a half-sphere movement actuator was developed. The result shows that the proposed soft-tip could move close to half-sphere bending motion after standard pressure driving experiment was executed.
