With fossil fuels as a major global energy source and their associated carbon emissions impacting the climate, there is an urgency in transitioning to carbon-free energy sources (CFESs) such as nuclear and renewables (solar, hydroelectric, and wind). The need for an updated electric power transmission and distribution system arises due to the variable loads and geographic diversity of renewable energy sources. This perspective explores the idea of the "Earth Grid," which proposes an intercontinental electric grid facilitated by three technological advancements: enhanced information and communication technology (ICT) applications in the electric grid, development of inter-country grids for power-sharing, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for efficient operation and maintenance. Further, the article discusses the need for a collaborative effort on the global stage to transform the existing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution sector to create a globally interconnected carbon-neutral Earth Grid infrastructure for accelerated carbon-free energy access for all. - Beyond drive cycles: mapping the intricacies of electric vehicle battery health in diverse environments and driving conditions

<div>This article presents an artificial neural network (ANN)–based hybrid design methodology for motors used in electric vehicle applications. The proposed method uses ANN to achieve a semi-optimized motor geometry, followed by the drive cycle analysis for the desired vehicle. For this, a large pool of motor design data is used as a training set for the ANN. The semi-optimized motor geometry is further processed for power factor improvement, overall motor efficiency, and electromagnetic noise reduction. The proposed method reduces the overall complexity of the iterative motor design and optimization process. The implementation of the method is demonstrated with a case study wherein a 110 kW three-phase induction motor is designed for an electric bus using the NREL drive cycle. The performance of the motor is verified using a finite element analysis motor using Maxwell ANSYS.</div> <div>The work described in this article was motivated by the complexities of the iterative motor design process, which involves a high level of human resources engagement and time consumption. To address this, the presented work proposes a design approach that bypasses all the complex parts of the work by applying machine learning. The main feature of the approach is that it adopts an ANN-based method that provides a primitive set of motor design parameters for different structures/models of the motor. It eases the work of the motor designer, who has to select the best possible motor structure among these structures and revamp it for further improvement of motor performance. The application of the method is more prolific if the motor is designed for an electric vehicle that exhibits variable loading conditions. The assessment of the proposed model by designing a heavy-duty exhibit shows a significant reduction in the process complexities.</div> - An intelligent battery management system (BMS) with end-edge-cloud connectivity - a perspective

In a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), the resultant flux is generated by the interaction between the flux produced by the rotor magnets and the current flowing through the windings. For specific pole-slot combinations, the influence of various winding configurations on electromagnetic parameters is significant. The windings can be varied based on pitch and the number of parallel paths. Generally, variations in the winding pitch affect the harmonics in the back electromotive force (BEMF). This paper compares the effects of different single-layer winding schemes on electromagnetic parameters, including cogging torque, BEMF, torque, percentage ripple in torque, core loss, copper loss, harmonics in current and air-gap flux density, effects on direct axis inductance and quadrature axis inductance, characteristic current, and the overall efficiency map of the machine. - DriveSense: A Noise-Resilient Framework for Driving Mode Identification

Accurate drive mode classification is essential for enhancing the reliability and predictive maintenance of heavy-duty electric trucks. This study proposes a novel fuzzy logic-based framework, DriveSense, for real-time drive mode classification, addressing key challenges such as sensor noise, transitional behaviors, and computational efficiency. The proposed approach integrates a two-stage filtering pipeline, combining adaptive outlier removal and a dynamic Kalman filter to enhance data quality. A fuzzy inference system with smoothened trapezoidal membership functions is then applied to classify driving modes into standstill, constant speed, acceleration, and deceleration while mitigating the effects of noise and edge cases. Performance evaluation using real-world and simulated drive cycles demonstrates significant improvements in classification accuracy (up to 97.8%), F1-score (up to 0.97), and robustness against noise, while reducing false positives. Comparative analysis against baseline models, demonstrates DriveSense’s superior accuracy and generalizability across diverse driving patterns. The framework’s lightweight and interpretable fuzzy inference engine operates with low computational latency, ensuring compatibility with real-time embedded systems typical of heavy-duty electric trucks. Moreover, DriveSense models transitional behaviors through overlapping fuzzy sets and adaptive borderline classification logic, enabling smooth identification of subtle shifts such as rolling stops or gradual deceleration. These results highlight DriveSense’s potential to enhance predictive maintenance strategies, reduce downtime, and support scalable, fleet-wide diagnostics. - Intelligent Analytical Framework for the Design of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors Toward Renewable and Mobility Integration

The increasing demand for sustainable mobility solutions has intensified research on electric motor-driven vehicles. A major challenge in this domain lies in identifying machine design parameters that meet performance requirements with high accuracy, while avoiding the extensive iterations typically needed due to nonlinear dependencies among parameters. In particular, selecting appropriate limits for key nonlinear factors such as current density (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$J$</tex>) and air-gap flux density (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$B_{\delta}$</tex>) is essential to prevent deviations from an accurate design. This work introduces a knowledge-driven machine design methodology that systematically defines these limits, thereby enabling the prediction of near-optimal design parameters without iterative adjustments. The proposed framework is validated through comparison with a reference motor model, and its capability is further demonstrated by the complete development of a 30 kW PMSM using the platform. Results confirm the effectiveness of the approach in accelerating the design process while maintaining accuracy. - Topology-Dependent Transient Behavior and Resonance in Offshore Wind Farms: An EMT and Impedance-Based Study

The collector topology of offshore wind farms plays a decisive role in determining power evacuation efficiency, transient stability, and resonance susceptibility. This paper presents a comparative study of three representative topologies—Radial, DSR, and SG-Star for a 200 MW offshore wind farm composed of forty 5 MW turbines connected via 33 kV submarine cables. Time- and frequency-domain simulations were carried out to evaluate post-fault dynamics, fault ride-through performance, and resonance behavior of offshore wind farm collector topologies. The results show that under a three-phase fault at the terminal node, both radial and SG-star topologies disconnect the affected feeder, leading to similar power losses. In contrast, DSR sustains higher post-fault power through its dual evacuation paths. Dynamic analysis reveals that the SG-star provides faster recovery and stronger damping, while DSR enables smoother reactive current redistribution and reduced converter stress; radial exhibits weaker damping and higher oscillatory distortion. Frequency sweep and R–X analyses confirm that radial is most resonance-prone, with impedance peaks exceeding 3.64 kΩ in the 0.8–2.0 kHz band, DSR redistributes resonance energy but retains a sharp peak at 3.40 kΩ, and SG-star provides the lowest impedance amplification, 1.28 kΩ with compact resonance loops, although with vulnerability to low-frequency mode (0.47 kHz). Overall, the results highlight topology-dependent trade-offs, DSR offers resilience and reliability for medium-to-large projects, and SG-star topologies achieve superior damping for compact layouts, though requiring mitigation of low-frequency harmonics. - Handbook on New Paradigms in Smart Charging for E-Mobility
