  • Assessment of Air Pollution Index (API) Using FAHP and Correlations Between PM10 and Sentinel 5P (TROPOMI) AOD of Jharkhand, India

Nature Environment and Pollution Technology, 2025
In the World Air Quality Report 2022, India ranked 8th in terms of average PM2.5 concentration globally with a value of 53.3 μg/m3, and a number of the 7 most polluted cities are located in India out of 50 top cities. The presence of poor air quality in mining cities has a positive relationship with mining activities, and this scenario persists in different cities of Jharkhand state. In this study, we draw the API (Air Pollution Index) with the help of the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) across the state of Jharkhand by considering parameters such as CO, O3, NO2, SO2, and PM10 and the relationship between Sentinel 5P aerosol optical depth (AOD) and CPCB published ground data of PM10 (i.e., monthly and seasonal) was also explored. The outcome depicts that a high concentration of API is dominant along the north-eastern part of the state due to the intensive mining activity along this part of the state, and the trend of concentration of PM10 in the air is continuously increasing from 2012-2018 as per the GOJ (Government of Jharkhand) report. This study will give insight into the pollution scenario in the mining-dominated state of Jharkhand, and along with that, it will also spread awareness of the impact of mining activities on the atmosphere.
  • Study on site selection of municipal solid waste landfill based on FAHP and FTOPSIS techniques in Barsat Municipality Area, West Bengal, India
    Sanjib Majumder, Ruqaiya Fatma
    Cleaner Waste Systems, 2025
In recent years, India has experienced a dramatic rise in waste generation due to rapid urbanization coupled with economic growth and higher consumption patterns. Thus, finding an ideal site to dump a city’s solid waste is crucial for managing waste in growing urban areas (e.g., ULBs, Class I and II Cities). In this study, ideal municipal solid waste landfill sites were delineated in Barasat Municipality Area (BMA) using Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Fuzzy Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) model. As output, 8 ideal solid waste landfill sites were identified which were further assessed based on expert’s views and post-analysis field observation. Finally, sites 1b and 7 were selected as the most ideal for proposing new waste landfill locations in Barasat Municipality Area (BMA). The outcomes from this study will help local authorities make informed decisions about planning, choosing the best locations for waste landfills in the near future and sustainable waste management. • Waste generation in India has increased from 98.79 g/capita/day in 2017–2018 to123.45 g/capita/day in 2021–2022. • West Bengal is ranked 3rd (69.11 %) in terms of gaps in solid waste management in India with 9475 TPD in 2021–2022. • Present research adopts an integrated approach for selecting solid waste landfill sites, considering TRASH criteria. • Initially this study proposes a number of 8 potential MSW landfill sites covering 1.84 % area of BMA. • Post-field validation has identified 2 sites (i.e., 1b and 7) as highly suitable by following the SWM 2016 regulation.
