Fault-Tolerant Multilevel Converter for Multiphase Switched Reluctance Motor Drives Based on q+2 Converter Mahmoud A. Gaafar, Mohamed Orabi, Hao Chen, Mostafa Dardeer Conference Proceedings IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition APEC, 2025 This paper proposes a new multilevel switched reluctance motor (SRM) converter based on q+2 converter. The proposed converter can offer the three operating modes of SRM (magnetization, regenerative demagnetization, and freewheeling modes). In addition, it can offer simultaneous operation of SRM phases at any of these modes. Thus, it can be used for multiphase SRM. Furthermore, it offers redundant switching states for the SRM operating modes. Thus, it has good fault-tolerance capability. Comparative study between the proposed converter and other SRM converters is introduced. Compared to other multilevel converters (T-type and NPC), the proposed converter uses the lowest number of semiconductors. Real-time simulation results using OPAL-RT are presented to verify the proper operation of the proposed converter. The operation of the proposed converter is investigated also under open-circuit fault condition to verify its fault-tolerance capability.
Split-Source Common-Ground Inverter for Photovoltaic Applications Mahmoud A. Gaafar, Mohamed Orabi, Samir Kouro, Ahmed Ibrahim, Eltaib Abdeen D. Ibrahim Conference Proceedings IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition APEC, 2025 A common-ground (CG) inverter based on the split-source topology is proposed (CG-SSI). The proposed inverter offers the following features: 1) complete leakage current mitigation, 2) voltage boosting capability, 3) continuity of input current, 4) capability of reactive power support, 5) unipolar modulation mechanism; thus, low total harmonic distortion can be achieved. The operating states of the proposed inverter along with the stresses of semiconductors are analyzed. A closed loop control system is developed to achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and load current regulation. A comparative study with other CG inverters is introduced. Experimental and real-time simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed inverter.
