Ocean and Coastal Research, 2025
The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai eruption of January 15th, 2022, was a rare geological event, resulting in atmospheric pressure waves being recorded around the world, along with sea level fluctuations. This research aims to analyze the tsunami and pressure waves observed in the Caribbean and adjacent regions, which were generated by this eruption. These kinds of perturbations are uncommon and have not been seen in many occurrences, let alone with global implications. Modern instrumentation in the Caribbean and adjacent regions, including both barometers and sea level stations, provided a unique opportunity to observe and analyze this event. A comprehensive review of the observations recorded in the Caribbean and adjacent regions linking the barometric observations to sea level perturbations, including observations of the lead/lag relative to the barometric pressure spikes and the frequency content of observable sea level perturbations, will be shown in this study. For instance, most of the stations in this study recorded six barometric spikes, of which the first two generated a significant sea level observation. Circumstances complicating observations, such as interference from factors, e.g. a strong cold front and lack of standardization, will also be discussed. This study, which will integrate observations from across the Caribbean and adjacent regions, aims to better understand the nature of this unique event and how it was observed in the region. As such, this research can offer insight into the factors that may influence volcanic tsunamis, which is invaluable for developing tsunami warning and response protocols. - The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcanic barometric pressure pulse and meteotsunami travel recorded in several Antarctic stations

Anais Da Academia Brasileira De Ciencias, 2024
The Hunga Tonga-Hunga/Hunga-Ha'apai eruption on January 15, 2022 sent off a plume of ash material up to the stratosphere and triggered a meteotsunami and barometric pressure pulse that rippled through the atmosphere and oceans all around the world. The nature of the volcanic event and its global impacts on the oceans, atmosphere, lithosphere and the cryosphere are a matter of debate. Here we present a first overview of the time travel of the sound atmospheric pressure wave through the Antarctic continent based on in situ measurements, which represented a unique event observed through the polar ice sheet during the instrumental meteorological era. In addition, we estimated the tsunami travel time of the Hunga-Tonga event from a first order model to infer its impact over the Antarctic Sea ice and ice shelves. One outcome from our observations and modeling is the detection of the meteotsunami in the Antarctic Peninsula and the impact of the continental relief over the atmospheric pressure wave dispersion. - Microtextural signatures in quartz grains and foraminifera from tsunami deposits of the Portuguese shelf

Geo Marine Letters, 2023 - Hazard Mapping in Urban EnvironmentalProtected Areas: Tijuca National Park
Rodrigo B Santos, Francisco Dourado, Leonard Schumm
Urbe, 2023
Tijuca National Park (Parque Nacional da Tijuca - PNT), in the Carioca Hills, Rio de Janeiro, faces often landslides. This threatens the environment and the infrastructure, such as Estrada do Redentor, which connects the Paineiras Visitor Center (CVP) to the Floresta Visitor Center Sector. Due to the lithological-structure characteristics and the status of urban protection area, many methodologies are not suitable for risk mapping and management. Therefore, a methodological adjustment was developed to identify landslide-prone areas by quantifying, understanding, and spatializing events and conditioning factors. Using GIS tools, we collected data on geological structures and infrastructure to assess risk. As a result, a concentration of high-risk areas was identified near the CVP. Medium risk areas are centralized, while from the middle of the road to Alto da Boa Vista, the predominant areas range from low to medium risk. The most common factors are cracks in the road, loose blocks on the slopes, and cuts in the road. Therefore, on Redeemer Road, there is a combination of factors affecting safety, such as lithological-structure and geomorphological aspects, rainfall, slope and lack of maintenance of existing structures. - Mapping potential risks for the transmission of spotted fever rickettsiosis: The case study from the Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil

Plos One, 2022
Spotted fever rickettsiosis is a zoonosis transmitted by ticks, having a varied clinical course that can lead to death if not managed properly. In Brazil it is more commonly observed in the Southeast, being an emerging public health problem. Hazard mapping models are common in different areas of knowledge, including public health, as a way of inferring reality and seeking to reduce or prevent damage. The aim of this study is to offer a spatial heuristic methodology for assessing the potential risk of transmission of spotted fever in the Rio de Janeiro state, located in the southeastern region of Brazil. For this, we used geospatial tools associated with eco-epidemiological data related to the clinical profile of the disease. The results achieved were substantially encouraging, considering that there are territories with greater or lesser expectation of risk for spotted fever in the study area. We observed that there are important distinctions between the two rickettsiosis scenarios in the same geographic space and that the areas where there is a greater potential risk of contracting rickettsiosis coincide with the administrative regions that concentrated the cases of hospitalization and deaths from the disease, concluding that the scenery found are relevant to the case series for the disease and that the planning of surveillance actions can gain in quality if the use of this spatial analysis tool is incorporated into the routine of local health management. - Possible evidence of the 1755 CE transatlantic tsunami in Brazil
