  • Invisible Victims: Addressing the Sexual and Health Consequences of Stealth Breeding for Brazilian Gay Men
Wendell Ferrari, Pedro Alexandre Costa, Marcia Thereza Couto, Marcos Nascimento
    Journal of Homosexuality, 2026
Stealth breeding is the act in which a man removes a condom during sexual intercourse without the consent of the male partner. This paper explores the context of stealth breeding among gay men in Brazil. Through in-depth interviews with ten gay men who have experienced stealthing, this study highlights its sexual and mental health consequences. The participants, aged 21-49, reside in urban areas of Brazil. Using thematic analysis, the results indicate the dynamics and consequences of stealth breeding, including the decision to seek post-exposure prophylaxis the following day, the reporting of sexually transmitted infections and HIV, the emergence of mental health concerns, and the lack of support from professionals and institutions. This phenomenon has resulted in a significant gap in scientific, legal, and social awareness, which requires urgent attention at the national and global levels. Understanding stealth breeding would assist in the development of preventive strategies, particularly among gay men, thus meriting increased clinical and research attention.
  • Experiences of Stealthing and the Sociodemographic Profiles of Women Victims in Brazil: A National Study
Wendell Ferrari, Conceição Nogueira, Marcos Nascimento
    Social Sciences, 2024
Stealthing is the removal of a condom during sexual intercourse without the consent of one’s partner. Despite considerable media attention devoted to the trend, limited empirical research has examined how women experienced stealthing. This study aimed to contribute toward generating empirical evidence to guide the discussion surrounding stealthing. It is the first empirical research at a national level in Brazil. An online survey was conducted among 2275 women over 18 who experienced stealthing. The study analyzes these women’s sociodemographic profiles and how they experienced stealthing. Most were white, young, had a religion, were highly educated, and belonged to the Brazilian middle class. They usually experienced stealthing during their youth, and the perpetrator was a cisgender man. Most of them did not look for the morning-after pill and post-exposure prophylaxis after the occurrence and never told anyone about this experience. They stated that the perpetrator should be punished. Women reported contracting sexually transmitted infections, experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, or having an illegal abortion. In conclusion, the high incidence of stealthing in the country is notable, which should generate more discussions at academic and legal levels, creating specific laws on the subject so that victims could have more support.
  • Digital activism about gay fatherhood on Instagram: male homoparenting in the picture
Juliana Araujo Mesquita, Marcos Antonio Ferreira do Nascimento
    Ciencia E Saude Coletiva, 2024
In contemporary Brazil, the number of male fathers taking care of their sons and daughters and the initiatives to produce content about fatherhood on Instagram have been significant. This article aims to analyze the concepts that support the digital activism of homoparenting on Instagram, based on gender studies with men. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted using the life narrative method in a digital environment. The results were analyzed and divided into the following sections: parenting project, personal experience of fatherhood, articulation with LGBT political agenda when parenthood becomes a “business”, and haters, criticism, and adverse reactions. It was concluded that the reflection on the experience of fatherhood/masculinity itself is crossed by the social marker of the difference in sexual orientation and the activism for rights that sustain content production. Thus, the uniqueness of each fatherhood is highlighted since the fact of being gay constructs the fatherhood experience for each man. Despite the initiatives brought forth in this study, changes are still in progress, as rights activism coexists with the advancement of conservative forces, which limit the expressions of sexual and gender otherness.
  • “How I transformed myself”: youth, HIV prevention and the contribution of community-based social projects in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Simone Monteiro, Vanessa do Nascimento Fonseca, Marcos Nascimento
    Interface Communication Health Education, 2024
  • Homoparenting: challenges for public health
Romeu Gomes, Rosana Machin, Marcos Antonio Ferreira do Nascimento, Marcia Tereza Couto
    Ciencia E Saude Coletiva, 2024
Although the term "homoparenting" may be perceived as recent in the field of public health, it was coined in 1997 by the Association of Gay and Lesbian Parents in France 1 . This expression refers to families that include at least one adult who identifies as homosexual, raising one or more children 1 .
  • Discussing the relationships between homoparenthood and health
Romeu Gomes, Rosana Machin, Marcos Antonio Ferreira do Nascimento, Marcia Tereza Couto
    Ciencia E Saude Coletiva, 2024
The present article aims to bridge the gaps or deepen the debate to discuss the relationship between homoparenthood and health. This essay is anchored in specific literature. We seek to work on the following questions throughout the text: (i) How is the central theme of this discussion historically outlined? (ii) How does homoparenthood appear in scientific health production in general? (iii) What sociopolitical dimensions emerge around homoparenthood-health relationships? and (iv) What are the limitations and possibilities for exercising reproductive rights between same-sex couples? Among the conclusions, we underscore the challenge of facing the strangeness of homoparenthood against the idea of the so-called called “normal” family based on heteronormative logic. Even in countries with some legal apparatus assuring the rights to homoparental families, their members suffer prejudice, discrimination, and violence.
  • Send it to one, throw it to another: the Zika health emergency on the margins of the State
Martha Cristina Nunes Moreira, Ellen Hilda Souza de Alcantara Oliveira, Daniel de Souza Campos, Marcos Antonio Ferreira do Nascimento, Paulo Cesar Peiter
    Physis, 2024
Temporarily distant from the declaration of the Public Health Emergency of International Importance (ESPII) and Public Health Emergency of National Importance (ESPIN) caused by the Zika epidemic, in 2015, we enunciate the legacy of the humanitarian emergency. Based on qualitative research, through focus groups with health professionals and families of children affected by the Zika epidemic in Natal and Feira de Santana, we seek to discuss this public health phenomenon through the lens of State Anthropology. We conclude that the non-recognition of the State as an instance embodied in the daily practices of its local agents leads to the reproduction of discriminatory practices emptied of political sense and the recognition of moralities that permeate the absences in health promotion actions and recognition strategies, and search for methods to guarantee the right to health.

  • “Here in the favela, nothing stopped”: perception of the COVID-19 pandemics by young men from Complexo da Maré, RJ, Brazil
Lucas Tramontano, Marcos Antonio Ferreira do Nascimento
    Ciencia E Saude Coletiva, 2023
This article discusses the perceptions of young men living in Complexo da Maré, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the adoption of prevention techniques. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with men between 18 and 29 years of age, conducted at the end of 2022, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results point to a partial adherence of young people to recommended prevention practices, with low social distancing, but a high vaccination rate and a resistance to negationist discourses, despite describing the favela as an environment that paid little attention to the pandemic. Factors, such as education and the fragility of employment contracts, were predominant in prevention strategies. The internet is the primary source of information accessed by this population and can be strategic for future health communication and education with young men.
  • Bereavement and paternity: resignifications of the paternal experience after losing a child
    Paula Zanuto Maués, Marcos Nascimento
    Interface Communication Health Education, 2023
