  • CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT IN THE ENVIRONMENT IN BRAZIL: AN OVERVIEW OF ACTIONS RELATED TO SDG 6 - WATER AND SANITATION
Betina Ortiz Bruel, Cezar Augusto Romano, Tatiana Maria Cecy Gadda
Revista De Gestao Social E Ambiental, 2024
Objective: Investigate the Corporate Social Investment (CSP) in the environment in Brazil, focusing on the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – Water and Sanitation. Theoretical Framework: Achieving SDG 6 in Brazil requires partnerships between governments, companies and citizens to guarantee water resources for future generations, and the CSP can contribute in this aspect. Method: Documentary research on BISC Reports (Benchmarking em Investimento Social Corporativo) from 2008 to 2023; GIFE Censuses (Grupo de Institutos, Fundações e Empresas) from 2005 to 2022-2023; and Sustainability Reports of participating companies. Results and Discussion: In BISC surveys, CSP in the environment had a better moment in 2012, representing 12% of investments, when it decreased continuously until 2020, reaching 0.1%, and rising to 5.8% in 2022. Environment prevailed in companies' mandatory socio-environmental applications, meaning legally imposed investments to compensate for environmental impacts. In the GIFE censuses, the average number of companies with CSP in the environment was 42%, but the volume of resources in 2022 was only 5.8% of the total. Only 10 companies had an CSP related to SDG 6, with target 6.6, about protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems, having the greatest performance. Research Implications: The private sector is a large consumer of potable water and the growing demand for water security requires new forms of corporate water management, beyond company walls and legal impositions. Originality/Value: The CSP in the environment in Brazil is still not very representative, but there are success stories to be studied and made a reference for other companies.

Construction companies have been searching for alternatives to increase their profits margins, based on reducing costs, raising productivity, technological solutions and management of production. The sector finds in the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system the possibility of controlling and managing the execution of the works on any work step. The ERP, through comercial software packages for the construction industry, operate in an integrated network. The tool has been used by companies in the construction industry to make production and management more efficient. The ERP system has been used by companies in the construction industry to make production and management more efficient. However, implanting this system provokes a great organizational change, which justifies why some companies achieve good results while others do not. The objective of this article is to identify which variables regarding implantation, management and performance of the ERP system interfere in the organizational maturity of a construction company. It has been proven that construction companies with ERP system have more developed aspects of organization and similar management processes. These construction companies distinguish themselves for their bigger integration between processes and departments; a better information flow; and a higher formalization of activities, projects, processes, company positions and functions.

Paper aims: This paper identifies variables that differentiate the relationship between small and medium-sized construction companies and suppliers; and impact the integration of the supply chain of the construction sector with the aim of obtaining performance gains. Originality: The data was collected through a questionnaire to two specific groups of business: small and medium-sized construction and suppliers. Research method: Survey with a sample of 50 construction companies and 50 suppliers. Through the discriminant analysis it was possible to identify the variables related to the relationship between construction companies and suppliers which distinguish more both groups of business. Main findings: The biggest points of divergence are: operational relationship, degree of commitment with the product cycle, expectation of compliance with the agreement and pressure for a rise in quality. Implications for theory and practice: The researched companies are not committed with the performance of the supply chain in the sector.

  • Structure formation processes of composites on the base of hazardous electric arc furnace dust for production of environmentally clean ceramics
Vsevolod Mymrin, André Nagalli, Rodrigo E. Catai, Ronaldo L.S. Izzo, Juliana Rose, et al.
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2016
The use of industrial wastes, especially of hazardous wastes, to substitute traditional natural raw materials is one of the most urgent problem to prevent environmental tragedies on our planet. This paper experimentally confirms that one of the most hazardous industrial waste from the steel-making process, i.e., electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), can be used as a valuable component in composite ceramic production, which uses other industrial wastes, such as foundry sands, galvanic glass microspheres and acid neutralization salt. The total percentage of industrial waste used as raw materials reached 85%. Only a small amount of a traditional brick factory's clay-sand mixture (15–25%) was used to produce the ecologically safe ceramics. All of the wastes that were used as raw material contained varying amounts of heavy metals in quantities that greatly exceeded the sanitarium norms. The ceramics were sintered at 900°, 950°, 1000°, 1050° and 1100 °C and exhibited flexural strengths that reached 13.97 MPa with extremely low leaching and solubility of metals. XRD, SEM, EDS and LAMMA methods determined the appearance of the vast areas of glassy structures with small inclusions of mullite, hematite, anorthite, thenardite and quartz. Almost complete (till 85%) replacement of natural raw materials with hazardous industrial wastes could significantly improve (32–46%) the flexural strength and others mechanical properties of the ceramics. Therefore, the use of hazardous industrial waste enhances the ceramics properties and improves the quality of environment because of high heavy metals (Sn, Pb, Zn) content with very low melting points.
  • Red ceramics enhancement by hazardous laundry water cleaning sludge
Vsevolod Mymrin, Kirill Alekseev, André Nagalli, Rodrigo E. Catai, Ronaldo L.S. Izzo, et al.
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2016
Permanently increasing number of industrial and municipal wastes accumulated in the dumps, inevitably leads to contamination of soils, surface waters and subterranean waters, the atmosphere and is a perceptible factor of climate change on our planet. This paper is one more proof that waste utilization, as a valuable source of components for new materials production, is environmentally and economically the best way for their management. The purposes of the research were the next: to develop eco-friendly ceramics that include and immobilize hazardous laundry sludge after cleaning of extremely polluted industrial uniforms with high contents of As, Ba, Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, Cu, Zn and grease, oil, resin, tar, paints, organic volatile compounds, etc.; to improve the mechanical properties of red ceramic, using laundry sludge; to demonstrate a possibility of natural raw materials extraction decrease, partially replacing them with laundry sludge. This sludge was introduced in the traditional clay-sand mix in the amount of 0, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 wt. %. After sintering of these composites at temperatures 1000°, 1050°, 1100°, 1150 °C the maximum values of flexural strength resistance of the ceramics was 15.6 MPa, values of linear shrinkage ranged from 4.5 to 14.1%, water absorption values – from 13.0 to 20.3%, and density values ranged from 1.65 to 1.83 g/cm 3 . All these characteristics of the mechanical properties of the developed materials significantly exceed the properties of ceramics from traditional clay-sand mixes without laundry sludge. The leaching and solubility values of the heavy metals immobilized within these ceramics are hundreds of times lower than threshold levels set by the national standards of Brazil. This study showed that industrial laundry sludge can be safely used as additive to ceramics in proportions of 10–20% wt. %, enhancing the mechanical properties of the materials and constituting an ecological way to manage these wastes.
