Exploring the role of self-control in the relationship between happiness and internet addiction among teenagers Zulkarnain Zulkarnain, Indri Kemala Nasution, Raras Sutatminingsih, Rifka Sari South African Journal of Education, 2025 The internet has revolutionised communication, providing teenagers with opportunities for connection and sharing information. However, excessive internet use raises concerns about its negative impact on daily life and well-being. With this study we examined the mediating role of self-control in the relationship between happiness and internet addiction among 260 teenagers using a cross-sectional design. Validated self-administered assessments measured happiness, self-control, and internet addiction. Smart PLS analyses revealed a significant negative relationship between happiness and internet addiction, with self-control mediating this association. These findings highlight the importance of fostering self control to mitigate the risks of internet addiction. Schools should implement strategies to promote self-regulation, encourage balanced internet use, and engage with parents to support students’ well-being.
Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Among Rice Farmers in Lake Toba Highland, Indonesia Rizabuana Ismail, Erika Revida, Suwardi Lubis, Emmy Harso Kardhinata, Raras Sutatminingsih, Ria Manurung, Bisru Hafi, Rahma Hayati Harahap, Devi Sihotang Sustainability Switzerland, 2025 Climate change has increasingly disrupted traditional farming systems, particularly in highland areas where environmental changes are more pronounced. This study explores how rice farmers in the Lake Toba highlands, Indonesia—both irrigated and non-irrigated—have gradually shifted away from traditional knowledge (TK) in response to climate challenges and what new adaptation strategies have emerged to sustain rice production. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a broad and holistic perspective. Data were collected from 130 purposively selected rice farmers in two sub-districts: Harian (irrigated) and Pangururan (non-irrigated). Data were gathered through in-depth interviews guided by semi-structured statements, focusing on farmers’ lived experiences and adaptation strategies across the rice farming cycle—from planting to harvesting. The findings revealed that while the two groups differ in water access and environmental conditions, they show similar trends in shifting away from traditional indicators. Farmers increasingly adopted new adaptation strategies such as joining farmer groups, using water pumps in non-irrigated areas, switching to more climate-resilient crop varieties, and adjusting planting calendars based on personal observation rather than inherited natural signs. This shift from traditional to practical, experience-based strategies reflects farmers’ responses to the fading reliability of traditional knowledge under changing climatic conditions. Despite the loss of symbolic TK practices, farmers continue to demonstrate resilience through peer collaboration and contextual decision-making. This study highlights the need to strengthen farmer-led adaptation while preserving valuable elements of TK. Future research should expand across the Lake Toba highlands and incorporate quantitative methods to capture broader patterns of local adaptation.
Student’s digital literacy competence and its implications for the learning process Iskandar Zulkarnain, Yovita Sabarina Sitepu, Raras Sutatminingsih, Mickhael Rajagukguk International Journal of Evaluation and Research in Education, 2024 This study measures and compares the digital literacy index between general and vocational high school students. The aim is to determine each student’s ability to understand and implement literacy skills in the digital space. The notes from the findings of this study are then related to the proper implementation of the learning process between the two groups of education levels. This study uses quantitative methods, with the research design as a survey. The population of this research is general and vocational high school students in Medan, Indonesia using a margin of error of 5%. The sampling technique in this study used the quota sampling method proportionally to 400 respondents, with 220 respondents coming from general high school education level and 180 respondents from vocational education level. The results of this study indicate that vocational high school students have a higher digital literacy index than general high school students.
Tutur: language and traditional communication in the Mandailing community, Indonesia Iskandar Zulkarnain, Sakhyan Asmara, Raras Sutatminingsih Cogent Arts and Humanities, 2023 Tutur contains moral values, ethical, and good manners with very high spiritual values. This research used the communicative phenomenological method that is part of the qualitative method. The research was conducted at Pasar Maga Village, Lembah Sorik Merapi Sub-district, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatera Province. The data were gathered by conducting in-depth interviews, participatory observation, field notes, documentation, and literature study. The results showed that someone who has understood and applied the meaning of each Tutur can maintain harmony, concord, and intimacy in society. By mastering Tutur, the person will be able to select the right words and to place his interlocutors correctly according to their position and role.
Self-disclosure of Indonesian and Malaysian communities regarding COVID-19: A multicultural study Raras Sutatminingsih, Iskandar Zulkarnain, Robert Sibarani, Nor Shafrin Ahmad, Zulkifli Hussain, Zuhda Husain Cogent Social Sciences, 2023 This study aims to determine to what extent adult Indonesians and Malaysians self-disclose COVID-19 related information during the pandemic. Using an online survey, the study obtained quantitative data in understanding the five dimensions of self-disclosure—amount, valency, accuracy, intention, and intimacy as suggested by Devito. Using descriptive statistics and analysis (mean scores, percentages, and frequencies), the findings demonstrate the patterns and behaviours of Indonesians and Malaysians in self-disclosing COVID-19 related information against the demographic background of respondents’ academic qualification, gender, employment, education, ethnicity, and age. Findings indicate that, generally, Malaysians are more open than the Indonesian when it comes to disclosing sensitive information during the pandemic. Several unique findings seem to indicate the potential of a new understanding of self-disclosure, as well as of altering theories in this field. Nevertheless, more studies are needed before making a strong claim on theorizing of a new way of framing self-disclosure.
Assessing social-psychological functioning between Malaysian and Indonesian undergraduates: a Rasch model analysis Ahamd Zamri Khairani, Nor Shafrin Ahmad, Raras Sutatminingsih Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education, 2022 PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess the psychometric properties of the Flourishing Scale (FS) by employing samples of Malaysian and Indonesian undergraduates. In addition, the present study seeks to identify aspects of the social-psychological functioning that were perceived differently by both samples.Design/methodology/approachThe present study employs the descriptive design to provide descriptions about psychometric properties of the FS. In total, 351 first-year undergraduates were employed as samples of the study. The authors employed the Rasch measurement model framework using the quantitative approach to analyze the data.FindingsGenerally, the results showed that the FS demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties for both samples. However, the Malaysian and Indonesian samples differ significantly in half of the social-psychological functioning aspects.Research limitations/implicationsOne limitation of the study was the relatively small sample size students in one higher education institution in each country. In addition, in both countries, the undergraduates demonstrated obligatory roles toward their lecturers. Therefore, their response might not be truthful and only respond as requested.Originality/valueWhilst social psychological functioning has been identified as important aspects of well-being, the construct has yet to be studied in the eastern culture in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Markobar: Local wisdom based-rhetorical model Iskandar Zulkarnain, Muryanto Amin, Rizabuana Ismail, Febry Ichwan Butsi, Sakhyan Asmara, Raras Sutatminingsih Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, 2021 The objective of the research was to find out the reference to alternative rhetoric by digging up markobar as the value of local wisdom implemented in Mandailing ethnicity that uses markobar culture as a local wisdom in communicating in a formal forum. This research used communicative ethnography method. It was conducted at Kelurahan Pasar Maga, Lembah Sorik Merapi Sub-district, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatera Province, Indonesia. The event or the Markobar activity as the object of the research was the Mandailing traditional wedding ceremonies. The research subjects were the informants who got involved in the interaction in the traditional communicative activity, Markobar. The data were gathered by conducting literature study, participants’ observation, and in-depth interviews. The gathered data were analyzed by using Milles and Hubberman model, consisted of Collecting Data; Data Display; Data reduction; Conclusion Drawing; and Evaluation. This model is referred to 8 (eight) components of Hymes; namely, SPEAKING rhetorical analysis. Empirical data found in the fieldwork would be connected in order to develop Markobar as a traditional local wisdom based-rhetorical model. The result of the research showed that in order to master Markobar, one had to understand Dalihan na Tolu and Tutur. In Markobar, rhetorical narration is deductive. This speech (Markobar) has to be presented with full of carefulness, especially in selecting the appropriate words and utterances. The speaking method in it is highly emphasized on the aspect of tenderness, either in intonation or in diction. As a genre, it is an art of speaking which is aimed to attract sympathy; its narration is intended to attract the attention of the listeners and to be successful in achieving its goal. The model developed is AHLI HORAS, an acronym of Akhlak (morals), Ilmu (science), Hormat (homage), and Rasional (rationality).

Dynamics of resilience on women as intimate partner violence survivors Sri Mulyani Nasution, Raras Sutatminingsih, Marhamah Marhamah Journal of Educational and Social Research, 2020 Women become weak and hopeless when suffering as a victim of Intimate Partner Violence. They experience multiple adversities and conduct searches and struggles to be able to survive and escape from these adversities. Previous research has focused more on efforts to find things that involve domestic violence; however, this research focuses more on finding solutions for women as victims of Intimate Partner Violence. Research has been conducted with qualitative methods that aim to explore the dynamic of resilience on a woman who survives from Intimate Partner Violence. Research’s questions are being compiled based on the understandings about the personal construct and the process of resilience that involved the violence she suffered, thinking style, seven factors of abilities on resiliency, social support, and how the participant’s current life is decided as the main theme of the research (Theme Category) which will be divided into several detailed themes. General results of the research are as follows: (1) Participants experience three types of violence (2) Victims' rejection of violence based on their thinking style which means violence should not be tolerated. (3) Social support greatly influences the victim's ability to survive (4) Initially, participants did not get adequate social support which caused the victim's inability to rise again. When participants begin to receive social support, they continue to try to get out of violence. (5) Several active strategies to control or stop violence can be found in the results of the analysis of research data. (6) Inner strength comes from the behavior of faith in God and identity as a mother. (7) Positive results obtained in this life. Ultimately, these themes will contribute to the resilience model of Intimate Partner Violence. Research conclusions will be discussed based on relevant theory.
