Antibacterial Activity of a Mouthwash Containing Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng Extract and Lippia sidoides Cham. Essential Oil Wilma Francisca da Silva, Carla de Fatima Alves Nonato, Débora Odília Duarte Leite, Fabiola Fernandes Galvão Rodrigues, Fazia Fernandes Galvão Rodrigues, Ana Cecília Calixto Donelardy, José Galberto Martins da Costa Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2026 This study investigated the development of a mouthwash formulated with Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extract (PaEE) and Lippia sidoides leaf essential oil (LsOE), exploring their antibacterial potential. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated in vitro using the broth microdilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus. Chemical analysis of LsOE by GC/MS identified active compounds such as thymol and carvacrol, while PaEE demonstrated the presence of flavonoids, anthocyanins, mucilages, tannins, and phenolic compounds. Both extracts exhibited antibacterial activity, with LsOE and the natural mouthwash showing intermediate efficacy (MIC 128 µg/mL), while PaEE alone was less effective (MIC 512 µg/mL). The formulated mouthwash (F1) significantly reduced bacterial growth, and the combined use of LsOE and PaEE indicated a synergistic effect. These findings support the potential of plant‐based formulations for dental biofilm control and encourage further research to expand their applicability in public oral health.
Dominance of Ricinus communis in the Semi-Arid Region Mediated by Allelopathy Bruno M. Alcântara, Felipe R. Santos, José Anderson S. Silva, José W. Almeida‐Bezerra, José Galberto M. Costa, Delmira C. Silva, Cláudia M. Furlan, Maria Arlene P. Silva Weed Research, 2026 The introduction of invasive alien species can adversely affect the functioning of natural ecosystems. Ricinus communis L., widely present in the Brazilian semi‐arid region, establishes itself in areas with native species, such as Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos, because it does not go dormant and disperses balocorically, which can affect the latter's plant succession. This study aimed to evaluate whether the leaf biomass of R. communis exerts a negative allelopathic effect associated with its introduction into natural ecosystems. Leaves of R. communis , collected at the end of senescence, were mixed in alternating layers with Caatinga soil and allowed to decompose for 90 days at different concentrations by total soil mass (w/w). The chemical constituents of the decomposed R. communis material were identified using GC–MS. The GC–MS chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of 10 compounds, grouped into five main classes: monoglycerides, alkanes, fatty acids, terpenes and monosaccharides. Key compounds identified include Phytol (C 20 H 40 O) and palmitic acid (C 16 H 32 O 2 ). The byproducts of R. communis leaf decomposition had negative effects on seedling germination. At the two highest leaf litter concentrations, a 90% reduction in the seed germination rate was observed. For the post‐germination period, results showed a correlation between the residence time of allelochemicals in the substrate and the concentration of leaf biomass, with negative effects being most prominent at the highest concentration of R. communis leaves. Regarding the morpho‐anatomical analysis, significant variations in the tissue thickness of the radicle and hypocotyl were observed, in addition to pronounced qualitative changes. The results of this study confirm R. communis exhibits negative allelopathic potential against H. impetiginosus . This may lead to the reduction or elimination of the latter species in the medium to long term, directly impacting plant succession within the natural ecosystem.

Chemical and Biological Properties of Hymenaea courbaril L.: A Review Cicera Alane Coelho Gonçalves, Geane Gabriele de Oliveira Souza, Ana Maria Fernandes Duarte, Joice Barbosa do Nascimento, Fázia Fernandes Galvão Rodrigues, José Galberto Martins da Costa, Fabíola Fernandes Galvão Rodrigues Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2026 Hymenaea courbaril L., commonly known as jatobá, is a plant traditionally used by native populations for medicinal purposes, in addition to providing edible fruits and durable wood for construction. In Brazilian traditional medicine, products from this species are employed to treat wounds, inflammations, bacterial infections, rheumatism, anemia, respiratory and gastric disorders, bronchitis, and prostate conditions. This review aimed to summarize the phytochemical composition and biological activities of H. courbaril L., establishing a foundation for future studies. The species is rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, terpenes, phenols, and coumarins present in its leaves, fruits, bark, and resin. Scientifically validated bioactivities include antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, muscle‐relaxant, and antiproliferative effects. Low acute toxicity has been demonstrated in in vivo assays. Despite these promising results, gaps remain regarding its chemical characterization, medicinal, and nutraceutical potential. This review highlights the need for further research to validate traditional uses, ensure safe applications, and explore new therapeutic prospects.
Allelopathy as a Strategy for Biological Invasion: Calotropis procera and Its Impact on Plant Succession Bruno Melo de Alcântara, Paulo Henrique Calixto Santana, Felipe Rufino dos Santos, José Weverton Almeida‐Bezerra, José Galberto Martins da Costa, Delmira da Costa Silva, Cláudia Maria Furlan, Maria Arlene Pessoa da Silva Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2026 This article reports on the allelopathic potential of Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T. Aiton foliage on Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos. Predominant species in semiarid environments, especially in the Caatinga of the Northeast, where it acts as an invasive species. The leaves of C. procera were mixed with soil from the Caatinga and left to decompose for 90 days. The control group consisted only of soil from the Caatinga, Northeast, Brazil. The germination test was conducted in quadruplicate (30 seeds/treatment). For growth, 30 replicates per treatment were used, each with one seedling of the recipient species. The identification of the chemical constituents of C. procera was assessed by GC–MS. The data was submitted to the one‐way ANOVA test. Residues from the decomposition of C. procera litter negatively affected seedling germination, with a reduction of up to 80% in the treatments evaluated. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of 18 compounds, grouped into six main classes. Among the main compounds identified were: α‐amyrin (C 30 H 50 O) with 2.69% and O‐acetyl‐β‐amyrin (C 32 H 52 O 2 ) with 6.19% concentration. Significant variation was observed in the thickness of the tissues and regions of the radicle, hypocotyl and leaves of H. impetiginosus . C. procera litter has a negative allelopathic potential on the recipient species, which could lead to their reduction in the natural environment.
Citrus reticulata Blanco: A Review on Chemical Composition and Biological Activities José Walber Gonçalves Castro, Geane Gabriele de Oliveira Souza, José Galberto Martins da Costa, Fabíola Fernandes Galvão Rodrigues Chemistry and Biodiversity, 2026 This review compiled data on the chemical composition and biological activities of Citrus reticulata (Rutaceae) from 49 articles published between 2014 and 2024 in the Science Direct, PubMed, and SciELO databases. The fruit peel stands out for its abundance of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, especially limonene (up to 85.7%), and methoxylated flavonoids such as nobiletin, tangeretin, and hesperidin, which are known for their antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. The essential oil demonstrated larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti and action against Leishmania amazonensis . It is concluded that the peel is rich in metabolites with high therapeutic and industrial potential, and further studies are recommended on mechanisms of action and applications in food, cosmetics, insecticides, and fertilizers.
Anxiolytic, Anticonvulsant Effects, and Cytotoxic Analysis of Methanolic Extracts from the Pulp and Seeds of Annona squamosa L. Debora Odília Duarte Leite, Cicera Janaine Camilo, Natália Kelly Gomes de Carvalho, Johnatan Wellisson da Silva Mendes, Alexandro Rodrigues Dantas, Gerson Javier Torres Salazar, Maria Kueirislene Amâncio Ferreira, Antonio Wlisses da Silva, Helcio Silva dos Santos, José Galberto Martins da Costa Current Bioactive Compounds, 2026 Introduction: Generalized anxiety disorder is a neurological condition that can lead to cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. Physical activity and the consumption of foods rich in antioxidant compounds are strategies that substantially improve anxiety. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the cytotoxic potential of methanolic extracts obtained from the pulp and seeds of Annona squamosa using different analytical approaches, in addition to investigating their anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects in adult zebrafish. Methods: For toxicity in Artemia salina, eggs were incubated and, after hatching, the larvae were exposed to concentrations of extracts (0.06-5 μg/mL) for 24 hours. Toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster involved exposure to different concentrations of extracts (125-2000 μg/mL) with mortality readings every 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Locomotor damage was assessed using the negative geotaxis test. In Danio rerio, anxiolytic activity was investigated through open field, light/dark, and PTZ-induced convulsion tests, where fish were exposed to oral extracts at different concentrations (40, 200, and 400 mg/kg). GABAergic neuromodulation was analyzed using benzodiazepine antagonists. Results: The extracts demonstrated high cytotoxicity against A. salina, with LD50 values of 2.24 μg/mL for the pulp extract and 1.64 μg/mL for the seed extract. In D. melanogaster, toxic effects were limited, with mild toxicity observed for the seed extract at high concentrations. In the zebrafish model, the seed extract showed toxicity at doses higher than 200 mg/kg, while the pulp extract was non-toxic. In terms of locomotor activity, both extracts affected the locomotor behavior of fish and D. melanogaster, with the seed exhibiting more pronounced effects. In the anxiolytic test, the extracts displayed effects similar to diazepam, modulating behavior via GABAergic neurotransmission. Finally, the seed extract demonstrated anticonvulsant activity in zebrafish, particularly in the acute and chronic stages of PTZ-induced seizures, indicating specific therapeutic potential. Discussion: The pulp and seed extracts have different toxicological profiles, with greater toxicity associated with the seed extract, especially at high concentrations. The changes in locomotor behavior and the anxiolytic effects observed in both models suggest that they act on neuromodulatory pathways, possibly mediated by the GABAergic system. The anticonvulsant activity of the seed extract in the acute and chronic stages of PTZ-induced seizures in zebrafish points to a potential therapeutic use in neurological disorders. Conclusion: The study revealed that the methanolic extract from the pulp of A. squamosa exhibited a safe anxiolytic effect, while the seed extract showed both anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects, albeit with acute toxicity. New formulations are suggested to reduce the toxicity of the seeds and explore the plant’s therapeutic potential.

As a result, research has intensified on products with direct antimicrobial effects or as adjuvants to antibiotics and antifungals. Products from stingless bees of the Melipona genus have shown biological properties, such as antimicrobial activity. This study evaluated the ethanolic extracts of geopropolis (EEGMq), wax (EEWMq), and pollen (EEPMq) from Melipona quinquefasciata (“Uruçu‐do‐chão”) against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus 10, Escherichia coli 06, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 24, and Candida spp. The extracts were characterized by high‐performance liquid chromatography‐diode array detection, and antimicrobial activity was assessed through broth microdilution and plate subculture methods. Phenolic compounds identified in EEGMq included p‐coumaric acid, ferulic acid, naringenin, and apigenin. The extracts did not show significant direct antibacterial activity; however, there was potentiation of the antibiotic action when combined with Norfloxacin, Amikacin, and Penicillin against S. aureus and potentiation of Amikacin and Penicillin against P. aeruginosa. EEGMq also exhibited antifungal activity, significantly reducing Fluconazole activity against C. albicans and C. tropicalis. The results suggest that M. quinquefasciata extracts, especially geopropolis, hold promise for enhancing antibiotics and antifungals and contain bioactive molecules that modulate biological activity.
