Unlocking the secrets of change: ethnographic insights into older adults’ leisure time physical activity during COVID-19 Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini Leisure Loisir, 2026 The COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant alterations in various aspects of society, yet its impact on the leisure time physical activity (LTPA) of older adults still needs to be explored. Existing research points to substantial transformations in recreational and sports environments due to the pandemic. This study aims to bridge this gap by conducting ethnographic fieldwork spanning 17 months, delving into how Iranian older adults adapted their LTPA during this crisis. Data were gathered through immersive field experiences, detailed field notes, and opportunistic interviews. The findings reveal two primary shifts in the LTPA of older adults: (1) Disruption of social interactions within physical activities and (2) Psychological uncertainty and perplexity. In response, older adults have employed two coping mechanisms to navigate these changes. This research underscores the importance of policymakers reevaluating their approaches and devising strategies to support the continuity of LTPA, especially in exceptional circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sport tourism and destination attractiveness: bridging gaps in research for emerging economies Erfan Moradi, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini Tourism Recreation Research, 2026 While sport tourism holds immense potential for emerging economies, limited research explores factors influencing destination attractiveness in these contexts. This study addresses this gap by identifying and evaluating key drivers of sport tourism destination attractiveness (STDA) in emerging economies. We broke down the data analysis process into three steps. The first step was to conduct a literature review and use industry and academic experts’ assistance to identify the critical factors- fuzzy Delphi method (FDM). We then utilized the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to evaluate the criteria and ascertain their relative significance. In the last step, the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method was used to deal with the importance and causal relationships among the criteria and to recognize the influential criteria of STDA. We identified 21 key factors related to the STDA in emerging economies. Having a grasp of these key factors can assist managers and decision-makers in optimizing resource allocation, devising targeted marketing strategies for different sport tourism segments, and improving the overall tourist experience in these destinations. This knowledge enables them to make well-informed decisions regarding developing and promoting their destinations, and ultimately stimulates economic growth.
Breaking the silence: Phenomenological unveiling of the hidden impact of abuse on Iranian athletes Fereshteh Mohebbi, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini, Marjan Saffari, Hossein Aghaeinia Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse, 2026 Abuse is a social concern in all life affairs including sports. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experience of Iranian athletes who had been abused in sports. The participants were six athletes who had experienced abuse in sports. Due to the sensitivity of the issue, they were selected through the purposeful snowball sampling method. The results of the research showed seven main themes in the Iranian athletes' experience of abuse in sports: (1) stigma, (2) suppressed hatred and anger, (3) psychological pendulum of continuing and abandoning sport, (4) trampled emotions, (5) ambiguity and imposed harassment, (6) victimhood, and (7) feelings of self-blame. Our findings indicate that abuse among athletes is a multifaceted issue that can take different angles. A better understanding of abuse in sports can help prevent and manage this phenomenon.
A quarter-century of contributions to tourism scholarship: tracing historical themes and citation patterns in current issues in tourism Erfan Moradi, Nasrin Kazemi, Mohammad Reza Salehipour, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hosseini, Zahed Ghaderi Current Issues in Tourism, 2026 This research delves into the intellectual underpinnings and citation performance of Current Issues in Tourism (CIT) over the past 25 years. It uses bibliometric methodology, content analysis, negative binomial regression, and quantile regression to answer its five research questions. This multi-pronged research revealed significant contributions made by the CIT to the tourism domain. We present three key contributions: delineating the journal’s major themes, analyzing thematic evolution over time, and understanding citation drivers. By identifying the dominant themes within the journal, this study provides valuable insight for prospective authors. It also explores thematic evolution within the journal, which sheds light on emerging and declining areas of interest. This knowledge can be invaluable for researchers seeking to position their work at the forefront of the discipline. The negative binomial and quantile regression analysis offer further contributions, identifying and evaluating variables associated with an article’s citation count. This information provides valuable guidance for aspiring researchers seeking to maximise the reach and impact of their publications.
Combined teaching games for understanding and sport education in PE can improve student emotion regulation, intrapersonal intelligence and psychomotor skills Shahram Nazari, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini, Ebrahim Norouzi, David Manzano-Sánchez, Shane Pill Acta Psychologica, 2025 The study aimed to investigate the impact of combined Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) plus Sport Education (SE) on the intrapersonal intelligence, metacognition, emotion regulation and psychomotor skills of school students. The study involved 72 female and male school students with an average age of 14.82 ± 1.26 years. The research was conducted in three stages: baseline, 16 sessions in 2 months TGfU plus SE through football sessions, and post intervention assessments. The results of mixed ANOVA indicated a significant increase in intrapersonal intelligence, metacognition, emotion regulation and psychomotor skills in TGfU plus SE group compared to regular physical education class group from the beginning to the end of the intervention. The findings of the present study provide evidence for the effectiveness of TGfU plus SE pedagogical model in school students. The results suggest that combined TGfU plus SE can be a valuable addition to standard interventions for reducing emotional problems in students. • First study to assess combined TGfU and Sport Education impact across multiple student outcomes. • Intervention significantly enhanced emotion regulation, metacognition, and intrapersonal intelligence in students. • The integrated pedagogical model was also highly effective in developing students' psychomotor skills. • Student-centered PE is a valuable, holistic intervention promoting adolescent mental and physical well-being.
Brain Drain in Sport: Socio-Cultural, Economic Drivers, and Policy Implications of Athlete Migration Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini, Maryam Amini, Erfan Moradi, Fereshteh Mohebbi, Asghar Afshar Jahanshahi Journal of Public Affairs, 2025 The global sports landscape has witnessed a significant rise in athlete migration, shaped by complex socio‐cultural and economic factors. This study employs a qualitative research design based on grounded theory, specifically utilizing situational analysis (SA), to examine the migration dynamics of Iranian athletes. SA was selected for its capacity to provide a comprehensive analytical framework that captures the historical context, social arenas, and positionalities influencing migration trajectories. Findings reveal that Iranian athletes' migration is primarily driven by: (1) socioeconomic instability, and (2) the network of social relationships, which collectively shape five distinct migration positions. By developing a grounded theoretical model, this study offers a nuanced typology of Iranian athlete migration, contributing to the broader discourse on sports mobility, transnationalism, and the intersection of structural constraints and individual agency in migration decisions. From a policy perspective, the study highlights the need for targeted interventions to address the root causes of migration, such as socioeconomic instability and the lack of opportunities within national sports systems. While investments in economic development, sports infrastructure, and talent retention strategies are generally believed to mitigate migration, initial improvements in these areas may not necessarily lead to less migration and could, in some cases, exacerbate the trend. This paper explores this theoretical contradiction and suggests that while investment in sports development is crucial, further research is needed to understand how such policies interact with different types of migration, including economic, forced, and temporary migration. Policies aimed at improving economic conditions for athletes, fostering talent retention strategies, and enhancing local sports infrastructures may still play a role in reducing some forms of migration, particularly if coupled with efforts to create stronger support networks and career development programs for athletes within the country.
Examining leisure constraints and motivations within the psychological continuum model: a study among recreational video gamers Milad Khodadadian, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini, Marjan Saffari Leisure Studies, 2025 This study investigates perceived leisure constraints and motivations among Iranian gamers, employing the Psychological Continuum Model (PCM). Targeting recreational gamers under 30 years old, dedicating 1 to 6 hours per week to gaming, we utilised (D. Funk et al. 2008) PCM stages questionnaire, Crawford’s et al. (1991) perceived hierarchical leisure constraints questionnaire, and Cianfrone et al. (2011) motivations questionnaire. Our analysis, featuring One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for constraints and motivations across PCM stages and Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) for psychological communication, revealed compelling insights. Results indicate a noteworthy increase in perceived constraints with PCM progression (p < 0.05), highlighting significant differences in dimensions such as interest, time involvement, facilities, cost, and interpersonal aspects (p < 0.05). Concurrently, motivations progressively rise with PCM advancement, showcasing significant variations in competition, diversion, fantasy, and social interaction dimensions (p < 0.01). This study’s significant findings illuminate the evolving landscape of constraints and motivations across distinct PCM stages, offering valuable implications for comprehending gaming behaviours within this demographic.
Redefining possibilities: a journey into personality traits, serious leisure, and life satisfaction among athletes with physical disabilities Fatemeh Soraya, Rasool Norouzi Seyed Hossini, Marjan Saffari Managing Sport and Leisure, 2025 This study explores the correlation between personality traits, serious leisure, and life satisfaction among amateur athletes with physical disabilities in Fars province, Iran. Using G*Power software, 132 participants were selected through cluster random sampling. Data was collected through the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Serious Leisure questionnaire (SLQ), and a shortened NEO-FFI questionnaire. Analysis via multiple regressions unveiled a significant positive link between personality traits and serious leisure (p<0.001), as well as a significant correlation between personality traits and life satisfaction (p<0.002). However, no significant relationship between serious leisure dimensions and life satisfaction was found (p<0.05). These results emphasize the impact of personality traits on life satisfaction and engagement in serious leisure among physically disabled athletes. Future studies can delve deeper into specific personality traits affecting life satisfaction and leisure activities among individuals with physical disabilities. Further exploration of cultural and socioeconomic influences in diverse communities could provide comprehensive insights.
