Environmental Assessment on Fabrication of Bio-composite Filament Fused Deposition Modeling Through Life Cycle Analysis Muhammad Farhan, Mastura Mohammad Taha, Yusliza Yusuf, Syahrul Azwan Sundi, Nazri Huzaimi Zakaria Pertanika Journal of Science and Technology, 2024 The environmental effect of a manufacturing or service method is determined by the resource and energy inputs and outputs at each point of the product’s life cycle. In Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), generally, the material used for fabrication is plastic, and the raising of interest from different backgrounds of users could increase the issue of plastic pollution. Therefore, many scholars have proposed an initiative to employ bio-composite in FDM. In this study, an environmental assessment of global warming potential and fine particulate matter emission from the fabrication of bio-composite filament FDM was performed through its life cycle analysis using GaBi Software. Initially, data on resources and energy inputs and outputs were gathered. The functional unit in this study was the 1.0 kg wood/PLA composite filament extruded using a twin-screw extruder. All wastes were collected and recycled. The fabricated composite filaments were transported by container ship with a capacity of 5000 – 200 000 dwt gross weight for 100 km within Malaysia. Based on the results from the GaBi dashboard, the FDM process of bio-composite filament has contributed as much as 138.7 kg CO2 eq on the global warming potential and 1.71e-4 kg N eq. on fine particulate matter by the electricity power generation in extrusion and printing processes. The main factor for this issue is the consumption of coal in electric power generation, which is considered a non-renewable resource. Therefore, it is recommended that natural fibers such as wood fiber be employed in the filament of FDM to reduce the environmental impact. As shown in the study, the materials contribute less to the impact. Further study is suggested to compare the FDM technology with conventional technology using similar materials.
Teaching Factory 2.0: The New Approach to Teaching Factory Concept Hambali Bin Boejang, Syarul Azwan, Amir Hamzah Bin Abdul Rasib, Umi Hayati Binti Ahmad, Lailatul Harina Binti Paijan, Muhammad Zahir Bin Hassan 2024 International Conference on Tvet Excellence and Development Icted 2024, 2024 This study presents the new approach to the teaching factory concept that the Teaching Factory of Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka has adopted. Teaching Factory (TF) provides technical knowledge and skills from industry to manufacturing engineering students. However, in Malaysia, the active involvement of industries in education is insufficient. Moreover, the practical project from the industry used in the classroom as the case study is constrained by the duration of each semester. However, a teaching factory with qualified educators offers an opportunity for the TF to play the role of the faculty’s industrial partner. Similarly, a new product development project can be introduced for the students to indulge in real experimental learning for 3 to 4 semesters. The learning process exposed the students to theories and experiences, conducted by qualified educators and industrial partners through seminars and practical sessions. A product development team was formed, and the product development process started with the design brief and ended with a preproduction prototype. The performance of the product development project was based on its effectiveness and efficiency. The effectiveness was measured through customer acceptance, represented by intellectual property registration, and awards received. Meanwhile, the efficiency was represented by the product development lead time required to fabricate the intended functional prototype. The new concept of TF implementation is considered successful and significantly beneficial to the participants or students. The new concept has also developed the ability of the students to work together and generate the 3D CAD data, engineering build-of-material (EBOM), and operation management documents of manufacturing engineering. The new approach to TF is named Teaching Factory 2.0. It is a viable conceptual approach to the existing teaching factory concept since it integrates holistically the main pillars of knowledge: education, research, and innovation.
Effect of Cutting Speed and Feed per Tooth on the Trimmed Surface Roughness and Tool Wear During Milling of CFRP: Aerostructural Part Syahrul Azwan Sundi, Izzat Afandi Abdul Hakim, Mohd Farid Mahadi, Noramin Nazar Shah, Raja Izamshah, Intan Sharhida Othman, Mohd Shahir Kasim, Mohd Nor Hafizi Pertanika Journal of Science and Technology, 2024 The machining quality plays a pivotal role in determining the service life of components. In this context, the primary focus of the experimental investigation is centered on the impact of cutting conditions during edge trimming of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) material. The ultimate objective of this experiment is to pinpoint the most effective machining parameters, specifically the cutting speed, Vc and the feed per tooth, fz, to minimize damages during the edge trimming process using actual aerostructural sample components composed of CFRP material. Furthermore, the study took into account the issue of tool wear on cutting tools. The Design of Experiment (DoE) technique, specifically the Taguchi L9 orthogonal arrays method, was used to conduct this research. It was shown that the feed per tooth, fz, and the cutting speed, Vc, had the biggest effects on the trimmed surface quality as the longitudinal surface roughness increased. It was demonstrated that the fracture of the pyramidal tooltips in router-type tools happened more frequently at higher cutting speeds, Vc. The optimal machining parameters for minimizing damages during CFRP edge trimming were the combination of the feed per tooth, fz at 0.05 mm and cutting speed, Vc at 50 m/min. The most significant element influencing the tool’s wear was the cutting speed, Vc.
Influence of Remaining Oxide on the Adhesion Strength of Supersonic Particle Deposition TiO2 Coatings on Annealed Stainless Steel Noor Omar, Yusliza Yusuf, Syahrul Sundi, Ilyani Abu Bakar, Verry Andre Fabiani, Toibah Abdul Rahim, Motohiro Yamada Coatings, 2023 The cold spray or Supersonic Particle Deposition technique has great potential for producing ceramic nanostructured coatings. This technique operates at a processing temperature that is low enough to preserve the initial feedstock materials’ microstructure. Nevertheless, depositing ceramic powders using a cold spray can be challenging because of the materials’ brittle nature. The interaction between substrate and particles is significantly influenced by substrate attributes, including hardness, material nature, degree of oxidation and temperature. In this study, the effect of the substrate’s remaining oxide composition on the adhesion strength of an agglomerated nano-TiO2 coating was investigated. The results showed that the coating adhesion strength increased for hard materials such as stainless steel and pure chromium as the annealed substrate temperature also increased from room temperature to 700 °C, indicating thicker oxide on the substrate surface. TiO2 particles mainly bond with SUS304 substrates through oxide bonding, which results from a chemical reaction involving TiO2-OH−. Chromium oxide (Cr2O3) is thermodynamically preferred in SUS304 and provides the OH− component required for the reaction. SUS304 shows a thermodynamic preference for chromium oxide (Cr2O3), and this enables Cr2O3 to provide the necessary OH− component for the reaction.
