Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) are widely used for recovering low-temperature waste heat, particularly in renewable energy systems like biomass. However, their performance is often reduced by undetected heat and gas leakage. This review aims to identify, classify, and assess current leakage detection methods specifically suited for ORC systems, focusing on their effectiveness under typical operating conditions. The scope encompasses thermal and gas leakage detection techniques, including temperature, pressure, and flow rate monitoring, as well as advanced diagnostic technologies. The main findings indicate that heat loss from components, such as the expander, and undetected vapor leakage can significantly degrade system efficiency and output.Continuous temperature, pressure, and flow rate monitoring are the most effective methods for ensuring safety and optimizing system performance, among the reviewed options.Integrating these techniques with Internet of Things (IoT) devices and machine learning offers promising avenues for real-time diagnostics and predictive maintenance.Future research should focus on developing cost-effective, robust sensors suitable for high-temperature and high-humidity environments common in ORCs.This review contributes to the broader discussion on improving ORC monitoring and reliability while proposing practical pathways for technological innovation and sustainable energy conversion.

Polymer materials are widely used due to their versatility; however, their vulnerability to fire is a significant concern, especially under electrical influences on engineered mechanical designs and marine structure applications. This study examines the fire resistance of a polypropylene (PP) blend using Glow-Wire Flammability Index (GWFI) and Glow-Wire Ignition Temperature (GWIT) tests. While previous research typically relies on flame-retardants to address flammability, this work proposes using a simple 1:1 weight ratio blend of two distinct PP types. This specific PP blend was selected to provide balanced material properties and improved processing consistency. The results from glow-wire tests were compared with previous findings to evaluate flammability performance. Our findings reveal that although the PP blend offers enhanced fire resistance compared to neat PP, it remains inferior to PP-containing flame-retardant additives. The outcomes suggest that this blended PP may be suitable for applications where mechanical properties, cost-effectiveness, and recyclability precede fire resistance, such as engineered automotive interiors, mechanical design of marine transportation, and low-risk electrical components in engineering infrastructure. This initial research contributes valuable insights into the fire behavior of PP blends. Moreover, it establishes a foundation for future investigations into polymer fire resistance, encouraging additional glow-wire testing on other polymer systems.
  • Polymer characteristics and additive effects on fire resistance in glow-wire test performance: Part II - Deployed material and regulation

The study aims to assess the characteristics of the combination of polymers and additives, and it is followed by a discussion on evaluating compliance with fire resistance standards. Furthermore, flame-retardant materials, such as aluminum diethyl-phosphinate (AlPi), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and glass fibers, are considered to improve the fire resistance of polymers. The results show that while specific polymers, including polypropylene (PP) and polycarbonate (PC), achieve high GWFI values when combined with flame-retardant additives, not all materials withstand the maximum glow-wire test temperature.

Measurement uncertainty is essential for accurate comparison and decision-making in various fields. The ISO/IEC GUM standardizes uncertainty estimation, yet traditional methods like the Law of Propagation of Uncertainties (LPU) face limitations. The Monte Carlo Method (MCM) offers a solution, especially for complex models. Our study explores MCM's application in refrigerator power measurement, overcoming challenges encountered with traditional methods.Three MCM methodologies-a priori, adaptive with 1 or 2 significant decimal digits-were tested. The findings reveal that while all three methods yield relatively similar results-51.3 estimated measured power with a standard uncertainty of 1.44 -the a priori method with = 10 6 and the adaptive method with 2 significant decimal digits exhibit greater stability compared to the adaptive method with 1 significant decimal digit. This underscores MCM's effectiveness in handling intricate uncertainties and its potential for advancing measurement reliability and quality.

The marine sector is moving towards all-electric ships to improve energy efficiency and reduce air pollution. A key part of an electric propulsion system for an electric ship is the electric motor, especially permanent magnet motors, known for their high torque and efficiency. Recently, brushless DC (BLDC) permanent magnet motors have rapidly advanced, matching the pace of electric boat development. These motors are preferred for their efficiency, reliability, and low maintenance, making them suitable for varying water conditions. Despite much research on BLDC motor modeling, there are few tutorial-style guides. This paper offers a step-by-step tutorial for using Simscape and Simulink to control BLDC motors in electric boats. The simulation results demonstrate excellent speed tracking, closely matching the desired speed without overshooting. The system swiftly adjusts to rapid speed changes during acceleration and deceleration, which is essential for applications requiring quick adjustments. This guide helps engineers and researchers design, test, and optimize motor control systems, promoting efficient and sustainable electric boating solutions.

For tourism-based electric shuttles, high-energy batteries are crucial. A 200 Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack has been designed yet lacks performance evaluation. We conducted performance tests based on ISO 12405-4:2018. The battery comprises 24 cells connected in series, resulting in a 72 V output voltage. Under controlled conditions at 23°C, the test assessed charging and discharging at defined C-rates. The study assessed the resistance, capacity, and efficiency. We also monitored heat distribution in the battery system during test to detect abnormalities. The results revealed that the maximum attainable battery charge rate was C/3. Under this rate, the discharge capacity reached 160 Ah, and the battery temperature rose to just below 36.2°C. On the other hand, charging the battery at C/6 yielded 191.5 Ah, which increased the battery temperature to 31°C. Thus, the energy round-trip efficiency was measured at 86.5%. However, charging the battery at C/3 led to the Battery Management System (BMS) overheating, indicated by the casing temperature exceeding 67 °C. The overheating caused severe damage to the BMS charging component and triggered an automatic cut-off. The higher total battery resistance during charging was identified as the root cause of the issue, emphasizing the need for future research to focus on enhancing the BMS for faster and more efficient charging, improving the service reliability of the electric shuttle.
