The concept of sustainability of the urban realm and community as the key feature of the utopia A Y Fedak, S M Linda Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2022 The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the topic of sustainability as a key basis for the formation of utopia on the example of the work of utopians (architects, politicians, etc.) in the historical context, and to compare their approaches to environmentalism with those prevalent and implemented today. The authors identify three conditional periods of utopia formation from the point of view of urban planning, which clearly demonstrate the shift in the approach to solving relevant problems, namely: spreading the idea of an ideal city (on the example of Franciscus Patricius, Ludovico Zuccolo); rejection of the city as a desirable model of human settlement and an attempt to return to nature (works by William Dean Howells, William Morris, Anatole France); a period of active implementation of environmental technologies in projects since the early 20th century (the work by Ernest Callenbach).
Architectural and Urban Planning Features of Ecotopia A Fedak Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2020 Abstract This article has been devoted to the analysis of the description of architecture in the works of utopian philosophers, and the identification of the main means by which they tried to ensure the environmental friendliness of their society and connection with nature. Utopian ideas and concepts arise as a result of dissatisfaction with the standard of living and contribute to the active development of society. The models of states described in utopian works serve as a source of ideas for possible scenarios for improving current systems. Ecotopies are a specific type of utopias which describe states with a clear and exclusively ecologically-oriented social order. This article presents an analysis of architectural and engineering means of communication with nature in the works by Plato, T. More, T. Campanella, Cyrano de Bergerac, D. Vairasse and V. Odoyevsky. The work of E. Callenbach, as the first example of ecotopia, is analyzed in detail, and the peculiarities of the architecture and urban structure of the cities of Ecotopia are highlighted.
The current features of the central public space functioning in the historical city, A UNESCO world heritage site Bohdan Cherkes, Anna Fedak, Andrii Shtendera Iop Conference Series Materials Science and Engineering, 2019 A common feature of the significant squares in historical cities is the contradiction between the problems of protection and functioning. A striking example of such a contradiction is the Rynok Square in Lviv public space, which since its appearance in the 14th century, has always been a communicative hub for citizens and guests of the city. In 1998, the central part of Lviv was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and only 15 years later, the entrance of private vehicles to the Rynok Square was restricted, making the central square again a public space. Since then, there is no data on the use of square as a public space. Qualitative changes in the functioning of the city square are visible to the naked eye, but it is difficult to assess the scale and vector of these changes without a detailed study. For a comprehensive understanding of the Rynok Square public space functioning and the level of its socialization, we have developed a methodology for evaluating the quantitative characteristics of the social and cultural aspects of the urban environment. From October to December 2018, a pilot study of the interaction of people with institutions and spaces of the Rynok Square was conducted. The survey data gives us an understanding of the current state of using the Rynok Square as a public space, so it might be a good basis for further sociological and economic research. This will allow us to more detailed study to the issues of organizing new public, cultural or service establishments, and the creation of potential spaces for communication. Due to this data, we can speak about behavioral tendencies of residents and visitors of the historical city, which will allow to qualitatively improve the spaces for their future use.
