We present our studies on apodization of pupils with various amplitude filters with respect to images of point objects. The central intensity distribution, first maxima and first minima are compared with and without apodisation. The effects of aberrations and aperture obscuration are also studied. It is shown that in certain cases, the aberrated images can be improved with the help of suitable amplitude filters.

The coherent edge‐response of optical systems apodised with amplitude filters has been studied. It is found that with high degree of apodisation, edge‐ringing can be appreciably mitigated. The analytical studies were made for circular aperture and annular aperture. Variable apodisation with the use of two different filters for various zones of transmission are also studied and it is found that this type of apodisation is more useful in reducing the ringing effect and also there is a perceptible increase in the edge gradient. Hence these amplitude filters are found to be effective in enhancing the resolving power aspects of edge imaging characteristics of optical systems.
