  • Removal of ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin from wastewater using photocatalysis and biological treatment methods: A mini review

International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering, 2025
The increased occurrence of antibiotics in wastewater effluents has emerged as a significant environmental and public health issue, as these contaminants contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance and disrupt the balance of natural microbial ecosystems. Traditional wastewater treatment processes frequently prove inadequate in efficiently eliminating these contaminants. The present study reviews photocatalysis and biological treatment methods, as indicated in the literature, as a comprehensive solution for removing antibiotics such as amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin from wastewater, to determine the most successful treatment strategy for our research. Essential strategies include titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the slurry/suspension mode, doped and immobilized for photocatalytic degradation and the employment of microorganisms in biological treatments are highlighted. Focusing on studies in recent years, the study provides a comparative analysis to identify the most effective treatment methods for these antibiotics.

  • Photocatalytic Degradation of Ofloxacin in Wastewater Using Mg-Ni Co-doped TiO2 Catalyst
Mitresh Malhotra, Alok Garg, Manish Rawat
    Chemical Engineering and Technology, 2024
This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of Mg‐Ni co‐doped TiO2 and its application in the degradation of the pharmaceutical ofloxacin (OFX) under solar irradiation. A wet impregnation method was used to prepare Mg‐Ni co‐doped TiO2. Characterization, optimization, and kinetic studies revealed that the doped TiO2 material is effective in degrading OFX, with potential applications in water treatment or environmental remediation processes. Ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy indicated that the band gap of TiO2 was reduced due to doping with Mg and Ni. A reduced band gap can enhance the material's photocatalytic properties, which is important for its application in solar‐driven degradation processes. The catalyst dose and OFX concentration for the degradation process were optimized. A catalyst dose of 2 g L−1 and an OFX solution with a concentration of 40 ppm, maintained at pH 5, resulted in the highest degradation efficiency. The degradation process followed first‐order kinetics, suggesting that the rate of degradation increased with increasing doping.
  • Circular Economy and Solid Waste
Darshan Salunke, Pratibha Gautam, Alok Garg
Solid Waste Treatment Technologies Challenges and Perspectives, 2024
Waste is only waste if it's not looked into again! Solid waste generation has been increasing day by day as lifestyle variations and upgradation are spreading worldwide. With the increase in the rate of waste generation, the environment, economy, and community health all are deteriorating; all these three are considered the chief pillars of sustainability and without focusing on managing solid waste, it would be difficult to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). While working on managing solid waste, if the concept of circular economy is also clubbed, then the achievement of SDGs can be fastened. The circular economy focuses on reducing the consumption of resources by focusing on the 10Rs concept that is refuse, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, recycle, and recover. This chapter is focused on highlighting the management of solid waste by implementing the concept of circular economy.
  • Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activities of Fe- and V-Doped and Co-Doped TiO2
    Alok Garg
    Chemical Engineering and Technology, 2022
Doping and co‐doping of TiO2 nanoparticles was performed using iron and vanadium by an impregnation method and the as‐synthesized samples were characterized. The redesigned photocatalyst mainly covered the anatase phase in the presence of metal ions in the lattice of the TiO2 photocatalyst. The UV‐vis extinction coefficient and Raman spectroscopy revealed a redshift with an increase in the concentration of metal ions. The synthesized photocatalysts did not change the shape of the nanoparticles. The anticancer and antibacterial activities were checked using doped and co‐doped TiO2 nanoparticles on a lung cancer cell line and E. coli, respectively. The results indicated effective cell inhibition using the co‐doped TiO2 nanoparticles and maximum antibacterial activity in TiO2 doped with ferric ions.
  • Efficient degradation of doxycycline and ofloxacin in an aqueous environment using Fe and Cu doped TiO2-SiO2 photocatalyst under sunlight
Sonam Rani, Alok Garg, Neetu Singh
    Environmental Engineering Research, 2022
Several drugs have sparked interest as potential COVID-19 treatment options. Doxycycline (DOX) has been widely used with other potential agents to reduce COVID-19-induced inflammation. DOX and OFLX, both well-known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory drugs, were chosen as model pollutants. Fe, Cu-codoped TiO2-SiO2 was synthesised as a novel photocatalyst active under sunlight irradiation to treat model pollutants. The synthesised catalyst samples were meticulously characterised using various techniques to evaluate their morphological, optical, and structural properties. The results of BET analysis showed that the TSFC1 sample has a large specific surface area of 288 m2g-1. Maximum degradation of DOX and OFLX (about 98%) was achieved with the TSFC1 catalyst. The photocatalytic reusability was investigated for up to seven successive cycles, and the composite particles maintained their high photodegradation activity for DOX and OFLX. TFSC1 composite, in particular, demonstrated high catalytic activity as well as excellent recovery potential, and its combination with solar light, silica, and dopants can be introduced as a promising strategy for efficiently destroying both DOX and OFLX antibiotics. This study highlights the feasibility of hybridising doped dual semiconductor nanostructures in implementing solar light-powered pharmaceutical wastewater degradation.
  • Highly efficient photo-degradation of cetirizine antihistamine with TiO2-SiO2photocatalyst under ultraviolet irradiation
Sonam Rani, Alok Garg, Neetu Singh
International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering, 2022
Photocatalysis is an extraordinary and vastly researched topic; there is a need to find new ways to support producing composite materials that are cost-effective, efficient and have a low environmental impact. The investigation was undertaken on syn TiO2 by depositing it on silica. The results elucidate the positive effect on photocatalysis activity and the macroscopic structure on which the TiO2 is formed. For the analysis of photocatalyst, various characterisation measurements were undertaken, such as XRD, FTIR, DRS, FESEM, TEM, RS, and BET. The accumulated TiO2 onto the surface of SiO2 stabilised its transformation of the phase from anatase to rutile, resulting in decreased particle size and enhancing its photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation. The concentration of OH• radicals was determined using terephthalic acid as a probe molecule to determine its role in the photocatalytic degradation of antihistamine. The results of BET analysis showed that the syn TiO2-SiO2 sample has a large specific surface area of 192.6 m2 g−1. Maximum degradation of cetirizine (about 97%) was achieved with 80% TiO2-20% SiO2 (TS-4). Recyclability test confirmed that 80% TiO2-20% SiO2 sample was stable up to six cycles.
