    A spatial structure is a hierarchical arrangement of settlement centers and a network system of infrastructure and facilities that support the community’s socio-economic activities. Spatial structure is important because the city’s rapid growth requires regional service center planning. In general, the method for determining the spatial structure uses the Centrality Index (IS) with a variable number of facilities, infrastructure, and people to obtain a hierarchical arrangement of regional service centers. However, this method is often constrained by data limitations, so in this study remote sensing technology was used through night light imagery in identifying potential centers. This study used the Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor, one of the sensors carried by the Suomi-NPP (National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project) satellite. Identification is done by overlaying the night light image with the existing spatial structure to produce potential centers. Based on the analysis results, eight classifications are based on the light emission interval class, where the higher the class, the higher the light emission value, which indicates the potential for a new center. The Pesanggaran sub-district is in class eight, the Tegaldimo sub-district is in class six, and the Banyuwangi sub-district is in class one.
  • The Effect of Land Cover Change on Urban Heat Island Phenomenon Based on Remote Sensing in Probolinggo City

    Probolinggo City is located in East Java Province, Indonesia. Based on BPS data for the City of Probolinggo in 2023, it shows an increase in population growth rate of 1.7% annually. The development of the number and increase in the activity of the population of Probolinggo City certainly affects the increase in the number of built-up areas to meet human needs. An increase in the number of built-up land has led to changes in the environment and urban land use, characterized by declining air quality and global warming due to the increasing phenomenon of Urban Heat Island (UHI). This research was conducted to determine the spatial distribution of surface temperature and the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon and the effect of land cover on the UHI phenomenon. The research was conducted using UHI analysis using the Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing approach to obtain surface temperature values and high-resolution aerial photographs through data extraction. Based on the data processing results carried out over five years in 2013, 2017, and 2022, it is known that high and very high temperatures dominate the surface temperature of Probolinggo City. In addition, there is an effect of land cover on surface temperature based on the results of a simple linear regression analysis.
  • Analysis of Urban Heat Island Phenomenon as A Global Warming Control Based on Remote Sensing in Jember Urban, Indonesia

    Global warming is a world problem because it has a significant impact on the survival of the earth, which is the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon. Jember Regency is a district with a relatively high population growth rate. Total population growth per year is 0.55% in 2020. In general, increasing the urban population increases the need for built-up land to support human activities and can affect surface temperatures, producing the urban heat island phenomenon. This study analyses the UHI phenomenon in 3 sub-districts in urban Jember using the Landsat 8 OLI remote sensing image processing method and TIRS Multispectral Imagery to obtain surface temperature values and high-resolution aerial photos from 2013 to 2021, which will be used to identify surface temperatures through several methods. Extraction is the use of supervised classification (supervised), NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and LST (Land Surface Temperature). The study results illustrate that the UHI value in 2013-2021 tends to fluctuate with decreasing temperatures. The Non-UHI classification dominates the urban area of Jember, where the majority are in the suburbs. Meanwhile, the highest UHI class value spreads in the downtown area.
