An attempt to unravel the differentiable relationship between the activity and reactivity of selected cationic and anionic dye molecules towards their catalytic degradation: An experimental and theoretical study Sajiya Iraqui, Ajay Shankar, Arati Dubey, Adhish Jaiswal Journal of Environmental Management, 2025 This study investigates the degradation of cationic and anionic dyes using chalcopyrite quantum dots (QDs) under various conditions, such as sunlight, darkness, and the presence of quenchers. Depending on the type of dye and experimental conditions, dye removal efficiencies ranged from 83% to 95.6%. Scavenger tests are performed for all the dyes, yielding the order of importance of reactive oxygen species and photogenerated charge carriers as • OH > h + > e − > O 2 •- . Out of these, h + and • OH play their roles differently in the mechanism for cationic and anionic dyes. Theoretical reactivity of dyes is analyzed using conceptual density functional theory, which shows a strong correlation between experimental degradation rates and theoretical reactivity, particularly in aqueous phase. The studied electronic and structural differences between cationic and anionic dyes offer insights into their catalytic degradation mechanisms. Local quantum descriptors were used to assess dye reactivity in both gaseous and aqueous phases, identifying reactive sites for electrophilic, nucleophilic, and radical attacks within the dye structures. Key findings emphasized the impact of orbital delocalization and aromaticity on dye reactivity, noting minimal changes in cationic dyes but significant shifts in anionic dyes upon solvation. Para- delocalization index and frontier molecular orbital analysis revealed that cationic dyes undergo destabilization of HOMO and LUMO levels, reducing the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, while anionic dyes experience frontier orbital energy stabilization. The impact of orbital delocalization and aromaticity on dye reactivity is important, which could be attributed to the above fact. The study highlights the importance of ionic characteristics and solvation effects in photocatalytic dye degradation. • Statistical correlation of quantum descriptors and degradation kinetics of dyes. • Differing delocalization trends in cationic and anionic dyes. • Hydration alters aromaticity and reactivity of cationic vs anionic dyes differently.
Bioleaching as an Eco-Friendly Nano-Factory for Sustainable Inorganic Waste Management: Current Advancements, Challenges, and Opportunities Adhish Jaiswal, S. Irudhaya Raj, Adegoke Isiaka Adetunji, Latifa Negadi, Sangeeta Singh, Kaniki Tumba, Indra Bahadur, Imran Uddin Chemistryopen, 2025 Inorganic waste management and metal recovery technology pose significant challenges to the global research community and policymakers. Bioleaching is an economical, eco‐friendly, and sustainable technology used for extracting metals and nanoparticles from inorganic waste streams, including e‐waste, fly ash, ore, spent batteries, and petroleum catalysts. Valuable metals are recovered from these waste materials by microbial action. Bioleaching occurs by redoxolysis, acidolysis, and complexolysis processes. The present review provides insights into global trends and hazards of e‐waste while also discussing the bioleaching of metals and nanoparticles from various inorganic wastes. In addition, the review focuses on the mechanistic pathway of the bioleaching process and computational aspects, such as the response surface method employed for enhanced recovery of metals from solid waste materials. Various physicochemical and biological parameters influencing metal bioleaching, as well as economic impacts and challenges affecting the bioleaching of metals from solid wastes, are discussed.
Flower-like morphological trigonal tellurium (t-te): A simple Wet-Chemical preparation approach to obtain semiconducting material Aarti Saini, Kisturi Dhanwant, Khemchand Dewangan, Ramalingam Thirumoorthi, Adhish Jaiswal, Indra Bahadur, Faruq Mohammad, Ahmed Abdullah Soleiman Results in Materials, 2023 Flower-like microstructured trigonal tellurium ( t -Te) was prepared by a simple solution-based strategy with the reaction of 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene (HCp*) and TeCl 4 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) under reflux condition. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy techniques confirmed the phase purity and morphology of the synthesized sample. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis provides evidence for forming elemental Te, viz, Te (0). Also, XPS analysis indicates the presence of a higher oxidation state, i.e., Te(IV), which may be due to the formation of an ultrathin layer of TeO 2 on the surface of the elemental t -Te microstructure. According to the synthetic strategy, higher oxidation is due to the surface oxidation of Te (0) to Te(IV) while washing the sample. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) technique further supports the presence of Te–O bonds on the surface of t -Te. The semiconducting behavior of the prepared elemental t -Te microstructure was confirmed by obtaining a positive Hall coefficient ( R H ) value of 4.98 × 10 3 cm 3 C −1 . In addition, the resistivity (conductivity) value, i.e., 1.05 × 10 2 Ω cm (9.52 × 10 −4 Ω −1 cm −1 ) is calculated using Hall-effect measurement.
