SUMAN KALYAN PANJA completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Calcutta in the year 2012. He was again awarded Ph.D. in Education by Assam University, Silchar in 2023. At present Dr. Panja is working as an assistant professor in the Department of Education, at Assam University, Silchar. His areas of research interest include MOOC, technology-enhanced learning, higher education, professional development, science education, and organic chemistry.

Synthesis of 3-aminomethylidenechroman-2-carboxamides by a Sequential One-pot Three Component Reaction and by Post-Passerini Condensation Modification Jaydip Ghosh, Suman Kalyan Panja, Sourav Maiti, Pritam Biswas, Tapas Sarkar,, Chandrakanta Bandyopadhyay Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry, 2016 3‐Arylaminomethylidenechroman‐2‐carboxamide has been synthesized by a one‐pot three component reaction among 3‐formylchromone, aromatic amine, and cyclohexyl isocyanide. 3‐(N‐alkylsubstitued/unsubstituted)aminomethylidenechroman‐2‐carboxamides were synthesized by heating Passerini products derived from chromone‐3‐carbaldehyde with different aliphatic primary amines. The products obtained from the reactions of aliphatic primary amines readily form chromeno[2,3‐c]pyrrole when heated in acetic acid. Bischromanones have also been synthesized using this methodology.
Synthesis of furocoumarins and biscoumarins by an isocyanide-induced multicomponent reaction: Isocyanide as a masked amine Suman Kalyan Panja, Jaydip Ghosh, Sourav Maiti, Chandrakanta Bandyopadhyay Journal of Chemical Research, 2012 The three-component reaction involving chromone-3-carbaldehyde, 4-hydroxycoumarin and cyclohexyl isocyanide produces furocoumarin and biscoumarin derivatives. Formation of the latter compound seems to involve cyclohexylamine. Cyclohexyl isocyanide was found to act as a masked source of cyclohexylamine.
Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of 1-benzopyrano[2,3-b]pyrrolo[2,3-d] pyridines: A microwave-accelerated intramolecular [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of azomethine ylide Sourav Maiti, T. M. Lakshmykanth, Suman Kalyan Panja, Ranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ayan Datta, Chandrakanta Bandyopadhyay Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry, 2011 Regio‐ and stereoselective syntheses of tetracyclic compounds having chromone, pyrrolidine, and piperidine rings have been accomplished by an intramolecular [3+2] cycloaddition reaction involving azomethine ylide. The reactions were carried out thermally as well as by irradiation with microwave. The latter process accelerates the reaction. Synthesis of 6,8-diarylimino-7H-pyrano[3,2-c:5,6-c'] dicoumarins; chemoselective hydrolysis of the ether-and imino-functions Sourav Maiti, Suman Kalyan Panja, Chandrakanta Bandyopadhyay Journal of Chemical Research, 2011 POCl3-induced dehydration of 3,3'-methylenedi(2-arylamino-4 H-chromen-4-ones) gives 6,8-diarylimino-7 H-pyrano[3,2- c:5,6- c’]dicoumarins, which undergo chemoselective hydrolysis of the imino function to form 7 H-pyrano[3,2- c:5,6- c’]dicoumarins by heating with HCl in methanol However, cleavage of the ether function occurs upon heating in acetic acid to give 3,3'-methylenedi(2-arylamino-4 H-chromen-4-ones).

Drew, Chandrakanta Bandyopadhyay Journal of Chemical Research, 2011 On stirring an equimolar mixture of 4-oxo-4 H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde, ninhydrin and cyclohexyl isocyanide in CH2Cl2-MeOH (7:1) at room temperature produces 3-cyclohexylimino-1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1,3-dihydro-9H-furo[3,4-b]chromen-9-one which on hydrolysis produces 1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1 H-inden-2-yl)-1 H-furo[3,4- b]chromene-3,9-dione. The structure of the latter compound was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction.
