Tree species distribution analysis for eco forest city development in Medan Belawan Subdistrict, North Sumatra, Indonesia Suranto Suranto, Rahmawaty Rahmawaty, Isnen Fitri, Luthfi Hakim, Abdul Rauf, Delvian Delvian, Mehmet Cetin E3s Web of Conferences, 2025 Medan Belawan Subdistrict, a coastal area of Medan City, faces increasing urbanization pressures that threaten the sustainability of green open spaces (GOS), particularly mangrove ecosystems. This study aims to map the composition and spatial distribution of tree species in GOS, analyze community structure using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′), Simpson dominance index (D), and evenness index (1−D), and propose a contextual Eco Forest City (EFC) model for coastal urban environments. Data were gathered through a comprehensive tree census (DBH ≥ 20 cm) in terrestrial GOS and plot sampling in mangrove areas, with spatial analysis used to examine species distribution, dominance, and green–blue connectivity. The results revealed that 72.02% of the 218 GOS units were mangrove areas, with Avicennia marina dominating at 48.17% and a density of 668 ind/ha. The community indices indicated moderate diversity (H′ = 1.65), high dominance (D = 0.232), and moderate evenness (1−D = 0.72). The proposed EFC model emphasizes the protection of mangrove ecosystems, enrichment with adaptive species, diversification of terrestrial corridors, and the creation of vegetated bioswales to enhance green–blue connectivity. These strategies provide a scientific basis for sustainable, climate-adaptive coastal urban planning in Indonesia.
Resilient Ecotourism and Community Well-Being: A PLS-SEM Approach in Bukit Lawang Hetty Claudia Nainggolan, Satia Negara, Isnen Fitri, Agus Purwoko International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning, 2025 Nature-based tourism in developing countries is increasingly vulnerable to environmental disruptions, socio-economic shocks, and institutional fragility. This study proposes and empirically validates a conceptual model of resilient ecotourism development aimed at enhancing community well-being in Bukit Lawang, Indonesia. The model integrates four key constructs: ecotourism development, tourism resilience, community-based governance, and community well-being.Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 150 local stakeholders and analyzed with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).The results confirm that ecotourism development significantly improves community well-being both directly and indirectly through tourism resilience, with substantial explanatory power (R =0.652).Community-based governance also contributes to resilience and equitable outcomes, although with a smaller direct effect. These findings highlight the strategic importance of integrating adaptive capacity and inclusive governance into sustainable tourism planning. The model offers practical insights for policymakers and tourism managers in fragile ecotourism destinations.
Factors Influencing the Opening of Regional Shipping Routes in the Aceh Region to Enhance Regional Development and Global Connectivity Taharuddin, Isnen Fitri, Badaruddin, Satia Negara Lubis Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2025 The strategic importance of shipping lanes in the development of the Aceh region is crucial. The shipping routes between districts significantly impact both local and international trade volumes. However, the limited shipping network in Aceh poses challenges for exporting natural resource products by sea. The potential of Sabang harbor as an international transshipment port could greatly facilitate trade and enhance the international shipping network. Additionally, feeder and collector ports in other regions of Aceh will further support the operations of Sabang harbor. The study aims to identify factors and strategy for developing the hinder regional connectivity in order to enhance global connectivity. Data collection methods included a literature review, observations, and interviews with academics and local government officials, which were analyzed using a SWOT framework. The findings indicate that barriers to establishing new shipping lines in the Aceh region include inadequate port infrastructure, the untapped potential of the hinterland, limited human resources, and the need for local government support. One of the future development strategies is to build dry ports on islands and mainland areas and utilise cargo trains. Future research should focus on obtaining detailed information about each factor that hinders regional connectivity to make a more significant impact.

Changeability, adaptability, and resiliency of Indonesian historic area: A case of Kesawan, Medan S W Ginting, Isnen Fitri Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 This paper aims to analyse changes in buildings and plots in a historical area in Medan, Indonesia, in 1875, 1945, and 2023. Change is discussed from the aspect of physical and functional change. The ability of an environment to change and adapt is in line with the concepts of resilience and sustainability. This paper shows that buildings change functionally from hotels and clubhouses to banks. Plots became smaller as previous plots were divided into smaller parts separated by new streets or alleys. This pattern was more pronounced in large, square-shaped plots. Factors that drove these changes were influenced by political factors (lack of government regulation and social movement against Dutch colonialism) and economic factors (Kesawan’s role as a business center).
The Design Strategy for Youth Center in Medan Using Combination of Green Building and Contemporary Tropical Architectural Concept S Devira, I Fitri Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 Medan currently lacks a Youth Centre, which forces young people to use inappropriate facilities. Therefore, the government should construct a facility to address the issue. The government prioritizes building facilities that are inexpensive to operate and maintain. The study investigates a youth centre concept in Medan by combining the green building concept and contemporary tropical architecture achieved through literature studies, interviews, and the distribution of a questionnaire to local experts and young people. The paper highlights the advantages of the green building concept and the design strategy that contributes to reducing negative impacts on the natural environment by using less energy, renewable energy sources, and environmentally friendly materials. Based on the results of interviews and questionnaires, the design should provide opportunities for young people to engage in both academic and non-academic activities that cater to their talents and interests. The research found eco-friendly technologies such as a hybrid cooler air conditioning system, solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, floating boxes, and lighting devices that utilize motion sensors. Furthermore, it was combined to feature contemporary tropical architecture, with an overhanging roof, a double facade facing north and west, and the longest side facing south.
The Potentiality of Eco-Library Design in Medan City Towards Sustainability Development E Febriyanti, I Fitri Iop Conference Series Earth and Environmental Science, 2024 Sustainable development has become an important concern over the last three decades. The Eco-library design concept has gained popularity due to its environmentally friendly approach. However, the government and citizens of Medan must continue discussing this matter. The library serves as an information hub, significantly promoting sustainable development. This study investigates the benefits of the green building concept and the design strategy for the Eco-Library in Medan City through literature reviews, interviews, and questionnaires distributed to local visitors and experts. In the past, the conventional library used only an air conditioner to maintain its collection, contributing to high electricity expenses. By analysing the context of climate of Medan city, this paper demonstrates how the concept of Eco-Library can reduce negative environmental impacts through the use of sustainable materials, renewable energy sources, solar panels, rainwater harvesting, floating boxes concept, motion-sensor lighting systems, and eco-friendly air conditioners. Contemporary tropical architecture was utilized in the design of this Eco-Library, which includes an overhanging roof and a double facade-oriented east and west, with the longest side facing north and south. In addition, encouraging the use of rooftop gardens in Medan can help reduce indoor heat and air pollution.
URBAN REGENERATION AND PUBLIC SPACE: LESSONS ON EARLY INTERVENTION OF COMMUNITY-BASED MICRO-PLANNING Seng Boon Lim, Nur Wildaniah Syafiqah Mohd Razib, Imam Mukhlis, Na’asah Nasrudin, Isnen Fitri Planning Malaysia, 2024 Documenting lessons learned from revitalization projects through community-based micro-planning is crucial in developing countries, as it lacks mainstream urban regeneration recognition. This research aimed to evaluate the early intervention of community gardening or urban farming initiatives under an urban regeneration project: the Special Area Action Plan Section 13, Petaling Jaya City, Malaysia. This single case study was investigated using the mixed-methods approach. In the quantitative approach, 200 samples were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. In the qualitative approach, eight interviews were conducted and analyzed via thematic analysis. The findings show that the respondents are sceptical about the awareness, safety infrastructure and support services, caretaker, and land ownership concerns surrounding the proposal for community gardening at the Sungai Penchala monsoon drain area. When revitalizing left-over urban public spaces, authorities are recommended to plan more awareness intervention campaigns, enhance safety infrastructure designs, provide policy support in appointing caretakers, and resolve land acquisition matters to realize and sustain the regeneration projects in the public interest. This study contributes lessons learned by auditing the early intervention urban regeneration initiatives in development plans, particularly in fourth-tier-community-based micro-planning in a developing country.
