  • Experimental investigation of mechanical properties of AA6063/ZrO2metal matrix composites
    S. Rajaram, P. Karthikeyan, T. Jaya Surya, K. Kaniskar, V. Pazhanivel
    Materials Today Proceedings, 2022
The experimental investigation of AA6063/ZrO 2 metal matrix composites was made by a stir casting method by differing the weight fraction of zirconium dioxide such as 0 wt%, 2 wt%, and 4 wt% and the mechanical properties are studied successfully through various test methods such as microhardness , tensile, and wear. The AA6063/ ZrO 2 metal matrix composites of hardness, UTS, and wear test specimens were prepared as per the ASTM standard. From the hardness and UTS test results, the maximum hardness of 71.0 HV, and the maximum ultimate strength of 168.384Mpa were obtained in the sample of AA6063 with 4 wt% ZrO 2 composites. A Pin-on-Disc wear test result revealed the lower wear rate of 2.5*10 -6 mg/m identified in the test sample of AA6063 with 4 wt% ZrO 2 composites. The morphology of AA6063/ ZrO 2 composites was studied with help of an SEM test and from its microstructure, uniformly distributed ZrO 2 particulates are identified.
  • Modeling and assessing of self-reconfigurable cleaning robot hTetro based on energy consumption

    Energies, 2019
The autonomous floor-cleaning self-reconfigurable robots have entered into the practical stage by establishing enhanced area coverage over the fixed morphology counterparts. Energy consumption during the self-reconfiguration, i.e., changing the shape of the robot from one form to another, becomes a primary focus in these robots that carry finite energy sources. In this paper, hTetro platform with two hinge dissections namely, Left–Left–Left (LLL) and Left–Left–Right (LLR) are modeled and assessed for the energy consumption during the reconfiguration. The geometry of the two dissections, its workspaces, and the set of inverse kinematics solutions for the seven forms are presented. The inverse dynamics using the Newton–Euler approach was adopted to calculate the wrench, i.e., forces and moments at the hinge joints, and subsequently assess the power consumed during the reconfigurations of two hinge dissections in the simulation. Extensive experiments were performed across the two assembled platforms to estimate the power consumption by logging the current data. The comparison was made with the simulation results. The results are particularly useful in the selection of reconfiguration with minimal energy consumption during the floor cleaning.

    Energies, 2019
hHoneycomb, a self-reconfigurable cleaning robot, is designed based on tiling theory, to overcome the significant challenges experienced by the fixed morphology cleaning robot. It consists of four regular hexagonal units and the units are connected by a planar revolute joint which helps in reconfiguration. This platform attains six distinct configurations (bar, bee, arch, wave, worm, and pistol) and these configurations have circular arcs and irregular concave and convex boundary that would help in accessing various obstacles in the cleaning space. This work addresses the mechanical design, system-level modeling, reconfiguration of the platform via hinged joint mechanism, mobility of the platform, polyhex based tiling set, and power consumption during reconfiguration. The strength of the mechanical structure is studied based on the structural analysis of the system using finite element method. Based on the natural frequency and deformation pattern, the proposed design is validated and proven to overcome structural failure and system resonance. The kinematics formulation of the platform during locomotion and dynamics of each block during reconfiguration are derived. The robotic system is modeled in Simscape multibody toolbox of Matlab and the mobility of the platform is studied using the numerical simulation. Based on the real-time current consumption of each joint during reconfiguration, the energy efficient configuration and tiling set are addressed.
  • Investigation on the effects of SiC particle addition in the weld zone during friction stir welding of Al 6351 alloy

International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2015
  • Evaluation of mechanical properties of friction stir welded Al 6351 aluminium alloy with reinforcement particles in the weld region
    P. Karthikeyan, K. Mahadevan
    Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Although friction stir welded joints of similar or dissimilar metals exhibit good mechanical properties, the nugget zone in the weld region usually shows a deviation in the properties from the rest of the region due to grain coarsening. The effect of grain coarsening at the nugget zone is further aggravated when the friction stir welded joints are subjected to annealing treatment resulting to a wide variation in the properties. In order to overcome the above problem, in the present study an attempt has been made to retard grain coarsening at the nugget zone by the addition of suitable ceramic particles in the nugget zone during welding. SiC particles of 12 microns size is added at the nugget zone in the weld region during friction stir welding of Al 6351 aluminium alloy. The test results reveal that the addition of reinforcement particles resulted in the improvement of uniformity of properties across the weld region both in the as-weld and in the annealed condition.
  • Study of relation between welding and hardening parameters of friction stir welded Aluminium 2024 alloy
    P. Karthikeyan, D. Thiagarajan, K. Mahadevan
    Procedia Engineering, 2014
This work focuses on studying the relationship between the welding and hardening parameters of friction stir welded Al 2024 alloy. The experiments were conducted using Box Behnken design of Response surface methodology. The conducted experiments were then subjected to mechanical testing such as ultimate tensile strength and izod impact tests. Then the identified Least Square hardening model was compared with the welding parameters to explain the relationship between them. The Statistical software “Minitab 16” was used to generate models of the responses. This relation between the identified models of the responses with the welding parameters helps to predict the mechanical property behavior of the friction stir welded Al 2024 alloy. This prediction helps to understand the behavior of the alloy during friction stir welding thereby minimizing the experimental cost and time in the future.
