Advanced Electrolytes Based on Salts of Electroactive Metals in Organic Solvents for High-Performance Supercapacitors Vivek Chaudhry, Joginder Singh, Ahmad Umar, Ahmed A. Ibrahim, Fehaid Mohammed Alsubaie, Sotirios Baskoutas Energy Technology, 2026 Supercapacitors have emerged as a critical energy storage technology due to their exceptional power density, rapid charge–discharge kinetics, and long cycle life. Despite their advantages, enhancing their energy density remains a key challenge for broader applications in electric vehicles, renewable energy integration, and portable electronics. This study presents a novel electrolyte formulation comprising nickel chloride (NiCl 2 ) in ethyl alcohol and cobalt nitrate (Co(NO 3 ) 2 ) in acetone, designed to improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. The proposed electrolytes exhibit remarkable enhancements in specific capacitance, with NiCl 2 ‐based systems achieving 123 F/g with TiO 2 nanoparticles and 138.5 F/g with CuO nanoparticles, while Co(NO 3 ) 2 ‐based systems demonstrate 127 F/g and 131 F/g, respectively. Furthermore, the specific energy (SE) reaches 76.2 Wh/kg and 67.2 Wh/kg for NiCl 2 electrolytes, and 70 Wh/kg and 72.5 Wh/kg for Co(NO 3 ) 2 electrolytes, highlighting their potential for high‐energy storage applications. These findings suggest that the integration of transition metal salts in organic solvents can significantly boost supercapacitor performance by optimizing ion transport and redox activity. The study underscores the importance of advanced electrolyte engineering in overcoming existing limitations in energy storage systems.
Smartphone-integrated paper sensor strips for rapid and on-site detection of heavy metal ions in environmental water samples Sumit Malik, Joginder Singh, Ahmad Umar, Ahmed A. Ibrahim, Sotirios Baskoutas Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A Chemistry, 2026 The detection of heavy metal ions is critical for environmental monitoring, public health, and industrial safety due to their toxicological and bioaccumulative properties. Traditional analytical techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), offer high sensitivity and specificity but are limited by their reliance on expensive instrumentation, specialized expertise, and laboratory infrastructure, making them impractical for real-time, on-site applications. To address these limitations, this study presents a smartphone-assisted paper-based sensor strip (WFP-113 and WFP-4) for the simultaneous detection of copper (Cu(II)), chromium (Cr(VI)), zinc (Zn(II)), and manganese (Mn(II)) ions in water samples. The sensor employs chromogenic reagents that produce distinct colorimetric responses upon metal ion complexation, enabling visual and quantitative analysis via smartphone imaging and digital processing. Key analytical parameters, including linear detection range, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), reproducibility, and selectivity, were systematically optimized. The achieved LODs for WFP-113 and WFP-4 were 0.42, 0.32, 0.79, 0.30 mg L −1 and 0.30, 0.26, 0.72, 0.28 mg L −1 for Cu(II), Cr(VI), Zn(II), and Mn(II), respectively, meeting regulatory standards for water quality assessment. Validation using spiked water samples demonstrated high accuracy and reliability compared to AAS, confirming the sensor's applicability in field-based monitoring. The proposed system offers significant advantages, including low cost, rapid analysis, portability, and ease of fabrication, while smartphone integration bridges the gap between qualitative and quantitative analysis. This innovation holds substantial promise for environmental monitoring, point-of-care diagnostics, and resource-limited settings, providing a sustainable and scalable solution for heavy metal detection.
Electrochemical detection of atrazine using a zinc methylimidazolate framework with molecular docking insights Simranjeet Singh, Pavithra N., Radhika Varshney, Ashutosh Panchal, Praveen C. Ramamurthy, Joginder Singh, Nabila Shehata Scientific Reports, 2025 There is increased interest on the challenges of health, safety and ecological sustainability posed by herbicide misuse, which highlights the urgent need for the production of an effiecnt and applicable sensor for easy, quick, and user-friendly on-site detection of herbicide residues. In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor was developed using Zinc methylimidazolate synthesized via an environmentally benign method for the detection of atrazine (ATZ), a widely used herbicide and known environmental contaminant. The green-synthesized Zinc methylimidazolate material exhibited excellent electrochemical activity, enabling sensitive and selective detection of ATZ. Complementary molecular docking studies were employed to explore the interaction dynamics between ATZ and the Zinc methylimidazolate framework, revealing a favorable binding affinity that supports the experimental observations. The sensor achieved a detection limit of 1.73 μM, underscoring its potential for real-world monitoring of pesticide residues in aqueous environments. The combined use of experimental and computational approaches provides a comprehensive understanding of the sensing mechanism, while also highlighting the value of sustainable materials in analytical applications. This work positions Zinc methylimidazolate as a promising candidate for the development of next-generation green sensors for environmental surveillance.
Statistical optimization of process variables for improved poly(ethylene terephthalate) plastic degradation by a rhizospheric bacterial consortium Vaishali Dhaka, Simranjeet Singh, Raman Rao, Shashank Garg, Jastin Samuel, Nadeem A. Khan, Praveen C. Ramamurthy, Joginder Singh Scientific Reports, 2025 The current study focuses on the poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) powder degradation potential of a rhizobacterial consortium screened from the rhizosphere of plants growing at plastic-polluted sites. The rhizobacterial consortium were screened and ability of PET powder degradation was studied up to 18 days. For observing the efficiency of degradation, all three rhizobacterial strains with highest percentage of degradation were combined to formulate the consortium. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process variables. The combinations demonstrating highest weight reduction percentage for PET were selected for further degradation studies. The changes in the structure and surfaces that occurred after biodegradation on the plastic were observed through SEM and FTIR analysis. The obtained results showed the disappearance and elongation of the peak, signifying that the rhizobacterial consortium could modify the PET plastic. The weight reduction percentage of PET powder (300 µm) was 71.12% at optimized conditions (29.8 °C, 7.02 pH and 1 g/L carbon source). The mathematical model developed through RSM is found to be significant (P < 0.05), and optimization and validation experiments were also well correlated for the process.
Cyanobacterial Membranes Under Extreme Conditions Prabhjot Singh Jassal, Tusha Yadav, Japmuskan Kaur, Joginder Singh Cyanobacterial Response to Extreme Environments A Molecular Understanding for A Sustainable Future, 2025 This chapter explores the adaptive mechanisms of cyanobacteria in harsh environments, focusing on their functional and structural responses to such conditions like high salinity, UV radiation, desiccation, and temperature change. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms which display incredible adaptability, enabling them to alter in extreme environmental conditions by modulating their outer and inner membranes. This adaptability includes changing their lipid composition and the production of defense proteins like heat shock proteins and cold shock proteins. These features allow them to flourish in harsh conditions like cold regions and hot springs. They can change their membranal fluidity, enhancing their photosynthesis performance and even carrying out nitrogen fixation in nitrogen-deficient environments. Because of these capabilities, cyanobacteria are one of the major global oxygen producers and play a crucial role in ecosystem stability, and have various biotechnological applications, such as bioremediation and biofuel production. Basic understanding of these processes displays insights into microbial survival approaches and their potential for apprised environmental challenges.
