    The utilisation of the Danube as a waterway has always fallen short of its potential. This is mainly attributable to the geographical characteristics of the river. The Danube’s water flow is uneven, with frequent low water levels in late summer and autumn. Another disadvantage is that it has few navigable tributaries, of which the Rivers Drava, Sava and the Tisza are of such size and flow that navigation is theoretically possible. The development of navigation on the Danube has always been hampered by the fact that it reaches the sea via a delta estuary, and the navigability of the individual branches could only be ensured by regular maintenance. Since the opening of the Danube-Black Sea Canal in 1984, Constanza has been steadily developing and is now the sea gateway to the Danube. In recent years, Constanza has become the largest grain port in Europe, and the traffic on the Danube-Black Sea Canal has steadily increased, reducing the importance of the Danube Delta shipping routes and ports. In the changed geopolitical situation, it was precisely the cooperation between the ports along the estuary, the canal and Constanza, and the increase of the Danube fleet’s transport capacity that became necessary. The management of the problems of Danube navigation was put in a new perspective.
  • From attractive centres to deserted hinterlands. Spatial differences in population dynamics in the border regions of Central Europe, 2014-2020

    fggen.Eltr vltozsok figyelhetk meg a vizsglt terlet keleti -egyben az EU klshatrn s azon schengeni hatroknl, ahol a rgi tagorszgok, illetve a 2004 utn csatlakozottak tallkoznak.The European Union's development policy has managed to reduce inequalities between countries in many areas but has not helped the peripheral and rural areas of Central European countries to recover.Inequalities between regions were increasing, in terms of economic, social and access to public services, and marginalisation is persisting in many regions, particularly in border areas.For this reason, it is particularly important to examine the background of the current processes in these areas, to explore their origins and, as a first step in this analysis, to identify the causes of population trends.The characteristics of the border regions: negative demographic characteristics, lower economic performance than the national average; these studies have long been a focus of regional science.Different perspectives can be used to approach and explain the differences arising from the border situation: transport, settlement geography, networks analysis, economic development, aid policy, development policy, population dynamics, living standards, etc.In their study, the authors examined the regional differences in population dynamics at NUTS 3 territorial level between 2014 and 2020 in the Interreg Central Europe programme area.The analyses of the study have highlighted that peripheral regions have a diverse demographic profile, depending on the type of borders.Different dynamics can be observed at the eastern border of the study area -which is also the external border of the EU -and at the Schengen borders where the old member states and those that joined after 2004 meet.

  • Accessibility of Major Central and Eastern European Cities in Danube Cruise Tourism

    This article aims to provide an insight into the largely under-researched issue of river cruise tourism on the Danube through an explorative analysis. The focus is on attraction accessibility in the context of the three major cities of pan-European Corridor VII. (Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade), based on the adaptation of the accessibility model by Geurs & van Wee (2004). Expert and stakeholder interviews have been carried out and analyzed to understand the general problems and suggested solutions of port and attraction accessibility of these cities. Results indicate that accessibility is influenced not only by transport components: rethinking temporal and individual components as well as developing land-use and transport components may be relevant to overcoming key issues like low water level, overtourism, reliability of services, urban traffic congestion and parking problems on roads. Our research results can serve as a source for urban and transport development strategies and summarizes product development proposals of the members of the tourism sector for cruise tourism on the Danube to ensure accessibility.
