Assessment of induction furnace steel slag as a potential river sand substitute for the production of standard concrete Akash Prava Panda, Biswajit Mohapatra, Sai Sarthak Das, Satyazit Dash, Chinmay Kumar Sethy Structural Concrete, 2025 The global construction industry consumes about 50 billion tons of sand every year and in the last two decades; the consumption has tripled in amount. As a critical concern, continuous research is in progress to examine numerous materials as alternatives of river sand. This study focuses to completely replace river sand by induction furnace steel slag (IFSS) for producing standard concrete of M25 grade without compromising the mechanical strength of the resulting mix. One hundred and fifty millimeter sized cubes and 150 mm × 300 mm sized cylinders were casted using Portland slag cement (PSC) and Portland pozzolana cement (PPC) as per Indian standard provisions. Laboratory tests were performed to assess workability, hardened density, compressive strength (7 and 28 days) and splitting tensile strength (28 days). At 100% replacement level, the obtained values of (PSC, PPC) specimens are: slump values (35, 40 mm); hardened density (2730, 2790 kg/m3); compressive strength (34.83, 38.10 MPa) and splitting tensile strength (3.03, 3.32 MPa). This research will act as a game‐changer in the construction industry towards a global sustainable future.
A sustainable solution for lean barriers through a fuzzy DEMATEL methodology with a case study from the Indian manufacturing industry Biswajit Mohapatra, Sushanta Tripathy, Deepak Singhal International Journal of Lean Six Sigma, 2023 Purpose As the COVID-19 epidemic ravages the world in the fourth industrial revolution era, the manufacturing sector faces its worst situation in a century. Lean philosophy, renowned as a “warrior philosophy,” can be an able rescuer to these industries. This study aims to identify the hurdles to lean strategy implementation and conduct an analysis to provide cognizance to policymakers, practitioners and decision-makers. Design/methodology/approach This study aims to identify the obstacles that obstruct lean implementation into seven primary barriers/components, with the fuzzy DEMATEL approach being used to evaluate the critical factors as well as the cause and effect factors among them. Expert opinions are sought to obtain the relevant data for evaluation purposes. Findings The results reveal that a firm should focus on firm cultural conflict scenario, resources–responses incapability, improve on suppliers’ attitude and execute a proper planning and logistics equation to alleviate the hindrances of implementing lean. As these causal factors influence the effect factors, namely, top management vision, management–employee relationship and human resource building, focusing on them automatically improves the effect factors; thus, the surge to overcome resistance to lean implementation is alleviated. Practical implications This research aids in identifying and analyzing lean implementation issues in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. The observations, results and insights drawn can act as a guiding force to rupture the resistance envelope covering the domain of lean implementation and possibly reinstating industries to survive and excel in the business post-COVID era. Originality/value This research introduces barriers to lean implementation in a unique way, as it articulates all sections of an industry and group the barriers based on the classification. It further prioritizes the barriers for their importance in the Indian industrial scenario. This would help the industry professionals and managers access the barriers and generate insight on how and where to start implementing lean.
Sustainability in Indian manufacturing sector: an empirical study on challenges Biswajit Mohapatra, Aneesh Kuruvilla, Deepak Singhal, Sushanta Tripathy International Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering, 2023 Sustainability is an inexorably pertinent issue in all nations for building a cleaner, greener and prosperous industry around the globe. The concerned research is to build a model delineating the factors affecting sustainability and their degree of hindrance in the Indian industrial paradigm. The authors, through extensive literature review and expert opinions, have identified the factors affecting sustainability in India and then have attempted to structure a model by taking the seven major factors as constructs to the central construct called sustainability challenges. The degree of hindrance has been elucidated in the model and suitable inferences having a high future impact are drawn as a consequence of this rigorous effort. The multivariate statistical analysis method of structural equation modelling (SEM) has been utilised to capture the solution of the problem. The results of the research have a meaningful set of insights about the Indian chapter of sustainability in industries.
Role of Industry 4.0 in manufacturing: an exhaustive literature review and future prospects Biswajit Mohapatra, Adarsh Rajpal, Akash Tarasia, Deepak Singhal, Sushanta Tripathy International Journal of Process Management and Benchmarking, 2023 Industry 4.0 focuses on connecting the real world with the virtual world in real-time to increase production, boost productivity and increase growth exponentially all the while understanding and controlling every aspect of this production chain. The paper mainly illustrates the current advancements made in Industry 4.0 technologies and the possibility as well as the extent of its improvement in the near future while providing insights into the salient features of Industry 4.0 as well as comprehending and accomplishing the prerequisites of the same. A literature review was conducted systematically by taking into consideration the studies and findings of 222 academic articles. The paper explains most of the idolatry papers from many luminary researchers in the field based on the key components of Industry 4.0 diversely and descriptively along with graphs depicting the popularity of a trend for each key component of Industry 4.0.
Challenges of sustainability in Indian manufacturing sector: a critical review Aneesh Kuruvilla, Deepak Singhal, Sushanta Tripathy, Biswajit Mohapatra International Journal of Process Management and Benchmarking, 2022 Sustainability has become the critical constraint in any industry around the globe. It defines the new measuring standard that would help to improve the social, economic and environmental aspects in an industry. The paper intends to bring into limelight the various challenges/factors/barriers affecting the implementation of sustainability in manufacturing industries of India. The factors have been articulated from a vast literature survey encompassing journals from 1994 to 2019. The research extends further to enquire practitioners, industry professionals and academicians in India through a close-ended questionnaire. The responses, when analysed, yielded 24 factors, which were identified as major hindrances to Indian context of sustainable manufacturing. Some of the major factors are product life cycle design and 6R. Each factor has been elucidated in the respective context. The authors have tried to classify these factors into seven major factor-groups affecting sustainable manufacturing. The results of the survey indicate that the 24 factors are hindrances or challenges to the Indian manufacturing sector. This research is a preliminary attempt to revolutionise the transformation of Indian manufacturing practices into sustainable ones.
