Income inequality and economic policy uncertainty as dual threats to environmental quality for achieving sustainable development goals Muhammad Farhan Asif, Mohd Helmi Ali, Sook Fern Yeo, Kay Hooi Keoy, Afshan Hamid, Qasim Raza Syed, Ahsan Anwar Discover Sustainability, 2026 Economies facing persistent income inequalities and low environmental quality find it more difficult to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The literature is enriched with ecological studies and the factors related to this, but the impact of income inequalities in the sphere of uncertain economic policy remains underexplored. Keeping in view the significance of the nexus between income inequality and environmental quality, the present study looks into certain conditions prevailing in the fast-growing BRICS economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, over the period from 1990 to 2020. The study constructed two relevant models that examine the effects of income inequality (IIE) and the combined effect of income inequality and economic policy uncertainty (IIE × EPU) on CO2 emissions, with renewable energy consumption (REC) and economic growth (EG) as controlled determinants. To assess the association between the study variables, the study used the panel quantile regression (PQR) technique, following the features of the data. The conclusions reached indicated that higher IIE leads to a rise in CO2 emissions across all quantiles (0.10–0.90) in both models, ranging from 0.409% to 0.679%, with high intensity in the lower quantiles. Interestingly, combining CO2 emissions with economic policy uncertainty offsets the deteriorating impact of IIE on the environmental quality, ranging from -0.094% to -0.065% across all the quantiles except at the lower quantile (0.10) and upper quantile (0.90). Moreover, the connections between EG and CO2 emissions do not support the presence of the EKC hypothesis in these economies. Keeping in view the outcomes, the study also crafted certain policy implications that align the study with several SDGs, like SDG 07, enhancing the use of affordable and clean energy, SDG 10, aiming at controlling inequalities in the societies, and SDG 13, focusing on climate action.
Rookie Independent Directors and Corporate Policies: Evidence from China Waqas Bin Khidmat, Sook Fern Yeo, Cheng Ling Tan Journal of Risk and Financial Management, 2026 In this study, we investigate how corporate policies are influenced by the presence of rookie independent directors (RIDs). We hypothesize that RIDs, due to their inexperience, impact corporate policies in ways that may amplify agency problems. Specifically, firms with RIDs demonstrate higher investment in R&D and capital expenditure, increased leverage (both short- and long-term), enhanced liquidity (cash holdings and working capital), and elevated risk-taking, while their presence leads to a conservative payout policy. Using a sample of Chinese-listed firms from 2008 to 2022, our findings confirm these predictions. Additional analyses reveal that RIDs’ effects are more pronounced in high-CEO-power environments, where their limited governance capabilities may align with managerial interests, exacerbating financial risks. This study contributes to the corporate governance literature by integrating upper echelon and agency theories, shedding light on the dual-edged role of RIDs in shaping corporate outcomes.
Understanding purchase intention in SARS-CoV-2 medication industry: moderating roles of technological competency Long Kim, Sook Fern Yeo International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing, 2026 Purpose SARS-CoV-2 medications are produced to cure and prevent COVID-19 patients from heavily ill. However, this medical industry cannot maintain its business sustainability and success if there is uncertainty about consumer purchase intention because purchase intention has significant associations with actual product purchases. Therefore, all medical firms have to investigate factors influencing consumers’ intention to purchase the SARS-CoV-2 medications. This study aims to examine how perceived quality, consumer trust and perceived quality influence purchase intention and technological competency as the moderators. Design/methodology/approach A total of 800 patients whom COVID-19 previously infected were invited to join the survey via questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using a path analysis technique. Findings Results indicated that consumer trust was influenced by perceived quality and country of origin. Furthermore, purchase intention was influenced by consumer trust and perceived quality, except for the country of origin. Finally, technological competency strengthened the relationships between perceived quality and purchase intention and between consumer trust and purchase intention. Originality/value The exploration of this research provided more knowledge regardless of how all related factors influenced consumer purchase decisions. Thus, this enables the related industry to understand their consumers’ insights, which helps them create an effective marketing campaign to introduce their products to the market.
Customer Brand Preferences in the Age of AI: A Study of the Malaysian Banking Sector Kah Boon Lim, Sook Fern Yeo, Lay Sin Aw Yong, Cheng Ling Tan Icbim 2025 the 9th International Conference on Business and Information Management, 2026 The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in banking in Malaysia is becoming more and more prominent. The introduction of AI technology has increased the significance of digital transformation since it may completely change an industry and dictate which businesses succeed. This study mainly focusses on investigation of factors affecting bank customers' brand preferences. Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theory was employed in this study. The data of this study was collected from 201 respondents with knowledge of banking services related to artificial intelligence technology. The independent variables which are included in this study are interaction, information, accessibility and customization while brand experience act as the mediating variable. The dependent variable of this study is brand preference. Our result revealed that all hypotheses were supported. Based on the research findings, bank employees and employers should be mindful of interaction, information, accessibility and customization since these factors significantly influence brand experience and preference, which in turn influences the customers’ bank choosing. Additionally, the study's findings convey customers of banks instructive information and understanding. The outcomes help users comprehend the notion of AI systems and how they may help individuals achieve their desired degree of satisfaction by doing useful tasks.
Assessing Readiness for a National Health Insurance Scheme: A Malaysian Perspective Kah Boon Lim, Sook Fern Yeo, Cristal Li Ching Chai, Cheng Ling Tan Icbim 2025 the 9th International Conference on Business and Information Management, 2026 National health insurance plays a crucial role in safeguarding family well-being, promoting social equity, reducing out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare expenditures, and enhancing individuals' access to medical services. However, in Malaysia, a national health insurance scheme has yet to be implemented. Therefore, this study aims to examine the factors influencing consumers' intention to adopt a national health insurance scheme. Additionally, it seeks to assess the level of adoption of such a scheme in Malaysia. The factors considered in this study include awareness, religiosity, relative advantage, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control regarding the adoption of a national health insurance scheme. A quantitative research approach was employed, with a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 220 targeted respondents. The collected data was entered into SPSS and subsequently analysed using SmartPLS software. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for government agencies and businesses seeking to promote the adoption of a national health insurance scheme. Finally, the study's implications are discussed to offer relevant recommendations for stakeholders involved in policy development and implementation.
Swipe, Select, Satisfy: How GrabFood App Quality Drives Consumer Mobile Purchase Behaviour? Sook Fern Yeo, Cheng Ling Tan, Kah Boon Lim, Xing An Kuiek, Long Kim, Stany Lian Fong Wee Icbim 2025 the 9th International Conference on Business and Information Management, 2026 This paper explores how the quality of the GrabFood delivery app influences consumers’ intention to make purchases online. The rise of food delivery apps has changed the way people order meals, offering a level of convenience that benefits both customers and restaurants. By focusing on GrabFood, this study aims to understand how app related features can be improved to better meet user expectations and enhance service quality. Four factors are examined in this context: perceived usefulness, information quality, perceived risk, and trust. A total of 238 individuals responded to an online survey, but only 202 valid responses from users who had used the GrabFood app were included in the final analysis. The data was carefully analysed to examine how these four factors relate to online purchase intentions. The insights gained from this research may be useful not only for GrabFood and similar service providers but also for policymakers and restaurant operators aiming to improve customer experience in the growing food delivery sector.
Going Cashless on Campus: A Study of E-Wallet Adoption Drivers Among Malaysian University Students Sook Fern Yeo, Cheng Ling Tan, Kah Boon Lim, Yi Qin Lee, Anushia Chelvarayan, Irene Yoke Chu Leong Icbim 2025 the 9th International Conference on Business and Information Management, 2026 The fast uptake of mobile financial technology has played a significant role in making e-wallets a critical component of digital transformation in Malaysia. This study approaches the significant predictors of continued use of e-wallet for university students and its effects on the adoption of e-wallet technology in the context of Malaysia, a digitally active segment of society that is influential to the development of a cashless campus. Based on perceived ease of use, perceived security and privacy, promotion benefit, and social influence, the research utilised a quantitative method of analysis with survey data collected for 200 university students in southern Malaysia. Relationships between the variables were analysed by structural equation modelling and Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis (IPMA). The findings imply that perceived privacy and security and promotion benefits are more important than perceived ease of use or social influence to retain e-wallet usage among students. The findings have practical implications for providers of e-wallets and university decision makers to build a secure application and to provide incentives that are incentivizing. It also adds to the mobile commerce research literature as it directs attention from the adoption to continued use of m-services in a higher education setting.
