  • Virtualizing of Team Processes and Team Performance
Henrique Takashi Adati Tomomitsu, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
    Informatics, 2026
This study explores the virtualizability of team processes and their implications for team performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main research question was: What is the effect of the ease of virtualizing team processes on the outcomes of teams that have shifted from in-person to virtual work? A survey method was employed, and the data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Building on the frameworks based on literature review, the study defined sensory, relational, and synchronization requirements, along with the mechanisms of reach and representation. Results show that sensory requirements negatively influence the virtualizability of team processes, while relational and synchronization requirements do not have a statistically significant impact. Although the mechanisms of reach and representation do not moderate the relationships between constructs, they do have a direct positive effect on susceptibility to virtualization. Contrary to initial expectations, virtualizability positively affects both tangible and emotional outcomes, indicating that cohesion and satisfaction can be maintained—or even improved—in virtual teams. These findings enhance the theoretical understanding of team processes and virtualizability and offer practical insights for managing distributed teams.
  • Partial least squares structural equation modeling usage in production engineering research: a systematic literature review
Renato de Oliveira Moraes, Hugo Martinelli Watanuki
    Gestao E Producao, 2025
Despite the increasing usage of Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) by the scientific community, there is a series of misconceptions and incorrect usage of the technique reported in the literature. This study conducted a critical review of PLS-SEM usage on Production Engineering Research in Brazil and provided guidelines for its correct usage. A systematic literature review approach was adopted, focusing on papers published in the main Production Engineering Research outlets in Brazil. In total, 49 papers were carefully analyzed by the authors. The main issues identified while reviewing the selected papers can be categorized into four main groups: conceptual design; model operationalization; data analysis; and presentation of results. The study also suggests that realizing the full potential provided by PLS-SEM depends on a series of proper decisions made at the early stages of the research process. The paper concludes with guidelines for researchers to avoid the most common issues associated with using this technique in Production Engineering research.

  • First impressions matter: evaluating the importance of online reputation in social networking sites for initial trust in virtual work partners
Hugo Martinelli Watanuki, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
Aslib Journal of Information Management, 2024
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the practices that owners of public profiles in social networking sites can leverage to actively build online reputation and to evaluate the impact of the adoption of such practices on the initial formation of trust toward these individuals when they are presented as new virtual work partners.Design/methodology/approachA theoretical model was developed and an experiment with 233 participants was utilized to assess the model using partial least squares structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results suggest that individuals can build their online reputations in public profiles of social networking sites via a series of practices of self-disclosure of information and that the adoption of these practices has significant effects on the initial formation of trust toward the profile owner in virtual work contexts. Categorization mechanisms such as stereotyping, unit grouping and reputation categorization have been found to contribute to the initial formation of trust, both from an affect and cognition-based perspectives.Originality/valueLittle is known about the information disclosure practices in public profiles of social networking sites that new work partners can adopt to facilitate the formation of trust between them before they start working together. This study has contributed to the existing body of literature by clarifying these practices and the relative importance of online reputation to the initial formation of trust during the outset of a new virtual work relationship.

  • Team Dispersion, Emergent States, and Performance in Virtual IT Service Provisioning Teams
Hugo Martinelli Watanuki, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
International Journal of Information Systems in the Service Sector, 2022
Today, virtual teams composed by dispersed team members relying on computer-supported collaborative work are common in the information technology (IT) service provisioning industry. Despite the increasing interest in virtual team research, there is a limited understanding of a multidimensional view of team dispersion and its effect on the performance of virtual teams via the team´s socioemotional states. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of team distribution and variety of work practices on the performance of virtual IT service provisioning teams via the emergent states of trust and cohesiveness. To this aim, an input-process-output framework was adopted to develop a conceptual model and a survey with IT service provisioning professionals was conducted. The results suggest that a variety of work practices constitutes a barrier to the performance of virtual IT service provisioning teams; and that trust and cohesiveness are important mediators in this cause-effect relationship.
  • The evolution of studies on information technology and organizational agility: A bibliometric analysis
Henrique Takashi Adati Tomomitsu, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
    Gestao E Producao, 2021
Studies on information technology and organizational agility has shown significant growth since the beginning of 2014, which may be an indicator that this theme is beginning to mature in the concerned literature, and increasingly has become the subject of researchers. In view of the presented scenario, the objective of this study is to introduce a synthesis of the literature panorama of the relation between the focused two constructs in the last years. The author (s) chose to employ a bibliometric analysis to understand the evolution of studies on that relation. We concluded that in the United States there is a great concentration of research on this subject, and the most recent publications, in general, occurred in relevant management and information management system journals. The identified studies mainly concentrate on the causal relationship between information technology (IT) and organizational agility from three perspectives: (1) the direct effect of IT capabilities on agility, (2) the moderating effect of IT capabilities on the relationship between other organizational capabilities and organizational agility, and (3) the indirect effect of IT on organizational agility mediated by other organizational capabilities. In addition, it was possible to identify organizational agility connected with three aspects: sensitivity, decision and responsiveness. Another contribution of the study is the construction of a framework based on the main study samples and the most recurrent keywords. It is possible to detect the three levels of analysis in the relation between the two previously mentioned constructs, besides bringing out the definitions used for each construct. An opportunity for future studies is to evaluate the taxonomy identified for organizational agility.
  • Exploring the influence of social media information on interpersonal trust in new virtualwork partners
Hugo Martinelli Watanuki, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
    Informatics, 2019
This short communication proposes an exploratory investigation regarding the impact of social media information on interpersonal trust in new virtual work partners. The suggested approach assesses this potential impact via a combination of theories from informational economic studies and virtual team research. An initial theoretical model is also proposed.
  • The evolution of the relationship between project management and knowledge management: A bibliometric study
Henrique Takashi Adati Tomomitsu, Marly Monteiro de Carvalho, Renato de Oliveira Moraes
    Gestao E Producao, 2018
